September 2017 Oldland Parish Council’s Newsletter Covering the parish wards of Barrs Court, Cadbury Heath, Longwell Green, Orchard, Willsbridge and Wraxall NEWSLETTER NO. 48 ~ AUTUMN 2017 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the latest Oldland Parish Council Magazine! Firstly my thanks to Paul Hughes, the Parish Council Chair for the last year, for the sterling job he has done. Myself and Tony Olpin will be Chair and Vice Chair for the next year and look forward to a successful year with the Parish Council. As I am writing this the rain is lashing down so it’s a fairly typical British Summer! However that does remind us that soon the evenings will be getting darker (sorry!) and this is a good time to ensure you are ready for the winter with the challenges that brings. So make sure your car and house lights are all working as they should and as the nights draw in ensure that you are visible to other road users, plus don’t forget, that for over fifty fives, the Avon Fire & Rescue Service will check your property for safety and fit smoke alarms if needed (free of charge). This is a good time of year to ensure you are ready for the darker nights and colder days. At this time of year we are also reminded of the massive sacrifices made by our armed forces with the launch of the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. This will begin on the 27 October 2017 with an event at the Garden of Remembrance on Payne Green. All will be welcome and we look forward to seeing as many as possible. This will start the poppy collection in ASDA and many thanks to ASDA for hosting this and thanks to all the volunteer collectors. But don’t forget, more volunteers are always needed – contact Cllr G Downing if you would like to volunteer for an hour or so. I was delighted to be able to visit Barrs Court School recently. On a lovely day I was treated to an impressive display of team sports followed by a very pleasant discussion with the school captains, having been a governor at the School for a number of years in the past, it was great to see how well they are doing and to have the chance to chat to them. Recently, as many of you will be aware, we had a water failure (or outage as its now called) when the pumping station at Willsbridge had a catastrophic failure. This left much of our Parish with no water for most of the day and evening. However the majority of homes were reconnected by the early evening thanks to some fantastic work by Bristol Water (and the tree surgeons who were also needed to remove some trees in order to gain access).Bristol Water did a great job and Rob Ellis from Bristol Water has suggested elderly or vulnerable customers may want to register so that in the future they can be responded to more quickly. The number to call is 0345 6003600. This would seem to be a good idea so I encourage you to call and register particularly if you have elderly relatives or are a carer for a vulnerable person. There have been recent meetings of the Community Engagement Forums (formerly known as the Safer & Stronger Groups). This is a great way to engage with councillors (both District and Parish), Fire and Police representative and other members of the public. The CEF is open to all and is a great way to know what is going on and to bring issues to the people who can solve them. They are held four times a year and try to move around the area although it can be difficult to find venues. Details of future meetings are elsewhere in this newsletter. Finally, we are very honoured to have received an offer from Mr & Mrs Sims to fund a memorial bench in memory of their late son Dr Mark Sims. This is a fantastic gesture and one that we are delighted to accept. The bench is in Payne Green and should provide a welcome resting place for parishioners. Kind Regards Ron Hardie The Parish Clerk is Victoria Hicks (28 Brunel Close, Bridgeyate, Bristol, BS30 5BB) and can be contacted at all reasonable times: Telephone: 0117 961 5021 Email [email protected] The Parish Council website is oldlandparishcouncil.co.uk IF YOU WOULD LIKE AN E-MAIL COPY OR LARGE PRINT VERSION OF THIS NEWSLETTER,CONTACT THE CLERK. This newsletter is designed and printed by Rainbow Press [email protected] HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR PARISH? Please identify exactly where this spot is to win a £10 cash prize. Please send your name, contact telephone number and postcode along with your guess to the Clerk by 1 October 2017. The winning entry will be drawn from the correct entries received by the closing date. Answer to the last competition: Hinton Green BMX Park. • Free Swimming Pilot for Pregnant Women Launched
PRESS RELEASE January 2020 Free swimming pilot for pregnant women launched From 1 February, pregnant women living in South Gloucestershire will be able access free swimming as part of a year‐long pilot scheme from the region’s Active Lifestyle Centres. The scheme is being run as a joint partnership between Circadian Trust, the not‐for‐profit organisation operating the Active Lifestyle Centres, and South Gloucestershire Council. The pilot will run for a year, which will be monitored and reviewed, and the findings used to inform any future decision. Swimming is a highly beneficial way to stay active during pregnancy and can be performed safely in all three trimesters. Widely recognised as a low‐impact method of aerobic exercise, swimming provides a more comfortable environment for expectant mothers to maintain their physical health – as the water both keeps them cool and supports the additional weight. In addition, researchers are now discovering that regular aerobic exercise during pregnancy has the potential to improve the mental and physical health of children well into adulthood. To be eligible for the scheme, women will need to present their Maternity Exemption Certificate, supplied by their doctor or midwife, and will also need to show proof of address before their first session. Mark Crutchley, Chief Executive at Circadian Trust, said: “As an organisation with health and wellbeing at its core, we’re committed to making exercise accessible to all. Therefore, it’s an absolute pleasure to be helping women to swim throughout their pregnancies for free. “There are a vast number of benefits to exercising during pregnancy, from maintaining a healthy weight to reducing health‐related complications for the mother and baby – and these benefits can have long‐term effect on a child’s development beyond birth.

Officers executed a warrant at the property in Staple Hill to help protect a vulnerable cuckooing. property in January and found large amounts of class A man from ‘cuckooing’. Residents have made multiple reports of offences drugs and weapons, including machetes. The man, who lives in a property in the Phoenix Grove including drug-dealing and misuse, anti-social behaviour Paul Crouch, Anti-Social Behaviour Officer at Avon & area, was at risk from dealers who wanted to exploit his and cuckooing to Sovereign Housing Association over the Somerset Police, said: “We’ve been working with the housing association and South Gloucestershire Council to safeguard the victim and prevent further offences from taking place. “We took the unusual step of applying for a partial closure order, which was granted at Bristol Magistrates’ Court, which allows the victim to stay at the property but means no one else is permitted to be inside the premises, apart from council and housing association staff and emergency services personnel. “Drug dealers use cuckooing as a method of exploiting vulnerable people. They effectively take over their home and use it as a base to supply class A drugs from. “It’s a destructive practice which has a corrosive influence on our local communities and we’ll do everything we can to prevent it from happening.

COUNCIL SIZE SUBMISSION South Gloucestershire South Gloucestershire Council Conservative Group. February 2017 Overview of South Gloucestershire 1. South Gloucestershire is an affluent unitary authority on the North and East fringe of Bristol. South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) was formed in 1996 following the dissolution of Avon County Council and the merger of Northavon District and Kingswood Borough Councils. 2. South Gloucestershire has around 274,700 residents, 62% of which live in the immediate urban fringes of Bristol in areas including Kingswood, Filton, Staple Hill, Downend, Warmley and Bradley Stoke. 18% live in the market towns of Thornbury, Yate, and Chipping Sodbury. The remaining 20% live in rural Gloucestershire villages such as Marshfield, Pucklechurch, Hawkesbury Upton, Oldbury‐ on‐Severn, Alveston, and Charfield. 3. South Gloucestershire has lower than average unemployment (3.3% against an England average of 4.8% as of 2016), earns above average wages (average weekly full time wage of £574.20 against England average of £544.70), and has above average house prices (£235,000 against England average of £218,000)1. Deprivation 4. Despite high employment and economic outputs, there are pockets of deprivation in South Gloucestershire. Some communities suffer from low income, unemployment, social isolation, poor housing, low educational achievement, degraded environment, access to health services, or higher levels of crime than other neighbourhoods. These forms of deprivation are often linked and the relationship between them is so strong that we have identified 5 Priority Neighbourhoods which are categorised by the national Indices of Deprivation as amongst the 20% most deprived neighbourhoods in England and Wales. These are Cadbury Heath, Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill, and west and south Yate/Dodington.

  • Covid Weekly Testing Unit Hawkesbury Village Hall
Twice Weekly Covid-19 Testing Kits Will Be Available Through Mobile Facility in Communities Across South Gloucestershire We are introducing a mobile option that will take rapid (lateral flow) asymptomatic testing kits to communities across South Gloucestershire, as part of our support for all residents over the age of 16 without symptoms, who are now being encouraged to take twice weekly tests. A specially equipped vehicle will visit up to 14 locations across the district each week, giving people the option of collecting testing kits to complete at home, as well as the opportunity to take a test with guidance from trained staff if you are unfamiliar with the process. This programme will begin on Saturday 15 May, with visits to Kingswood and Thornbury High Streets. Testing is a central pillar, alongside the continued roll-out of the vaccine, and effective local contact tracing including supporting those who need to self-isolate, that will mean we can live safely with Covid-19 over the coming months. Together these steps, combined with individuals following the guidance on social distancing, hand hygiene, face coverings and fresh air, will help us along the road map out of restrictions and enable us to live safely with the coronavirus into the future. The Government is encouraging all residents over the age of 16, who do not have Covid-19 symptoms, to make regular, twice weekly testing, using rapid home test kits, part of their routine as we enjoy the increased opportunities to get out and mix safely with more people. The mobile offer will visit sites across the district regularly, including rural areas such as Hawkesbury, Marshfield, Severn Beach and Pucklechurch, as well as communities in Thornbury, Charfield, Cadbury Heath, Emersons Green and Patchway.
