DELIGHTFULLY AUDACIOUS ’80S WRESTLING SHOW. By Kelly Connolly @_KELLYQ ESPITE WHAT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD, women don’t GLOW without a little sweat. Net- flix’s buzzy new comedy—inspired by the real-life Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a televised female-wrestling showcase that ran in the late ’80s—is a bruiser encased in spandex and hair- spray. In one corner: Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an aspiring actress who claws her way into a wrestling pilot despite knowing nothing about the sport. In the other: the friend she betrayed, Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap opera queen who’s spurred to take control of her life—and deliver a few smackdowns—after Ruth has an affair with her husband. Debbie takes on the role of all-American hero opposite Ruth’s communist Cold War heel, and their best-friend breakup bleeds into the ring. “Halfway through shooting,” Brie recalls, “I realized and said to Betty, ‘You know, we are the will-they-or-won’t-they of the show.’” In that dynamic, Ruth is difficult to root for but impossible to root against, and costar Marc Maron, who plays the director whose quest to film the pilot serves as the season’s backbone, credits Brie with pulling off such a contradictory role. “That weird balance of desperation and persistence and charm—earnest charm—it’s a tough character to put together,” he says. At a nearly empty restaurant in Brooklyn, a waiter nervously approaches the petite woman with long, wheaty-blond hair. “Miss Hunter, as soon as I heard you speak,” he tells her with ashakeinhisdelivery,“I knewit was you.” He’s not alone. Holly Hunter’s voice—that dazzling, invigorating Georgia twang—could have limited her 37-year career, but she tricked that assumed weakness into an invin- cible strength. Her first big break came in 1982 when she replaced Mary Beth Hurt in Crimes of the Heart, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Beth Henley. “I kinda had a backdoor Broadway debut,” she says. “I was able to sneak in and learn on the job in a way that was a little less noticed.” Two audience members did noticeher, however:upstart filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, who would cast Hunter in Raising Arizona five years later. Physically diminutive but possessing a towering intensity, she’s been a beacon for a generation of audi- ences (plus actors and directors) who are forti- fied by her power, in work as singular as Broadcast News and The Piano. “People achieve their dreams in unorthodox ways, man,” she says. “I’m one of those people.” She’s still achieving. Hunter has earned raves for her (what else?) tough-as-nails perfor- mance in the acclaimed comedy The Big Sick (out now), and she also toplines the indie drama Strange Weather (July 28). At 59, Hunter’s still in peak form—as she proved dur- ing our look back at her extraordinary career. Joel Coen and McDormand married in 1984. “Fran was a great roommate,” Hunter says, smiling at the memory. “We were both smoking back then, and it was a pleasure to wake up, hang out at the kitchen table, and drink coffee and smoke cigarettes together. And then sometimes we would smoke and drink coffee until it was time to smoke and drink wine. Those were magical days.” Hunter and McDormand in 2000

RAISINGARIZONA 1987 Hunter had appeared in just a few TV movies when the Coens cast her in Raising Arizona. The baby-crazy police officer named Ed was a role they’d written for her. “I was not an entity at all. I had no profile,” she says. “We were all living in a house in L.A. together, and they gave me this script. I could hear my voice in it, and I could almost see the movie. Then they cast Nic Cage, who I’d seen in Valley Girl and I totally adored.” ( From top )

We’ve all seen movies in 3-D, but director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Lucy) raises the bar on the whole extra-dimensions craze in his new sci-fi spectacle. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (out July 21) is set in the year 2740 and centers on space cops Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) as they solve a mystery involving the extinction of a peaceful humanoid alien race called the Pearls. But what triggers the story is a Besson special: one wild, twisty, visionary 18-minute action sequence that takes place in two parallel dimensions at once. BREAK ON THROUGH “I had this idea 15 years ago, during conversations This shot with crazy friends,” Besson says. “Then the next question reveals the is, ‘How can we have fun?’ ” He imagined a place called parallel dimen- sion hidden the Big Market, which looks like a desert until Valerian in the desert. plugs into a machine and puts on tinted glasses that Valerian’s reveal a vast supermall with thousands of shops stretch- opening action scene, an ing into the sky and 500 floors below the surface. 18-minute A chase ensues between the minions of a three-nosed chase, occurs in both Jabba-type beast named Igon Siruss (voiced by John dimensions Goodman) and Valerian, who has inadvertently trapped at once. his arm between dimensions. If this sounds complicated, Besson understands that. “After I wrote the sequence, I explained it to the crew for an hour,” he says. “They were smiling, but I could see on their faces that they didn’t understand a thing.” And so at his L’École de la Cité in Paris, a free film academy the director opened in 2012, Besson recruited the whole student body to shoot a demo of the action scene’s 600 storyboarded shots as part of their curriculum. “They did everything in three weeks, and then we edited,” Besson says. “And then the crew understood the scene.” Thus concluding Multidimensional Action 101.

THE CIVIL WAR IN SYRIA HAS NOW BEEN blazing for six years. Nearly half a million people have been killed. Roughly 11 million have been displaced. The end is nowhere in sight. The only hope at this point is to get the word out to the rest of the world so that they will be guilted into action. Matthew Heineman’s urgent and timely new docu- mentary, City of Ghosts, attempts to do just that, thankfully without resorting to the kind of didacticism that can undermine advocacy films like this one. A 14TH-CENTURY CONVENT isn’t the most expected setting for a raunchy sex comedy, but with The Little Hours, writer-director Jeff Baena adapts parts of Boccaccio’s Decameron into an absurd and hysterical tale of nuns gone wild. After getting caught in bed with his master’s wife, servant Massetto (Dave Franco) hides out by posing as a deaf-mute gardener at the local convent (run by John C. TITLE Something to Tell You

LABEL Columbia | GENRE Rock

REVIEW BY Jonathan Bernstein @jonbern

WHEN HAIM ARRIVED IN 2013 with Days Are Gone, a stylish yet accessible blend of electronic beats and classic rock shredding, the trio of sisters released one of that year’s most con- fident debut albums. It’s taken them four years to craft a follow-up—an eternity in today’s churn-and-burn culture. But after touring the world and opening up for Rihanna and Taylor Swift (and joining one very famous squad), Alana, Danielle, and Este return with the impeccable Something to Tell You (out July 7). Here, Haim deliver 11 songs of expert songwriting and fine-tuned studio trickery that sharpen their jukebox classicism; percussion-based, harmony- heavy West Coast pop-rock is once again the dominant theme. But compared with their debut, Something is less cluttered with ideas and more deliberate about its influences: The R&B strut of “Walking Away” and “Ready for You” nods toward ’90s girl groups, while melodic, richly produced gems like “Noth- ing’s Wrong” and “Found It in Silence” are adorned in ’70s AM gold. It’s not all SoCal sunshine, though: On “Night So Long,” Danielle displays her roots as a singer- songwriter with bare-bones emotion—it’s the most gripping tune on an album that explores the contours of heartbreak, desire, and abandonment. But mostly Haim zero in on what they do best, and the result is a simple and staggering ode to the joy and craftsmanship of American pop. A– Podcasts EDITED BY CRISTINA EVERETT @cristinaeverett
