ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)

Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathi Temple, the most famous Temple of Northern , is a well known cultural and spiritual center in District. Bhagavathi is worshipped in two forms - as Mootha Bhagavathi (Durga) and Elaya Bhagavathi (Saraswathi). Besides these two Goddesses, Vishnumoorthi, Ghantakarnan and Dhandan Devan are the other deities. People belonging to different religions irrespective of their caste, creed and belief visit the Temple to offer their prayers to the deities. The festivals of the Temple are being celebrated by the active participation of the entire society. There is no bar on people of any caste or race from visiting the Temple. The Temple is very famous for some of the rarest traditional customary rituals and ceremonies.

Thengayeru The Maruputhari festival is celebrated in the Maruputhari Ezhunellathu month of Dhanu for two days at the Palakkunnu Vedikettu Bhagavathy Temple. Feast prepared out of newly Feast harvested rice is served to the devotees. Thengayeru, Ezhunellathu and Vedikettu are significant events of the festival. A variety of entertainment programs like drama, music, mimicry etc. are also held as part of the festival.
