Commencement Exercises

Medford, Massachusetts May 31, 1970 I'M GOING TO SAY IT NOW Phil Ochs Oh I am just a student sir, and J only want to learn. But it's hard to read through the ri sin g smoke from the books that you'd like to burn. So I'd like to make a promise and like to make a vow, That when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. Oh you've given me a number and you've taken off my name. To get around this campus, why, you almost need a plane. And you're supporting Chiang Kai Shek while I'm supporting Mao, So when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. I wish that you'd make up your mind, I wish that you'd decide That I should live as freely as those who live outside. 'Cause we also are entitled to the rights to be endowed. And when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. Oh you'd like to be my father, you'd like to be my Dad, And give me ki sses when I'm good and spank me when I'm bad. But since I've left my parents I've forgotten how to bow. So when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. And things, they might be different if I was here alone, But I've got a friend or two who no longer live at home. And we'll respect our elders just as long as they allow That when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. I've read of other countries where the students take a stand. They've even helped to overthrow the leaders of the land. Now I wouldn't go so far to say we're also learning how, But when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now. So keep right on a-talking and tell us what to do. But if nobody li stens, my apologies to you. And I know th at you were younger once, 'cause you sure are older now. And when I've got something to say sir, I'm going to say it now.

AMERICA Simon & Garfunkel

"Let us be lovers, Was a spy. We'll marry our fortunes together. 1 said "Be careful, I've got some real estate His bow tie is really a camera." Here in my bag." "Toss me a cigarette, So we bought a pack of cigarettes, I think there's one in my raincoat." And Mrs. Wagner's pies, "We smoked the last one And walked off An hour ago." To look for America. So I looked at the scenery, "Kathy", I said, She read her magazine; And the rose over an open field . As we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh, "Kathy, I'm lost," I said, "Michiga n seems like a dream to Though I knew she was sleeping. me now. "I'm empty and aching and It took me four days I don't know why." To hitchhike from Saginaw. Counting the cars I've come to look for America." On the New Jersey Turnpike. They've all come Laughing on the bus, To look for America, Playing games with the faces, All come to look for America, She said the man in the gabardine suit All come to look for America. I swear by Apollo the physician, and Esculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation-to reckon him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation; and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others. I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further, from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves. Whatever, in connection with my professional practice, or not in connection with it, I see or hear, on the life men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times! But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot! The Declaration of Geneva

At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:

I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;

I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due;

I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;

The health of my patient will be my first consideration;

I will respect the secrets which are confided in me;

I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honor and the noble traditions of the medical profession;

My colleagues will be my brothers;

I will not permit considerations of religion, nationality, race, party politics or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient;

I will maintain the utmost respect for human life from the time of conception; even under threat, I will not use my medical knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity;

I make these promises solemnly, freely, and upon my honor. TUFTS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
