Lineage- Speciation through-time plots suggest a gradual and constant rate of diversification, beginning in the Oligocene and extending through the late Miocene and early Pliocene with a slight burst in the Pleistocene. -

This unique species is distinguished from all the other congeners from a combination of characters; snout rounded in lateral aspect, bluntly pointed in dorsal and ventral aspect, canthus rostralis rounded, vomerine teeth, lingual papilla and nuptial pads absent, dermal fringe distinct on inside of fingers III and IV, small blunt tubercles on metacarpal and ulnar folds, toes basally webbed, interorbital area smooth, upper eyelid prominent tubercles present, anterior and posterior dorsum without horny spinules but tubercles present, upper part of flank weakly granular, supratympanic fold distinct, prominent small calcar present at the distal end of the tibia, throat granular, chest and belly coarsely granular. -

Tropical forests are considered one of the most important biogeographic zones for amphibian species diversity. As a tropical country in Asia, Bangladesh implements different types of forest management practices in its forests, which might affect prevailing forest quality in the existing forest types. The current state of information on the impact of habitat alteration on amphibian species assemblages in Bangladesh is inadequate. To evaluate this, we conducted a study in Khadimnagar National Park (KNP) in north-eastern Bangladesh. We used a combination of several common amphibian study techniques in 15 pre-marked transects covering three major habitat types in KNP: forest edge, forest interior and swamp area. Twelve anuran species belonging to eleven genera and six families were recorded during the study period. Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis was the most abundant species, representing 51.7% of the recorded individuals, followed by Fejervarya spp. (18.9%); the remaining 10 species altogether recorded less than 30% of the total abundance. Duttaphrynus melanostictus, Kaloula pulchra and Raorchestes parvulus in particular occurred with very low abundance. -

Paddy fields are habitats commonly used for reproduction by many species of amphibians. We examined the effects of butachlor on Bufotes viridis development. Amplectant pairs of B. viridis were kept in the laboratory in an aquarium overnight, and their spawn collected the next morning. Eggs were exposed to butachlor at different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.8, 1, 2, 3.5, 7, 14µg/l), all lower than the concentration used in the area (rice paddy fields) by farmers. Eggs were allowed to develop to Gosner stage 24 and their developmental patterns compared with those reared in normal conditions (control). In order to examine whether jelly coats have a significant role in the protection of developing eggs from the toxin, another group of eggs were de-jellied and treated in the same procedure. The LC50 value of butachlor was calculated as 14μg/l and 7μg/l after 96h for jellied eggs and de-jellied eggs respectively. Butachlor lead to a range of external and internal body malformations. Butachlor concentrations of 2µg/l, 7µg/l and 14µg/l reduced embryonic growth and development. A high mortality rate and both internal and external abnormalities were observed at lower concentrations than used in fields, suggesting that butachlor can have significant negative effects on amphibians where this herbicide is used. -

Vredenburg, Co-Chair Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungal pathogen that causes chytridiomycosis in amphibians, has infected >500 species and caused declines and extinctions in >200 species. Recently, a second deadly fungal pathogen that also causes chytridiomycosis, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) was discovered. The presence of these lethal pathogens in international trade threatens amphibian diversity. In this dissertation, I use a novel modeling approach to predict disease risk from Bd and/or Bsal to amphibian populations in North America and Asia by incorporating pathogen habitat suitability, host availability, the potential presence of an invasive carrier species, and pathogen invasion history. First I identify Bsal threat to North American salamanders to be greatest in the Southeast US, the West Coast, and highlands of Mexico. I then ii investigate the compounded risk of Bd and Bsal in North America and find highest relative risk in those same areas and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the northern Rocky Mountains. -

The species differs from its congeners based on a combination of characters including small to medium-sized adult males, snout mucronate in dorsal view, canthus rostralis angular and sharp, snout slightly projecting beyond mouth ventrally, tympanum indistinct and one third of the eye diameter, tongue without papilla but with a lingual pit, nuptial pad rudimentary to absent, a bony tubercle on humerus at the end of deltoid ridge present in males and absent in females, skin finely granulated or smooth dorsally, lateral side marbled with white blotches on brown to black background. Molecular phylogeny based on 16S rRNA gene sequence suggests that the new species is genetically distinct and forms a monophyletic clade within Raorchestes. -

During a larger study on canopy fauna in the northeastern region of Bangladesh, fve specimens of a small bush frog were collected from Satchari National Park in June and July 2017. This species was confrmed as Raorchestes longchuanensis using both morphometric and genetic analyses. Although this species was originally described from Yunnan, China, the authors speculated that it may be found in neighboring countries adjacent to the original records, including northern Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. However, the current fnding suggests that the species could be more widespread and resilient, spanning westwards through to northeastern India and Bangladesh. Data are also provided on coloration, habitat, natural history, and vocalizations of this little-known species. Although the species is designated Least Concern according to IUCN, more comprehensive studies should be undertaken to better understand its biology and population status to aid in a more comprehensive global conservation assessment. A short fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was employed to assess phylogenetic relationships across Philautus sanctisilvaticus Das and Chanda, 1997, Raorchestes terebrans (Das and Chanda, 1998) and Philautus similipalensis Dutta, 2003. All sequenced specimens, including material from near the type localities of P. sanctisilvaticus (Amarkantak) and P. similipalensis (Simlipal) were genetically extremely similar, with pairwise uncorrected distances <1% in the 16S gene, and were phylogenetically placed within the genus Raorchestes. -
