Aloha Festivals 2008 “Hula, The Art of Hawaiian Dance”

Get out your ti-leaf skirts and flower lei. The theme of this year’s Aloha Festivals is “Hula, The Art of Hawaiian Dance,” celebrating hula and presenting Hawai‘i’s history and culture through this unique art form.

This year, as part of an effort to sharpen the focus of this annual celebration, Aloha Festivals will take place for one weekend only on O‘ahu.

About Hula

“Hula is the great art of Hawai‘i – alive and loved in the Islands and celebrated and studied around the world. It is a dance that is innately Hawaiian and devoted to expressing the essence of the Islands, capturing in movement everything from the delicate beauty of an ‘ōhi‘a blossom to the unstoppable power of Pele.” – Julia Steele, editor at large, Hana Hou!

Hula has always been a focal point in Hawaiian culture and is precious in the way it is presented. Hula tells a story, from the mele (song) chosen, to the facial expressions, hand motions, foot and hip movements. Learn to express your love for someone or depict the misty rain along the Ko‘olau Mountains. Costumes and lei also illustrate the color or flower of an sland or era of the particular dance. All these components come together to portray the meaning behind the mele, which everyone will experience at Aloha Festivals events. 2008 Royal Court (Members from left to right: Prince - Justy Keikiliiliionalani Kalilimoku, King - Wyatt Kamalu- lani Kahapea, Queen - Tracy Lokelani Keliihoomalu, continued Princess - Elise Ululani Kahikina)

Aqua Hotels & Resorts is Hawai‘i’s first ‘employee-owned’ hotel company

Owners Mike and Aida Paulin give employees a ‘piece of the rock’

Mike Paulin, Owner & CEO of Aqua Hotels & Resorts, a full-service hotel management company, executed the final details of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan that converts Aqua into Hawaii’s first ‘employee-owned’ hotel company. This significant achievement makes it possible for Aqua’s 500 employees to become ‘co-owners’ of the growing Waikīkī-based hotel company.

Aqua’s new and unique hotel ownership status is unprecedented in the Islands. Aqua believes hospitality is a highly personal business and this model further motivates employees, who are the cornerstone of the company’s success, by giving them a ‘piece of the rock’ for their diligent work and loyalty.

According to Paulin, “Aida (Mrs. Paulin) and I are sharing 30% of the company with our employees. Each member of the Aqua ohana is eligible to become a co-owner of Aqua after a fixed vesting period.” The value of the initial percentage share of the company is just over $8 million. At a later time, the Paulin’s plan to allocate more ownership of Aqua to their employees.

Paulin believes that the company’s product is its employees and its structure is the service it provides. “I have no doubt that Aqua’s ESOP will attract the best people in the industry to our organization contributing further to our highly regarded service,” added Paulin. “Our ESOP comes at a time when Aqua’s excellent customer satisfaction ratings are leading Waikiki hotels.”

Currently, three Aqua hotels rank in the top 10 of the consumer-driven TripAdvisor ratings and Aqua Waikiki Wave was awarded “Hawaii Region #1 “Best Hotel Values for 2008” by Budget Travel magazine.

While still a fairly ‘new’ company, Aqua’s employees have worked very hard to provide excellent service to their guests and create a highly respected Hawaii hotel brand. “Employee ownership is our way of thanking our ohana for making Aqua the Waikīkī leader in guest service and we’re thrilled to make Aqua the first employee-owned hotel company in Hawaii,” added Paulin. “Employee briefings to explain the benefit and qualification process are scheduled. There is no cost to the employee for their participation in this benefit.”

Since January 2008, Aqua has added three hotels to its growing portfolio – Park Shore Waikiki, Aqua Waikiki Beachside and Aqua Prince, increasing its Waikīkī presence to 13 unique properties and adding new employees who will also become eligible to share in the success of the organization.

Hawai‘i Veteran To Return As Area Vice President of Hawai‘i and Managing Director of Hilton Hawaiian Village® Beach Resort & Spa

Jerry Gibson takes helm of Hilton’s Hawaii resorts

Hilton Hotels Corporation announced today that long-time Hawai‘i hotel executive Jerry Gibson has been named area vice president of Hawai‘i and managing director of Hilton Hawaiian Village® Beach Resort & Spa. Gibson will have operational responsibility for all of Hilton’s owned and managed properties in the Hawaiian Islands, including two of Hilton’s largest campuses, Hilton Hawaiian Village and Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Gibson brings nearly three decades of experience working with four and five-star Hyatt resorts and hotels across the United States and most recently served as vice president and managing director of the 2,019-room Hyatt Regency and assisted in the management of 25 hotels in the central region.

Gibson spent more than 18 years in executive positions in Hawai‘i, including general manager, Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa (1999 to 2004); Hawai‘i regional food and beverage director, Hyatt Resorts Hawaii (1992 to 1995); director of food and beverage, Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa (1991 to 1992); food and beverage director, Hyatt Regency Waikoloa (1990 to 1991). He also was assistant food and beverage director at Hyatt Regency Waikiki and assistant banquet manager at Hyatt Regency Maui in 1980.

Gibson started his career with Host Marriott following graduation from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in business administration. After he became one of the youngest general managers in the company, he joined the Hyatt Corporation where he remained for the next 27 years. Coming up from the ranks of food and beverage, Gibson spent 13 years as general manager at resorts throughout Ohio, , Hawai‘i, Nevada, and New York. While in Hawaii, he played a major role in the launch of a 1,240-room resort, which is known today as the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

It was his efforts at Hyatt Regency Kauai to maintain steady occupancy and revenue in the aftermath of September 11 that earned him the 2002 Donald Pritzker Award for Hyatt General Manager of the Year worldwide.

A very active member of the Hawai‘i community, he was on the board of directors of the Hawai‘i Hotel Association, also serving as president of its Kaua‘i chapter. He was a member of the founding board of directors for the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative and was instrumental in the development and eventual funding of the KIUC. He was also a director for the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau and was president of the Po‘ipū Beach Resort Association.

"Hawai‘iis a strategic market for Hilton and we believe we have found the perfect leader for our Hawaiian resorts in Jerry Gibson" said Ian Carter, president global operations, Hilton Hotels Corporation. "Jerry has spent the majority of his hospitality career in the islands and understands the critical needs of the business there as well as the uniqueness of Hawaii and its people.”

Gibson replaces Gerhard (Gary) Seibert who retired earlier this year after an exceptional 35-year career with Hilton.

Aqua Bamboo & Spa Completes $2.5 Million in Upgrades and offers a “Bamboo Renewal” introductory special

Aqua Hotels & Resorts announced the 94-room Aqua Bamboo & Spa has completed a $2.5 million renovation upgrade of its guest rooms and public areas. All work was accomplished with a minimum of guest discomfort.

“To celebrate the grand renewal of this very popular Waikiki boutique hotel, Aqua is offering a special rate to introduce this lovely resort to consumers” said Elizabeth Churchill, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Aqua.

‘Bamboo Renewal’ introductory special Aqua’s ‘Bamboo Renewal” introductory rate starts at $110 per night, single or double occupancy. It is offered on a space available basis until December 21, 2008 and there is no minimum room night requirement. As an added value, guests booking the special also receive a $25 AquaSPA coupon per stay at the hotel.

“While some guests may be new to having spa treatments, I highly recommend they use the coupon and take full advantage of at least one AquaSPA massage therapy during their visit. Our experienced therapists are sure to convert them into future spa fans,” added Churchill.

Refurbishments and upgrades at the Aqua Bamboo & Spa are immediately noticeable as they start at the porte cochere where a beautiful and subtle cascading water feature greets arriving guests and sets the tone for their stay at this stylish hideaway.

Inner Sanctuary—Guests familiar with Aqua Bamboo & Spa will appreciate how the Asian-inspired lobby has been tastefully reappointed with new furnishings and reconfigured to allow for a much more open feel. As you would expect from its ‘inner sanctuary’ reference, the ambience remains casually elegant and inviting. The inner sanctuary is also the location of the complimentary 24-hour coffee and tea service. The popular surfboard rack is also available for guest use.

Outer Sanctuary—Although just a short 1.5 blocks to Waikīkī Beach, guests love the hotel’s sunny and lush outer sanctuary. The salt-water swimming pool has been upgraded with new tile and the addition of teak furniture. Earlier this year, the beautiful black-rock waterfall at the pool’s edge was completed and a thatched-roof cabana was added. The outer sanctuary is also where daily complimentary Continental breakfast is served and for guests starting their Oahu excursions early, ”Breakfast 2 Go", can be arranged. It is in this peaceful and relaxing outdoor setting where guests will also find the AquaSPA, sauna, jet spa and barbeque grill.

Guest rooms and suites—The majority of the renovation expenditures were assigned to upgrading the guest rooms and suites at Aqua Bamboo & Spa. Each unit has been completely painted and refurbished to include a new bathroom – vanity, mirror, sink, fixtures, etc. and kitchen appliances – ceramic cook top, microwave, under counter refrigerator, etc. All units have new AquaBLISS beds with pillow-top mattresses, linens, draperies, tile and case goods.

All new lightening fixtures, dressers, nightstands, small dining tables and chairs have also been installed and rooms feature 32” LCD televisions.

Guests booking the Aqua Bamboo & Spa have a wide selection of room categories to choose from including several elegantly appointed suites and a penthouse – which are favorite choices for families or couples looking for the spaciousness and conveniences of a home environment.

Aqua Bamboo & Spa is located at 2425 Kuhio Avenue in the heart of Waikīkī.

The ‘Bamboo Renewal’ special cannot be combined with any other offer. For reservations, see your preferred travel agent or call Aqua toll free at 1-866-406-2782.

6th Annual Hapa Haole Hula & Music Festival Swings Into Waikīkī Saturday, September 13, Noon, Kapi olani Park Bandstand

Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine & PA I Foundation Present a Celebration of Waikīkī’s Romantic and ‘Wicky-Wacky’ Era of Hula & Music

Wakīkī will come alive with the strains of Hapa Haole music when Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine & PA I Foundation present the 6th Annual Hapa Haole Hula & Music Festival, Saturday, September 13 at the Kapi olani Park Bandstand. This free event starts at Noon, immediately following the completion of the Aloha Week Parade. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy the afternoon of hula and music along with food and craft booths.

Award-winning hālau and musicians will showcase the hula and music of this fun era in Hawaiian history. Hapa Haole songs have Hawaiian themes, but are composed in the English language. The music of this period was composed by native Hawaiians who were prohibited to speak their native language, visitors and residents of Hawai i moved to write about its beauty and their experiences, and by those who had not even visited Hawai i but had a romantic view of the islands. Many beautiful and fun songs—which have become hula classics— and some very "tacky" songs as well, came out of this era.

The music of this genre is sometimes under-appreciated. "Young people don't know the music — or know very little about it," says Takamine, "I think because of the Hawaiian renaissance, the movement to uphold kahiko, hapa haole has been neglected. My kumu hula, the late Auntie Maiki Aiu Lake, always said to support and know everything."

Photo by James Miura The celebration of Hapa Haole hula and music continues with the 6th Annual Hapa Haole Hula & Vocal Soloist Competition Friday, October 10, at the Hale Koa Hotel Lū au Garden.
