    Shaping Lives with Stories

MEDIA RELEASE August 2012 Shaping Lives With Stories The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) will launch Indigenous Literacy Day at Wesley College’s Glen Waverley campus, Wednesday 5 September. Students from Years 5-9 will learn about the ILF’s work in raising literacy levels and improving the lives and opportunities of Indigenous children living in remote and isolated regions. Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO (known as “Aunty Joy”), a prominent Indigenous Australian, who has been actively involved in Aboriginal issues for more than 30 years, will welcome the students and talk about how stories have shaped her life. Special guests and the Foundation’s ambassadors Kaz Cooke and Felix Riebl, who have traveled out to remote communities with the Foundation, will also speak to the students about their stories and the opportunities that they have had in their careers. Kaz Cooke is a former news journalist, but is best-known as an author whose books have entertained two generations of Australian women. Felix Riebl is an Australian singer- songwriter and percussionist, who has achieved success as one of the lead vocalists from The Cat Empire. Wesley College is one of the Foundation’s key school supports and the college’s student advocacy group, Wesmob, will make a special presentation on the day. Wesmob work to raise awareness about Indigenous issues, rights and welfare. The donated money will go towards the purchase and supply of culturally appropriate books and literacy resources for over 200 remote communities around Australia. Only one in five children living in a remote Indigenous community can read or write to the accepted minimum level.

    Electric Guitar Chris Hale

Julien Wilson’s STOCK Julien Wilson - tenor sax Craig Fermanis - electric guitar Chris Hale - bass guitar Hugh Harvey - drums "Wilson's importance in the pantheon of Australian music continues to grow. This is not just due to his stature as an improvising saxophonist or a composer (although either would be reason enough). It's partly due to his keen sense of being heir to such Australian pioneers as Mark Simmonds, Bernie McGann and Allan Browne. It is also due to his Browne-like idiomatic openness, so the playground is the whole gamut of jazz, from its earliest New Orleans roots to the golden tenor saxophone era of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster; from bebop to free jazz and jazz inflected with rock, funk and diverse music from around the globe." “the most potent tenor to be heard in Australia these days… stupendous power, his sound so massive it seemed to threaten the structural integrity of the saxophone’s bell” Sydney Morning Herald “He can create an air of majesty with a bold upward sweep on his tenor, or sustain a single, barely- perceptible note with the focus of a Zen monk.” The Age Wilson is recognised as one of the pre-eminent saxophonists of his generation. Bursting on to the national stage at 22 Julien won the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 1994. Working with bands including SNAG, Festa & Ishish he quickly built a reputation as a player who can juxtapose wistfully melodic and stridently fiery statements in the same breath. At the end of the 90s he moved to the US to study with George Russell and Paul Bley.

ARTIST PROFILE MC Trey: The ‘Feline Force’ of Australian Hip Hop Tony Mitchell A Hip Hop Role Model Fijian-Australian MC Trey, aka Thelma Thomas, is arguably Australia’s leading female MC, who has begun to receive prominent mainstream media coverage for her Pacific Islander style, dynamic live performances, distinctively street-wise and musically diverse recordings, and her hip hop workshops. Described by Andrew Drever in the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘one of Australian hip hop’s true role models,’1 to date she has released two acclaimed mini-albums, the ten-track Daily Affirmations (2000)—described as a ‘landmark for the Australian hip hop scene’ and album of the week in Sydney street mag Revolver2—and the eight-track Tapastry Tunes (2003), described by George Palathingal in the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Metro’ as ‘[d]emonstrating potentially the biggest leap forward for Australian hip hop.’3 Trey (initially an anagram for ‘The Rhymin’ Edifying Young’un’) has also contributed tracks to numerous Australian hip hop compilations, most notably the all-woman First Words (2000), released on Sydney-based label Mother Tongues, described by label founder Heidi Pasqual as ‘the first label in the world dedicated to the development of Women in Hip Hop Music.’ On the US release Best of International Hip Hop (Hip-O Universal, 2000) she represents Australia with her ‘melodic, realistic, personal, political, positive’ MC style, alongside a host of non-Anglophone male MCs and crews from Argentina, Algeria, Switzerland, Israel, Romania, Greece, Austria, Greenland, Croatia, France, South Africa and Portugal. Trey’s track on the international hip hop compilation, ‘Feline Forces,’ is about the African- American and Australian women in hip hop who have influenced her, from Roxanne Shante to MC Lyte, Baby Love, MC Que and local graffiti artist and MC Charlene aka Spice, who ‘in ’88 dropped the first Aussie female tune’ (on the Virgin compilation of Australian hip hop 1 Andrew Drever, ‘Trey bien,’ Sydney Morning Herald 27 June 2003: ‘Metro’ 10.
