This Sunday you should be expecting a gift of “Five Golden Rings” from your true love. This is, after all, the fifth day of Christmas, and according to the carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, five golden rings is the appropriate gift of this day. I hope that all of you had a very blessed and merry Christmas. Although the secular world is putting Christmas away already, the Church continues to celebrate Christmas for the next two weeks, up until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. On the first Sunday after Christmas, the Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. As we look at the manger scenes set up at this time of year, we see Mary and Joseph gazing lovingly at the tiny infant wrapped in a swaddling cloth lying in the manger. The infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the Holy Family we honor today. The Gospel writings speak very little about the life of the Holy Family in the years before Jesus’ public ministry. All that is related to us is that, after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple. Then, after the visit of the Magi, the Holy Family had to flee into Egypt to escape King Herod’s search for the Child. Next, we are told of their return to Nazareth after the death of King Herod. Finally, there was the incident that occurred when the Holy Family made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old. Since they traveled in the company of other people, Joseph and Mary did not notice that Jesus was not with them. Joseph and Mary immediately returned to Jerusalem to search for Him. After a long search, (the Gospel says three days) Joseph and Mary found Jesus in the temple conversing with the elders, teachers and rabbis. All we are told is that Jesus returned with them to Nazareth, where He “advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man”. Without a doubt, the family is the most important community of every human being born into this world. This is all a part of God’s unique plan for each of us. No one comes into this world alone. We are all born into a ready-made community, which is our family. No matter how big or how small, our family is our home. We are made this way because we are all reflections of God himself, individually and collectively. We reflect God as individual beings, but we reflect Him more perfectly as One in Three, in the unity of our families. As God is one in three, we are also one in three…or four or five or six. We are all made in the image and likeness of God. As we contemplate the meaning and importance of family on this Holy Family Sunday, may we be grateful to God for the gift of our families and let us pray that we will always do our best in trying to make our families the loving and supportive communities of our lives as they were intended by our Creator to be. The year 2019 is coming to an end. Let us be thankful for all that we have experienced this year, remembering that God has been with us every step of the way. As we ring out the old year, may we look forward to the promise of the New Year 2020 to come. Each New Year is a new beginning for us. It is a gift from God, and an opportunity to be renewed and better than we’ve ever been. May the New Year be filled with good health, happiness and peace for everyone! [tÑÑç axã lxtÜ ECEC XäxÜçÉÇx4 On New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1, 2020, the octave of Christmas, the Church celebrates the solemn feast of the Motherhood of Mary. Mary was chosen by God to be the Mother of His Divine Son. On the cross Jesus willed that His Mother be the Mother of us all. The Apostle John, on behalf of the entire Church, accepted Mary to be our Mother. Ever since then, Mary has guided the Church and continually leads us all to her Son. The feast of the Motherhood of Mary has again been designated in our Diocese as a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be a 12:00 midnight mass at on New Years Eve. Masses on January 1 will be at 8:00am, 10:00am and 12:00noon (in Polish) & 6:00pm. 2 — O L L V C C D 29, 2019 MASS INTENTIONS TODAY’S READINGS Saturday, December 28 - The Holy Innocents First Reading — Those who honor and comfort their 3:30pm: Confessions parents shall never be forgotten (Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14). 4:30pm: †Kenneth Gabrik Psalm — Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in Sunday, December 29 - The Holy Family of his ways (Psalm 128).
