A Newsletter for Wolds Valley Residents ISSUE 94 ● AUGUST 2013

Final copy date 18th August for the A View from House September issue to:- Trevor Thomson THE WOLDS ––– AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY? Gypsey Cottage, Main Road, Weaverthorpe, In recent weeks East Riding of Council has invited Natural YO17 8EY to designate the Yorkshire Wolds as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Telephone: 01944 738804 (AONB). AONBs are nationally important landscapes of such outstanding Email: [email protected] natural beauty that they are given the same level of statutory protection from (DISCLAIMER: Any correspondence/articles inappropriate development as applies in National Parks. In this region, there printed in the Warbler are entirely the are existing AONBs covering the Howardian Hills and the Lincolnshire Wolds. responsibility of the contributor) Although one of the principal purposes of designating an AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape to ensure its survival for future generations, it is nevertheless recognised that the countryside is not a museum and it is important to stress that AONB status must not be used to prevent or stagnate progress into the future. Even if the preliminary application is approved by Natural England, the process to formal designation is likely to take several years to achieve and could lead to a Public Inquiry. As part of the process, all interested parties in the area, including local farmers, landowners, residents and the tourism industry would be invited to give their views. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the above in the likely event that this initiative comes before Ryedale District Council for comment and (possible) approval. As always, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] regarding any issue that falls within the District Council’s control.

If you had to finish that sentence, I wonder what you Services for the Month of August would say? I would not be surprised if the majority of us finished that sentence very negatively, particularly after all that violence we have seen Anglican Churches flaring up in Northern Ireland again between the Protestants and Catholics. One angry Orangeman 4th August 10.30 Holy Communion at St Mary’s West Lutton shouted at the reporter, " No one is going to tell me I 18.00 Evensong at St Mary’s Wharram cannot walk this 300 hundred yards from my church!" 11th August 09.00 Matins at St Andrew’s Kirby Grindalythe That was on Saturday and if that man really was in 10.30 Holy Communion at St Peter’s Helperthorpe his church the next day then he would have heard a 10.30 Morning Prayer at St Mary’s Wharram gospel reading all about loving his neighbour... I 17.00 Songs of Praise at St Andrew’s Weaverthorpe wonder what he made of it? The trouble with this message is that it is too familiar: " Oh yeh, yeh, that 18th August 09.00 Holy Communion at St Mary’s West Lutton bit ...'love our neighbour'...and the Good Samaritan, 10.30 Holy Communion at St Mary’s Wharram yeh yeh got that bit too. Now can we just sing our 17.00 All Age Service at St Andrew’s Weaverthorpe last hymn so that I can go and beat the living daylights out of the nearest policeman, or better still 25th August 09.00 Holy Communion at St Andrew’s Kirby Grindalythe the nearest Catholic!" 10.30 Holy Communion at St Andrew’s Weaverthorpe And while we are talking about this sort of religious hypocrisy, the lawyer in the gospel is not much 10.30 Morning Prayer at St Mary’s Wharram better: Luke tells us that he wanted to trap Jesus 17.00 Songs of Praise at St Peter’s Helperthorpe with his question, and later, when he asks Jesus, "Who is my neighbour?" he did so because he A New Sunday School will be starting at Helperthorpe Church on 2 nd Sunday in every month at A New Sunday School will be starting at Helperthorpe Church wanted to justify himself. 10.30am. Christians are hypocrites, they literally do not practice what they preach. And if you give them any longer they will go on to say that most of the world's Wolds Valley Methodist Church, Weaverthorpe problems at the moment are caused by two different (Serving the whole Wolds Valley) religious groups fighting each other. Religion gets a really bad name, so much that people would much 4th August 15.00 Worship led by Rev. Mark Haynes rather say they are spiritual and NOT religious. The word religion comes from a Latin word 're-ligare' 11th August 15.00 United Service led by Rev. Elizabeth Clark and Rev. Andy Bowden which literally means to re-connect.. the exact opposite of how we see most people using their own 18th August 15.00 Worship led by Rev. Peter Cross religions to divide and break down! What are we meant to 're-connect'? When the lawyer in this story 25th August 15.00 Worship led by Mr. Norman Clark recites to the two great commandments: Love God All services are followed by a cup of tea or coffee and a chat about local life. and love your neighbour as yourself we can see exactly what we should be re-connecting to: 1. God; Coffee Mornings 2. Each Other; 3. Self. Jesus said,”If you do this you Coffee mornings continue every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 10.00 until 11.30 will live”, in other words, if you stop doing this you will die... Baptisms, funerals or other enquiries should be addressed to: In the story, Jesus says to the lawyer, “go and do Rev Elizabeth Clark ——— Tel: 01944 710757 likewise”…. no ifs, buts or maybes, get on and start loving those around you whoever they are!
