Husband's Notes (Continued) BENNETTS Johnsons and Colliers Direct line to Edith Beach Sipple Patrick Bennet blazed a trail from Mass. to Ohio. He settled on Big Indian Creek His family came in covered wagons with four other families: Johnsons,Colliers, Sharps and Longs. this was about 1801-05. Patrick Bennet was born in Ireland and died in America ca. 1836. the 1830 census listed him as an alien. Patrick married 1st in Ireland Elizabeth Smith wo was born in Belfast, married 2nd Margaret . His children: James Bennet, b. ca. 1780 in Ireland (Trustee 1819-1820 and 1827); Mary Bennet, b. 1782 in Ireland, Stephen Bennet, b. 1783 in Ireland, d. 1864; Jesse Bennett, b. 1795 Washington Co, Pa, d. 1879, married 23 january 1823 by Elijah Fee, Elizabeth Manning; Jane Bennet, b. 1796 in Ohio, married 20 April 1820 by Elijah Fee, Jonathan Boys--they lived in Rushville, Indiana; John Bennet, b. 1797 in Kentucky, married 1st Susanna Newberry, married 2nd Mary losby.Probably more--it's said he had three not mentioned in his will. He settled on land that had bright shining patticles in the soil. Thinking this was gold--they could not find the source. Maybe theIndians knew. they dug a pit and covered it with tree branches to trap them an Indian. They caught one. They tried to make his tell where the gold was, he wouldn't or couldn't, so rather than let him starve they released him. this had to happen before 1811 because all Indians were gone from Ohio by that date. Mary Ann Bennet was just four years of age when they settled on Big Indian. she is thought to be a granddaughter of Patrick. She married 1st 17 December 1840 by Jas. McNeel MG to Wm. Johnson, married 2nd Wm. Collier, buried Pt. Isabel,Ohio--no marker. Mary ann's children:Jane Johnson m. 1st Lucinda Walton, m. 2nd Thomas 1. Copied from: Atlas of Rush County, Indiana, 1879.Published by : J .H. Beers & Ceo, Lakeside Bldg. Chicago, lIIinois: JESSE BENNETT The battle of life, in whatever respect considered, is a hard one to fight, and praise is do the man who in youth wisely looks ahead and provides for the future; who, while vigorous and strong, labors kiligently to acquire a competence, remembering that the years will speed silently away leaving gray hairs and a tottering frame. We admire the man who, realizing this fact, embraces and improves opportunities; for, truly, "there is a tide in the affairs of men which, raken at the flood leads on to fortune." There is a chord in the human breast rhat vibrates with pleasure when we see a man so fortunate as to launce his bark upon this tide, to be ultimatley borne, through storms and sunshine, to the haven of comfort and plenty. Such is the experience through life of Jesse Bennett. he was born in Washington County, Pa, May 12, 1795, and was the sixth in a family of nine children, only two of whom are living, viz., himself and Mrs. Jane Boys, of Rushville; his parents were Patrick Bennett and Elizabeth (Smith) Bennett natives of Belfast, Ireland; they migrated to the United States before the Revolutionary was, settling in Pennsylvania where Jesse "first say the light'; they afterwared moved to Fleming County, Ky.; thence to Clermont County, Ohio, where they resided until they were laid beneath the sod, leaving behind not much of this world's riches, but good precepts, and a name bey90nd reproach as an inheritance to their children; Jesse remainded with his parents some time after he attained his manhood, believing it his duty to help his father support the family; he rhen began to hire out as a farm hand, working at rhe rate oHrom $7 to $10 per month, and in harvest for 25 and 50 cents per day; rhus did he commence life's battle. In 1812, he volunteered in defense of his country against British aggression, but on arriving at Dayton, Ohio, he found the quota filled, and was reluctantly compelled to return to his home; this he ever afterward regretted, as the rich Celtic blood in his veins burned to be revenged on rhe cruel and bloodthirsty persecutors of his ancestors, who not only stole their land, but also their liberty. In 1821, he came out to Indiana and entered land in See. 25, Township 13, R9, and engaged a man to build on it a log cabin; he returned to Ohio and was married January 23,1823, in Clermont county,Ohio, November 5,1803. Mr. Bennett having no manner or conveeyance of his own, his uncle kinkly volunteered to bring him and wife with a small amount of provisions to the new country, where they arrived in March, 1823, being then about two months married; on arriving he found no house built, and only one log hewed for rhe building; but here he was, and here he determinged to remain, and wirh a stout heart he went to work and built what is called "a camp:, using as a fire-place a log heap on the open side, in this humble building, he and his wife lived three months; and, he says, "I never spent a happier three months in my life." The following children have been born to rhem--James, bornJan 12,1824; William,Nov 21,1825, died Sept 23,1872; Mary Jane, Sept 21, 1827 (deceased); Sarah Ellen,Mar 14,1831 (deceased);Francis Marion,JuI2, 1835; Caroline Elizabeth, May 15, 1837; and Margaret Ann, Nov 12, 1840. For the long period of forty-seven years,Mr.Bennett enjoyed the companionship of his faithful wife; but not even the power of love could stay the hand of the dread messenger,Death, and Sept 22, 1870, the loving wife and mother fell a victum to his power, leaving a void in the household and heart of her companion, which has never been filled. She was a member of the M.E. church, to which denomination he also belongs; and trusting in that blessed Word whose precepts were her light rhrough life, her bereaved husband awaits in patience the day when he shall join her in that kingdom where "there shall be no more sorrow, neither shall rhere be weeping." Mrs. Bennett was one of thsoe women so common amoung the wives of pioneers; she was industrious and economical, and he owes much of his success in life to her; and although she "sleeps the sleep that knows no waking," we feel assured that her memory will ever remain green in the affections of her children; her husband says, "she never misprepresented a fact or told me an untruth"; what a noble tribute to the dead wife and mother. Mr. Bennett's advantages in youth for an education were limited, but he acqui8red enough to enable his to transact and attend to his own business matters. Politically, he has been a stanch Democrat all his life, and has voted for every Presidential nominee of the party, from James Monroe to SamuelJ. Tilden; he has been a very successful farmer, and has always had the respect and confidence of his neighbors; although commencing in life poor, he has owned in this county about 700 acres of land, all of which he made by hard work and economy; he still retains his homested of 434 acres in See. 30, Township 13, RIO Rushville Township, on which he has passed most of his life; and now, at the age of 84 years, can look back to hte time when Rush County was a wilderness; he has seen it's dense forests melt away before the determined spirit of the pioneer, and in it's place come the fields of waving grain surrounding the farmers home on every side; the bridle-path and blazed track, give way to the splendid turnpike, and the swampy marsh become the site of business blocks filled with life and wealth; all this he has seen and can proudly and truthfully say that he has done his share toward this wonderful growth adn development; in his old age, he still retains those vigorous and industrious habits that

Husband's Notes (Continued) characterized him proudly through life; he was always the friend of religious and education, but was never sectarian in his views, believing that all are striving to do good, he has helped every church regardless of creed; his honesty and integrity were ever above reproach, and he has set an example that the young men of today would do well to follow and emulate.

Written 1874: THE MYSTERY SOLVED: Over four weeks since,J.W. Magill, of the firm of Collins & Magill, quietly took the train one evening, creating the impression on his friends that he was going on a two weeks trip to visit friends in Illinois. Two weeks rolled around an Billy failed to put in an appearance, since when, very meager tidings have been received of his whereabouts, causing, as a natural consequence, a considerable amount of anxious inquiry and speculation. Not finding the soil, or climate, or society of Illinois as aggreable as might have been anticipated, he perambulated into Missouri where he was met by warm and ardent friends. But the sight of one that was fairer, more amiable to him than all others, met his gaze. Fond recollections of days of yore sped thick and fast o'er his mind. The shade of the old peach tree in his father's yard; the ice on the pond by the mill; the old time game of hide and seek; the nocturnal promenades to and from spelling school, from singing and church; and love, which had been dreaming, intuitively sprung into action, which our hero desired not to suppress, and it was said, "what God has joined together, let no man put asunder."It is now no more Miss Jennie Manning, but Mrs. J .W. Magill. they arrived at Spencer safe and sound on the express Thursday, and took supper with Mr. Collins. should clouds ever overshadow them, may they have a silver lining, and their passage through life be successful to them and honorable to their well wishers. Article from "Clermont County, Ohio 1980"--page 190/1: MAL'JNING FAMILY Manning--a surname found in Clermont County from 1795 to the present day.During that time span, at least four unrelated Manning family lines have resided within its boundaries. the earlist group was that of Nathaniel Manning, Sr. and his wife, Jane. Numerous references have been made in earlier published records to some of the members of this family and an extensive family genealogy is being compiled for publication. Their know residence before coming to Clermont County was that part of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania now known as Snyder County. Prior to their proven resicence there in 1785, it is believed they were natives of New Jersey and had resided in Sussex County. Their connection to the Jeffrey Manning family has not, as yet, been firmly established. Another Manning family is that of Thomas Manning, Revolutionary soldier who is buried in Clermont county. thomas was born 15 June 1764, Stafford, Ct., and died 22 Dee. 1853, Ohio Twp., Clermont Co, Ohio, the son of Phineas Manning whose lineage and descendants are recorded in the Manning genealogy by Wm. H. Manning. The third Manning family is that of Daniel Manning (b. 1775/6 N.J., d. 1849 Cincinnati, Ohio), through his sons, John and Francis C. Manning, who took up residence in the area prior to 1840. They are descendants of Jeffrey and Hepzibah (Andrews) Manning of Piscataway, N.]. and are related to the Samuel Manning line in Warren Co., Ohio. The fourth Manning family is that of Elisha Manning, b. ca. 1775 Norwich, Ct., son of william Manning, Revolutionary soldier who settled first inTioga Twp., Lycoming Co., Pa. and by 1809 comes to Franklin co.,Ohio. Elisha enlisted in the army there in 1815 and served five years, most of this time at Newport, Kv. By 1830, Elisha and his wife, Lucy, had moved to Neville, Washington Twp., Clermont Co., Ohio. although Elisha

Husband's Notes (Continued) and his wife move on to Bracken Co,Ky, at least two of thier children, Hiram and John, come back to Clermont County. Descendanrs of the latter reside near Moscow, Ohio. Unfottunatley, the previously published accounrs of Clermont county Mannings sometimes confused this line with that of Elisha, son of Nathaniel and Jane mentioned in the beginning. There are brief appearances of other Manning-Mannon families whose connections have not been clearly established. One family had its origin in Va. and Ky. and do not arrive until much later. Another family is believed to be part of the Mannon family of Adams, Brown and Highland Counties due to the consistent spelling of the name of Mannon. MANNING: My family members were: Dorothy (Magill) Walters, b. 1912; Robert Dale Magill, b. 1888, d. 1918; Dora Helms, b. 1891, d. 1976; John W. Magill, b. 1848, d. 1926; Eliza Jane (Jenny) Manning, b. 1857, d. 1936; Absalom M. Manning, b. 1825, Clermont cjo, Ohio, d. 1893, Mo.; Sarah Coffman, b. 1822, Clermont Co., d. 1903. The following is copies from handwriting on the front page of the family Bible belonging to my great grandfather, Absalom M. Manning, which shows he was a native of Clermont Co.: "A.M. and Sarah (Coffman) Manning were born and raised in Clermont County, Ohio and migrated from there to Owen Co,Indiana, in the fall of 1856,and from there to Sullivan Co, Missouri, April 15, 1872; from there to Shelby co, Missouri, March 1,1888. A.M. Manning died in Shelbina, Mo., Feb. 22, 1893." These Mannings moved around a bit more also for Absalom and Sarah Manning are in the 1850 Brown Co. census and I have Absalom's Master Masons Diploma dated 10 Sept. 1855, Felicity, Ohio. The above Sarah Coffman was the daughter of John and Susan Coffman. the following information on them is from "Monument Inscriptions prior to 1900 from cemeteries of Clermont co, Ohio:" Wells Cem., 1 mile east ofMt. Olive Tate Twp.;John Coffman, b. 12 May 1782, d. 17 Oct 1874;Susan Coffman, b. 1 Apr 1799, d. 14 Apr. 187L This John and Susan Coffman were great, great grandparenrs of mine. another interesting fact is information on a loose paper found in my Manning Bible. It tells offamily data on Elisha Manning, a name appearing in the early history of Clermont Co., as well as those of his sons. Elisha Manning was born Jan. 8, 1766. Jane Manning, wife of Elisha Manning, was born Jan. 14, 1772. Elizabeth Manning was born Feb 2, 1793. Joshua Manning was born June 8, 1795. Absalom Manning was born May 26, 1797. Jane Manning was born June 16, 1799. Mary Manning was born June 6, 180!. John Manning was born July 20,1804. Hill & Co, pulb.), page 363: Elisha Manning, homeopathic physician and surgeon, Amboy, was born in Rush County,Indiana, Septermber 7, 1845. His paternal grandfather's family removed in an early time from Pennsylvania to Ohio; and, when his father was a young lad they came to Indiana. In 1850 his parents,Hiram and Elizabeth (Moore) Manning, settled in Jasper county, Illinois, where they have since lived. From there the doctor enlisted in Co.F, 46th Illinois Volunteers, in the autumn of 1861. He fought at Shiloh, was in the siege fo Corinth, the battle of the Hatchie, and the siege of Vicksburg; and after the capitulation of the latter place campaigned in , Tennesse, Arkansas and Louisiana, and as was usual saw a good deal of hard service and small fighting. Afterward he was at the raking of Fott Blakely and the city of Mobile. He "veteraned" January 4, 1864. His regiment held its organization four and one-half years, and 1,700 altogether were enrolled in it. He was mustered out at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, January 20, 1866, and paid off and disbanded at Camp Butler, Springfield, illinois, February L From this time til the spring of 1873, he devoted himself to study. He attended the Freepott high school, and graduated there in June, 1870. During patt of his army service he was general assistant in hospital, and this drew his attention to the medical profession and excited a desire to become a physician. He now began reading medicine with Dr. N.F. Prentice, of Freeport; and in the years 1871-2-3 attended lectures at Hahneman Medical College, Chicago, and graduated from that institution March 21, 1873. He located in Freepott in the office of his old preceptor who had just died, but in June, 1874, removed to Amboy, where he has secured a good practice. He is a member of the Illinois State Homeopathic Association and of the Rock River Valley Medical Association, and belongs to the United Workman and to the Legion of Honor. In politics he is a republican. In 1881 he received the appointment of examining surgeon for pensions in Lee county. The doctor is a Presbyterian and Mrs. Manning is a Congregationalist. He was married October 3, 1878, to Miss Clara E.Prentice, of Rockford. They have one son.

Elisha was received into membership of the Second Congregational Church of Rockford in July, 1882. Their residence was at 908 Notth Main Street in Rockford.

On 1 Mar. 1871 Elisha Manning, a single man of Stephenson County, Illinois, granted a quit claim deed to Hamson Moore of Rush County, Indiana, for land in the E1/2, NW 1/4, Section 34, Township 13,Range 9---land formerlv owned bv the father of Harrison Moore and Elizabeth Last Modified: 7 Jun 1997 Created 11 Sep 1997 by Reunion for Wmdows Page 2of2 Husband (Dr.) Elisha Manning

Wife Clara Elizabeth Prentice Husband's Notes (Continued) (Moore) Manning. (Deeds 22:22).

In his enlistment record in the lllinois State Archives, Elisha's residence was given as Clay City, Clay County, Illinois; he was not in that area, however, when the 1860 census was taken. His inlistment record also gave a physical descrittion of Elisha: five feet three and one-half inches tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes.

Dr. E. Manning and Mrs. C.E. Manning were listed as boarders in a hotel on Main Street, Amboy Illinois in 1880. The hotel was run by Julia Keefer. The birthplace for each of them was given as New York; that Clara had ties to New York is evident from the fact that, after Elisha's death, Bruce Hiram, their nine year old son, was sent to Vernon, New York to live with his cousin (family name of Judson) because there wasn't enought money coming in to keep the family together.

Elisha died at age 51 years, 11 months and 17 days. Wife's Notes Daughter of Miles S. Prentice and Mary Almira Notton.

At the estate sale of John's brother-in-law,Jeriah Wood, Sept 13, 1806, John bought seven geese for $3.55; one scythe and a whetstone for $.75; Jeriah's hand saw and a knife for $2.13 and his augur and some chisels for $1.86. After John's sister, Mary (Manning) Wood, wife of the above deceased J eriah Wood, died, her son, Abraham, was allowed to choose his own guardian. In the microfilmed misc. probate records of Clermont co, a guardianship bond dated Aug 15, 1815, is recorded whereby Abram Wood, then aged fourteen, chose his uncle,John Manning. John and his friend and neighbor, John Buchannon, put up the bond for $250, payable to Nicholas Sink, treasurer of Clermont County. 1820 Census: Franklin Twp, Clermont Co, Ohio: 1 male 45 & over; 2 male 18-25; 1 male 10-15; 3 male under 10; 1 female 45 & over; 3 female 10-15; 1 female under 10. 1830 Census: Franklin Twp, Clermont Co, Ohio: 1 male 50 under 60; 2 male 20 under 30; 1 male 10 under 15; 1 male 5 under 10; 1 female 50 under 60; 1 female 30 under 40; 1 female 5 under 10; 2 female under 5. 1840 Census: Franklin Twp, Clermont co, Ohio: 1 male 60 under 70; 2 male 20 under 30; 1 female 60 under 70; 1 female 10 under 20. 1850 Census: Clermont Co, Ohio: John, 80, farmer, b. From HISTORY OF CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO; Washington twp: p.363: After Mr. Gregg had vacated his improvements at Neville, William Buchanan concluded to find another home near by, if a location could be found that would suit him. working his way through the forests to the table-lands south of Indian Creek, he selected a fine tract of 300 acres, on which he settled in the fall of 1795.----- William Buchanan died in 1805. He was married in 1789 to Jane Abrams, and had a family of four children,--Enoch, James, Margaret, and Jane. Both the sons moved to Illinois before 1836. Margaret married John Wood, and Jane became the wife of Samuel Richards. The widow Buchanan maintained that relation six years, when she married Absalom Wood, being twelve years his senior. she died in 1854, aged eighty-four years, and for he last fifty years of her life had lived on the Joseph Barkley place. The original Buchanan farm is now occupied by J.R. Brown, at the Calvary meeting-house. The widow Buchanan was the possessor of more than ordinary courage, and well calculated to endure the hardships through which she passed as the first woman in Washington, if not, indeed, in the county. In 1801, in the company of her brother and others, she made a trip to her old home in Pennsylvania, going up the Ohio in a small boat, doing the cooking for the men as they landed, and completing the remainder ofhte journey from Pittsburgh on horseback By her marriage with Absalom Wood she had three children,--Florella c., who married Joseph Barkley, and died on the homestead; John H., who married Mary Barkley, and yet resides in the townsip near Neville; and William H., who married a daughter of Dowty Utter, and died in Washington in the fall of 1879.

Came from Kentucky to Clermont County, Ohio ca. Fall 1795. Will written 8 Jul 1808; lerters granted 18 Oct 1808; inventory filed 21 Feb 1809; administrators: Margaret Wood and Absolom Wood. From HISTORY OF CLER.\10NT COUNTY, OHIO; Washington rwp; p.362-363: About the same time (fall of 1795) John, David, and Jeriah Wood and Elisha and John Manning, brothers-in-law of the former Ithe Woods), with their families, came from Kentucky, nad after some difficulty succeeded in reaching a fme spring about a mile from the cabin of William Buchanan, where they determined to locate temporarily. After the pioneer manner in Kentucky, they erected a stockade of heavy timber around their buildings and a small clearing for protection against possible attack by the Indians, who had not yet entirely left the country. This was know to the settlers as Mannings' Station and later, from the owner, as Miller's Station. The station was never attacked, but it gave the occupants and the people in that part of the county a sense of security which they could not have felt without its existence. It is related that the station was a general resort for the incoming settlers, and that Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone sometimes sojourned there. On many occasions William Buchanan would take his family and cattle to the stockade and abide there until the presence of Indians was no longer reported by the scouts. For the first few years the Woods and Mannings occupied themselves in clearing up the land around the station, and some time before 1800 were rewarded for their labors by Nathaniel Massey, the agent of the owner of the Buckner survey, who gave them title-bonds for lands in neighboring surveys, on which they afterwards made their homes. The station and the surrounding improvements became the property of Martin Miller, and the timbers used in the construction of the stockade walls were early removed and used for other purposes. John Wood, the eldest of the brothers that came to Mannings' Station, was one of the early associate judges, and while attending court at Williamsburgh fell itt, dying the next day after he was brought to his home north of Neville. He had five sons and two daughters, Joseph, who married Marv Hodge and died in Tate sixty years ago; Absalom, the husband of the widow Buchanan; William removed to Illinois, as did also
