WGEM once again partnered with the United Way of Adams County as a sponsor for their “Restaurant Days”. The local restaurants that participate in this event that runs through the end of the year, give a portion of their sales on Wednesdays to The United Way.    

Sports Director, Tony Cornish, Jr. spoke to the Quincy Exchange Club about the status of local sports and how they are impacted during this national pandemic. He also answered questions from the members. ⇐⇐ ⇐ ⇐

Missouri held a Primary Election in August and WGEM provided live coverage from various locations giving up to the minute updates on all of the major issues on the ballot.    

General Manager Carlos Fernandez, Marketing Manager Shawn Dickerman, Director of Operations Jim Lawrence along with production team members Andrew McCulloch and Devin Christmon worked with the Quincy Community Theatre to produce 7 videos for their Ghostlight Concert. The concert aired virtually and was used to help raise funds for the theatre which has not put on a public performance since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. ⇐⇐ ⇐ ⇐

La Harpe Elementary School teacher Melissa Johnson was awarded the September Golden Apple Award. She is in her 15th year of teaching and is teaching 1st grade this year.    

Quincy’s St. Francis School teacher Carla Slough was the recipient of the October Golden Apple award. Having spent more than 3 in the classroom, her teaching career has been a journey. ⇐⇐ ⇐ ⇐

Recognizing the need in Adams County, WGEM and the Quincy Herald Whig made a donation to the United Way of Adams County to help them with their 2020 Annual Campaign.

A new towercam, the 5th in our system, was installed on the TV/FM tower on the East side of Quincy allowing us to provide our viewers with aerial views from a new vantage point in the community. This will allow us to keep an eye on the weather systems that impact our area. ⇐⇐ ⇐ ⇐

The Mark Twain Museum in Hannibal is now home to a number of vignettes that appear throughout Hannibal historical sites. Their focus is to share information about Mark Twain. WGEM’s production team helped film and produce the short videos which help the visitors visualize the rich history of Mark Twain and Hannibal.    

Great River Honor Flight Chairman, Carlos Fernandez, along with members of the Honor Flight board helped celebrate the 105th birthday of Jim Haslem, Navy WWII veteran who served on a minesweeper in the Atlantic and Mediterranean in July.

Haslem was presented with a lanyard, cap, t-shirt, quilt, mail call letters, and a photo book of the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. WGEM has been a main supporter of the Honor Flight program since its start locally in 2009. There were no flights scheduled in 2020 due to Covid. The hope is that missions can restart in 2021. In the past 10 years, there have been 57 missions which have given 1,853 local veterans the Honor Flight experience.

Representatives of and WGEM presented Gates Air CEO, Bryant Gurke, with a Gates BT-35 transmitter which was Gates’ first color BT series transmitter which WGEM utilized for many years. The transmitter will be displayed in a company museum at the Gates Air facility in Quincy.    

Hannibal LaGrange University received a $30,000 donation on behalf of WGEM and the Herald Whig to be used for purchasing equipment for their Communication Studies department. In addition, Hannibal-LaGrange University will be offering students at HLGU a pre-internship experience by turning news packages to be shared on the website/social media of the Hannibal Courier-Post and Herald-Whig and eventually prepare students for working with WGEM in news, marketing, and production.
