Welcome

Ioannina Cardiovascular Education 2006 Over the last 5 years the ICE congresses have gained both scientific and organisational success and have built up and unequalled reputation in the field of Interventional Cardiology.

The ICE organising committees have endeavoured every year to make subtle changes to the programme of the congress so as to keep abreast with ongoing advancement of medical knowledge. This year one of the most challenging changes has been incorporated, since the congress will be the result of a joint effort not only of the Working Groups of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology and Nursing of the Hellenic Cardiological Society and the Michaelidion Cardiac Centre, but also of the Hellenic Society of Vascular Surgery.

The programme has been designed so as to include educational sessions regarding the management of the whole spectrum of the cardiovascular diseases. Coronary and peripheral vascular live cases will be broadcast, and will be coupled with the multiple choice questions (MCQs) session the didactic lectures and the focused workshops. The programme will also be enriched by a number of focused workshops, simulator training sessions and will embrace an educational course on radiation protection organised by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission.

The expanded ICE 2006 educational programme emphasises the benefits that flow to the patients through real multidisciplinary collaboration. Interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons and radiologists bring different perspective, knowledge base and skill to the management of the cardiovascular patient.

ICE 2006 aspires to meet the needs of all physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in the management of patients with heart and vascular diseases.

Finally, this three-day learning experience aims at forming the basis of long-term friendships, contacts and networking.

 Programme Content

The ICE 2006 programme is designed to encourage participation, interaction and to achieve an exciting learning experience. Highlights of the programme will include the following aspects: Workshops Four different pre-congress Workshops will be held in parallel on Thursday, December 7th, at 17.00 – 20.00 hours. Only pre-registered applicants will participate in the four Workshops. Open Surgery Hands-on: Improve your Skills. The workshop will train both the beginner and the experienced trainee (in Vascular Surgery), in three common settings of open surgical treatment of vascular disease. These will be abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy and peripheral arterial reconstructions. Carotid Stenting. The workshop will enable the beginner and the experienced interventionalist to learn many practical aspects of carotid stenting and in particular patient and lesion selection and how to use the protection devices and minimize complications. The participants will also have the opportunity to get familiar with carotid stenting, trained in virtual reality simulators. PFO and ASD Closure. The workshop will provide attendees with specific knowledge regarding the selection of patients with PFO and ASD who will benefit of the new technique. Also, the attendees will learn the special merits of the different devices. EVAR for AAA: Tips and Tricks. The workshop will provide attendees with the latest information on the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms. Patient selection planning of the procedure complications and follow-up will be discussed in detail. Live Cases Live Cardiac and Vascular Case demonstrations will be broadcast on Friday and Saturday (at 09.00 to 14.00 hours, respectively). They will present challenging complex coronary and vascular interventions and will allow for a complete understanding of the implementation of newly developed devices. Commentary will be provided by a panel of experts, while the cases will be interspersed with lectures on topics of interest to attendees. Case Review These sessions will outline different interventional or vascular surgical procedures including indication, technical adjuncts, potential complications, and limitations. In addition the interesting cases will include challenging case presentations with expert opinions regarding the management of coronary and vascular cases. A special cardiac review session will be dedicated to a number of Balkan hospitals (Saturday, December 9th, at 17.00 – 18.30 hours). Handheld devices for interaction to MCQs will be distributed to participants. Round Tables During these sessions national and international faculty will present their experience on different topics of interest. Talking with the Experts Two sessions will be held focusing on the management of stable angina patients. Multiple Choice Questions Sessions (MCQs) The session will offer the attendees the possibility to assess their understanding of the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Handheld devices for interaction to MCQs will be distributed to participants.

Educational Course on Radiation Protection (2 Days) ICE 2006 incorporates a Radiation Protection Course jointly organised with the Greek Atomic Energy Commission. This two-day course on Radiation Protection in Interventional Cardiology & Endovascular Surgery will be held on Friday and Saturday, December 8th and 9th, from 15.00 – 17.00 hours. The course is addressed to all interventionalists and their supporting staff and medical facility managers. Participation in the course is strictly limited to pre-registered applicants. Participants must attend the entire course (both days) participate in the short written examination (at the end of the course) and obtain a Certificate of Attendance (at a later date and after evaluation of their written examination). Procedures comprising fluoroscopically therapeutic and/or diagnostic interventions result in substantial radiation burden to both patients and staff. The aim of this course is to provide practical advice that will minimize radiation risks to the patient and the involving staff. Nursing Session This session, will be held for a second consecutive year, and targets nurses who work in Cardiac Departments, Cath Labs, Cardiac Rehabilitation Units and Heart Failure Clinics. IVUS Course An IVUS Course will run independently through the three-day congress. The course will be organised by Dr. J. M.R. Ligthart who is an IVUS expert of the Thorax Centre. The course, which can be attended by either beginners or experienced interventionalists, will begin with a review of the fundamentals and finally will bring participants up to full speed with all components of coronary interrogation using IVUS. Participation in the course is strictly limited to registered applicants. Simulator Training Medical simulation systems allow physicians to gain experience and confidence in a realistic, low-risk environment. In addition, they enable physicians to have hands-on practice with a number of technical and problem-solving skills in a short period of time. Participation in the course is strictly limited to pre-registered applicants. The training session workshop has been made possible with the generous support of Boston Scientific Hellas. Interactive participation (through handheld devices) will be encouraged through the following sessions: Friday, December 8th 09.00 – 11.00 Hall B - Case Review Session (Vascular) Eight Interesting and Didactic Cases from different Greek Hospitals 17.00 – 18.30 Hall B - Case Review Session (Cardiac) Five Cases focused on Interventional Challenges Saturday, December 9th 09.00 – 11.00 Hall B - Case Review Session (Cardiac) Five Cases focused on Interventional Challenges 11.45 – 14.00 Hall B - MCQs Session (Cardiac) Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes
