PROLOGUE

A shadowy figure emerges through the beams of a green mist. He is the CASINO BOSS who turns and addresses the audience.

GREEN LIGHT

(recited) CASINO BOSS IN A PLACE WHERE THE SUN HAS FORGOTTEN TO SHINE AND THE MOON HAS FORGOTTEN TO RISE WHERE THE FACES ARE GREY AND THEY LIVE JUST TO PLAY AND YOU WON’T SEE A LIGHT IN THEIR EYES

AND THE EAST COULD BE WEST AND THE NORTH COULD BE SOUTH AND YOU CAN’T TELL YOUR LEFT FROM YOUR RIGHT BUT DISASTER IS ONLY A HEARTBEAT AWAY AND IT’S COLD IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT

IN A LAND WHERE THE SUN HAS FORGOTTEN TO SHINE AND THE RAIN NEVER FALLS BUT IT POURS WHERE THE GAME NEVER ENDS AND THEY DON’T EVER CLOSE SO THEY DON’T NEED A LOCK ON THE DOORS

AND THERE ISN’T A WINDOW YOU CAN’T SEE THE SKY AND YOU WON’T FIND A CLOCK ON THE WALL BUT THEY COME HERE FOR FORTUNE THEY COME HERE FOR FAME AND THEY END UP BY LOSING IT ALL

5 As the CASINO BOSS sings, the Peking Palace Casino evolves around him. The stage is filled with casino personnel and gamblers. Upstage centre is a grand entrance with a sign that reads “The Shangri-La Room – by invitation only”.

SCENE ONE THE PEKING PALACE CASINO

(sung) CASINO BOSS GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T STAND TOO CLOSE TO THE FIRE YOU’LL BURN YOUR FINGERS WHILE YOU’RE FULFILLING YOUR EVERY DESIRE

LUCK IS A STRANGER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS A KNIFE GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER RED LIGHT MEANS YOU’D BETTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

My dear friends, welcome to the Peking Palace, where dreams come true and prayers are answered. A temple to human… greed. Come my friends, come with me and enter Aladdin’s cave, because once you’ve experienced the exquisite pleasures of the green cloth, nothing else will satisfy. Oh, but I sense there are some non-believers in this congregation. Some of you are thinking “I’m just looking, I’m not a gambler, just an innocent bystander”, but my friends, in this place there is no such thing as “innocence”.

GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T FLY TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN AMBER MEANS WARNING THAT EVERY CHANCE IS A MILLION TO ONE

LUCK IS A STRANGER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS A KNIFE GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER RED LIGHT MEANS YOU’D BETTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

6 The CASINO BOSS makes the rounds greeting a number of male GUESTS gathered around a gaming table (á la final tableaux in TIME Act 2 Scene 5).

SO THE WHEEL MEN SPIN AND THE CARDMEN DEAL AND THE DICE COME TUMB-A-LING DOWN AND THE WINE SO FREE AND THE LIGHT SO BRIGHT THAT YOU CAN’T PUT YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND

AND THE DEALERS JOKE AS A CLOWN GOES BROKE ‘CAUSE HE JUST COULDN’T TAKE ANY MORE AND THEY COUNT UP THE TIPS AND THEY RAKE IN THE CHIPS AS ANOTHER ONE WALKS THROUGH THE DOOR

The GAMBLER enters and is greeted with open arms by the CASINO BOSS.

CASINO BOSS (Exaggerated) My dear friend, welcome to the Peking Palace. Let me introduce myself, I am the manager of this casino and if there is any way I can be of assistance?

GAMBLER Oh, I’m just looking. I don’t gamble.

The action freezes and the CASINO BOSS addresses the audience.

CASINO BOSS (Mockingly) “I’m just looking, I don’t gamble”. Well my friends, I am prepared to have a little bet with you. If I do my job well - and if I may say so, I do my job very well - this man will soon be gambling at our tables. If not, I’ll buy you all dinner. Do we have a deal? Yes?! So, you are gamblers after all.

GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T STAND TOO CLOSE TO THE FIRE YOU’LL BURN YOUR FINGERS WHILE YOU’RE FULFILLING YOUR EVERY DESIRE

The action resumes and the CASINO BOSS turns to the GAMBLER.

CASINO BOSS You don’t gamble. You are so wise. Are you here on business or pleasure?

GAMBLER A little of both.

CASINO BOSS Excellent. Which hotel are you staying at?

7 GAMBLER The Columbia.

CASINO BOSS The Columbia. Nice. Did they put you in one of their new suites?

The GAMBLER takes out his room key and looks at it.

GAMBLER I don’t think so. I’m in room 325.

CASINO BOSS Shame. Well, next time you and your wife should stay here at the Peking Palace.

GAMBLER I’m not married.

CASINO BOSS You are so wise.

COMPANY THERE’S A PLACE IN THE DESERT THAT LIES TO THE WEST WHERE YOU CAN’T TELL THE NIGHT FROM THE SUNRISE AND NOT ALL THE KING’S HORSES AND ALL THE KING’S MEN HAVE PREVENTED THE FALL OF THE UNWISE

AND WE THINK IT WILL MAKE OUR LIVES EASIER FOR GOD KNOWS UP ‘TIL NOW IT’S BEEN HARD BUT THE GAME NEVER ENDS WHEN YOUR WHOLE WORLD DEPENDS ON THE TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD

CASINO BOSS (Picks up phone) Get me a run down on a guest at the Columbia Hotel, room 325. (To the Audience). Don’t look at me like that. I’m just doing my job. Let me tell you how things operate here. To play, he needs money or we have to give him credit. He signs a marker - that’s a cheque to the casino - if he wins, we tear up the marker. If we win, we want to get paid. So I need to know exactly how much he’s worth. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Well in a casino, the way to a man’s money is through his weakness and we need to know just how much weakness this guy can afford. After all we have expensive overheads.

His mobile rings and the CASINO BOSS answers it.

Yep. Yep. (He hangs up) Credit wise it seems our friend is Mr. National Average, but I think there is a little juice for us to squeeze. Besides, we have a bet, and I hate to lose.

8 He spots someone leaving a slot machine and goes over to the GAMBLER.

Quick put some money in that machine. It hasn’t paid a jackpot in six weeks. Go on, put some money in.

GAMBLER Really, it’s not for me.

CASINO BOSS Here. (He takes out some coins) Play with these. You can’t lose.

GAMBLER I’m sorry, I don’t gamble.

CASINO BOSS You are so wise.

IN THE TWILIGHT GLOOM OF A BOOMTOWN ROOM IS A GAMBLER WITH HOLES IN HIS SHOES THOUGH HE ONCE HAD A HOME AND HE ONCE HAD A WIFE NOW HE’S BROKE AND THERE’S NO MORE TO LOSE AND HE DREAMED IN HIS DREAMS OF A GOLDEN KEY BUT IT LEFT HIM WITH NOWHERE TO GO FOR HE LOST HIS HEAD BET IT ALL ON THE RED AS THE BLACK CAME UP TEN IN A ROW

YOU CAN TRY TO LEAVE WHEN YOU HAVE THE CHANCE YOU CAN STAND UP AND WALK OUT THE DOOR YOU CAN WAVE GOODBYE TAKING ALL YOU’VE WON BUT WE KNOW THAT YOU’LL COME BACK FOR MORE FOR THE LIGHTS AND THE WINE ARE A HOOK AND A LINE AND THE FISH NEVER SEEM TO GET WISE AND THE SPIDER WHO’S PATIENTLY SPINNING HER WEB CAN BE CERTAIN OF CATCHING SOME FLIES

GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T STAND TOO CLOSE TO THE FIRE YOU’LL BURN YOUR FINGERS WHILE WE’RE FULFILLING YOUR EVERY DESIRE LUCK IS A STRANGER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS A KNIFE GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER RED LIGHT MEANS YOU’D BETTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

The CASINO BOSS shows the GAMBLER around the casino.

SO THE ICEMEN PLAY

9 AND THE STONEMEN PAY AND THE DICEMEN TUMBLE AND FALL AND THE CARDMEN DEAL AND THE WHEELMEN SPIN AND THE EYE IN THE SKY SEES IT ALL

The COMPANY all look up towards the surveillance camera, which flashes.

CASINO BOSS AND YOUR MIND SPINS ROUND AS THE CHIPS GO DOWN AND YOU CAN’T PUT YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND AND THE DEALERS JOKE AS A CLOWN GOES BROKE BUT THE WORLD KEEPS TURNING AROUND

GAMBLER & CASINO BOSS GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T FLY TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN AMBER MEANS WARNING THAT EVERY CHANCE IS A MILLION TO ONE

LUCK IS A STRANGER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS A KNIFE GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER RED LIGHT MEANS YOU’D BETTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

COMPANY THERE ARE UNSMILING FACES IN FETTERS AND CHAINS ON A WHEEL IN PERPETUAL MOTION AND WE FOLLOW THE RACES AND PLAY ALL THE GAMES WITH NO SHOW OF AN OUTWARD EMOTION AND WE THINK IT WILL MAKE OUR LIVES EASIER FOR GOD KNOWS UP ‘TIL NOW IT’S BEEN HARD BUT THE GAME NEVER ENDS WHEN YOUR WHOLE WORLD DEPENDS ON THE TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD NO THE GAME NEVER ENDS WHEN YOUR WHOLE WORLD DEPENDS ON THE TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD CASINO BOSS GAMBLER & CO. GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER DON’T STAND TOO CLOSE TO THE FIRE YOU’LL BURN YOUR FINGERS WHILE YOU’RE FULFILLING YOUR EVERY DESIRE LUCK IS A STRANGER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS A KNIFE

10 GREEN LIGHT MEANS DANGER RED LIGHT MEANS YOU’D BETTER RUN

GAMBLER YOU’D BETTER RUN

CASINO BOSS YOU’D BETTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

CASINO BOSS So, we have nothing to tempt you?

GAMBLER Sorry.

CASINO BOSS (to the GAMBLER) Well, if there is anything I can ever do.

GAMBLER It’s been a pleasure meeting you.

Before the GAMBLER can turn to leave, the CASINO BOSS pulls out his mobile phone.

CASINO BOSS Oh, let me call a taxi… compliments of the house. (to the audience) And you, don’t look so smug, you haven’t won yet.

The voice of Maurice, the M.C. interrupts over the P.A. system.

MAURICE Ladies and gentlemen, the Peking Palace Showgirls!

Intro to LOVE IN THE THIRD DEGREE

SCENE TWO THE PEKING PALACE CELEBRITY SHOWROOM

As the SHOW GIRLS fill the stage, the CASINO BOSS, grins, replaces his mobile and escorts the GAMBLER to a private booth, seats him and orders champagne. In the course of the song the GAMBLER’S attention is drawn to one particular girl – the SHOWGIRL.

GAMBLER I just can’t take my eyes off of her.

CASINO BOSS She’s one of our best. A star in the making.

The movements of the other SHOW GIRLS slow to eventual freeze as the music elides into LIMELIGHT. Lights focus on the SHOWGIRL who has stepped out of reality to sing. The moment is surreal. Lights shine eventually only on the SHOWGIRL and GAMBLER.

The SHOWGIRLS exit.

(Music cue: oriental bells)

CASINO BOSS It’s a shame you can’t stay. I would have introduced you to her.

GAMBLER Well, maybe I don’t have to leave just now…

CASINO BOSS Oh… fantastic (to the audience) Now here’s where the fun really starts. (to the GAMBLER, seriously) I will warn you, though, she’s only interested in winners. Big winners.

SCENE THREE THE LADIES DRESSING ROOM, BACKSTAGE AT THE PEKING PALACE

We see the SHOWGIRL’S dressing booth down stage and the other girls’ booths fading into the distance. The other girls are dressing in oriental costumes and heading for the stage. The COUNTESS, an elderly well dressed woman, sits pensively staring into the dressing table mirror. The dancers enter and start changing out of their costumes and into their street clothes. The SHOWGIRL approaches her booth and the COUNTESS sees her.

(Music cue: high strings)

COUNTESS .

They embrace.

SHOWGIRL I didn’t see you in the audience.

COUNTESS I sneaked in. You were wonderful tonight.

SHOWGIRL I want to be so much more.

COUNTESS You must be patient my dear.

SHOWGIRL When will it be my turn?

16 COUNTESS Soon, but only when the time is right. For me it was once so near.

SHOWGIRL Sometimes I think you believe in me more than I believe in myself.

COUNTESS Looking at you I see myself as I used to be. Full of promise… . Now come along my dear, if we’re late for dinner, we’ll miss the midnight service.

SHOWGIRL It will take me a moment.

COUNTESS I’ll wait for you in the foyer.

The Countess exits. In another part of the backstage dressing area the CASINO BOSS enters with the GAMBLER who is embarrassed at sight of the SHOW GIRLS changing costumes.

CASINO BOSS You wait here.

As the CASINO BOSS walks away the GAMBLER is then cornered by MAURICE

MAURICE Did you see the performance tonight? They sang like dogs and they danced like camels. Philistines, they don’t know a crescendo from a diminuendo. Of course I trained at La Scala, Milan, not like this untalented bunch of children.

MAURICE turns to go then turns back to the GAMBLER.

MAURICE And would you call that dancing? They have no idea who Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire were. Grace, light-of-foot. Naturally, I took master classes with Balanchine. No… working with this troupe is like directing a herd of cats.

The CASINO BOSS is in conversation with the SHOWGIRL.

SHOWGIRL .. from Columbia Pictures? (scoffing) Uh-huh. I’m sorry, but I’m running late.

CASINO BOSS Okay. I’ll tell him you don’t have time.

The SHOWGIRL looks over in the direction of the GAMBLER. Their eyes meet for a moment.

SHOWGIRL No wait. I’ll meet him.

GIGI, a female impersonator, still in full costume eyes up the GAMBLER.

GIGI (Aside to MAURICE) He’s a bit young for you isn’t he, Maurice?

17 MAURICE Brutissima.

MAURICE storms off. GIGI turns to the GAMBLER.

GIGI He snores horribly.

MAURICE returns holding his overcoat and hat.

MAURICE Gigi, come on let’s get a bite. I’ll get the car.

GIGI I’ll be with you in a moment Casanova.

MAURICE exits as GIGI puts his hand on the GAMBLER’S arm and blows him an overly exaggerated kiss. The GAMBLER is stupefied. GIGI exits as the SHOWGIRL comes over to the GAMBLER.

(Music cue: strings)

GAMBLER I really enjoyed your performance. Is there somewhere we can talk?

The SHOWGIRL gestures to the GAMBLER and as they move down stage, the lights change and the dressing room fades away behind them. They are in their own world.

GAMBLER Are you hungry?

SHOWGIRL Starving, but I’ve already got a dinner date and I can’t break it.

GAMBLER (Disappointed) I understand.

SHOWGIRL I’m dining with a friend, then she and I are going to the cathedral. We could meet tomorrow.

GAMBLER I’m leaving tomorrow.

The GAMBLER dejectedly turns to leave.

SHOWGIRL Meet me later, outside the restaurant Chez Paul.

GAMBLER Are you sure?

SHOWGIRL Yes.

The COUNTESS has returned unseen by the SHOWGIRL and the GAMBLER.

COUNTESS Come my dear. We are late.
