SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA June 30, 2019 Liturgical Life Liturgical Calendar The calendar used for the celebration of our liturgies is known as the —General because it applies to the Universal Church and Roman, because there are other Rites in the Catholic Church other than the Roman Rite, and they have their own calendars. The current calendar was revised following the Second Vatican Council; the Extraordinary Form of the Mass uses the previous calendar. A hierarchy of feasts guides the liturgical celebrations, with their rank indicating the relative importance of each feast in the life of the Church and special elements in the liturgical observance:  Octave—the highest rank of feast are the Octaves of Christmas and Easter, which treat the 8 days as part of one continuing feast.  Solemnity—all Sundays are of this rank, as well as Solemnities of the Lord and a few other special feasts. Most recently the Solemnities of the Nativity of John the Baptist, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Peter & Paul were celebrated. The Gloria and Creed are used in these Masses indicating the feast’s importance; some have separate vigil Masses with their separate readings.  Feast—certain feasts of the Lord, as well as Apostles, Evangelists, and others.  Obligatory Memorial—this is for a saint of universal significance.  Optional Memorial—this is for a saint of more limited or regional import.  Week days—of Advent, Christmas, Easter, & Ordinary Time.
