Puddle Frog Quilt Puddle Frog Pillows 1 Flower Wreath Quilt Coral Flower Wreath Quilt Yellow Flower Wreath Pillows Lazy Gardener’s Quilt Puddle Frog Quilt Puddle Frog Pillows 1 Puddle Frog Quilt What a fun quilt this is, filled with adorable little frogs that children and all those young at heart are sure to love. The fabrics are from the Gardenlife and Chambray collections, with a single-colour background to show off the frogs. To make you really frog happy, instructions are available for three matching pillows, each on a different background colour – see tildasworld.com for the instructions. Where fat eighths are given, a long ⅛yd is not suitable as it isn’t deep enough. Note that the Luna fabric used for the backing is 108in (274cm) wide. Finished Size 62½in x 74¾in (158.8cm x 189.9cm) General Notes • Fabric quantities are based on a usable width of 42in (107cm), unless otherwise stated. • Measurements are in imperial inches with metric conversions in brackets – use only one system throughout (preferably inches). • Width measurements are generally given first. • Press all fabrics before cutting. • Use ¼in (6mm) seams unless otherwise instructed. • Read all the instructions through before you start. Quilt Layout 1 The quilt uses a frog block in twenty different colourways, arranged in five staggered columns. A smaller block showing just the frog’s head, fills in at the top and bottom of the columns. Sashing strips are used to separate the blocks and at the sides of the quilt. See Fig A for the fabrics used and Fig B for the quilt layout. Fig A Fabric swatches (Puddle Frog Quilt) 3 Fig B Quilt layout (Puddle Frog Quilt) Cutting Out 2 Cut the strips for the sashing pieces first from Fabric 21 (Chambray teal), cutting the following strip sizes. (Reserve all spare fabric for pieces needed in the blocks.) 4 • Sashing A (horizontal pieces between the blocks) – cut thirty pieces 12½in x 2in (31.8cm x 5.1cm). • Sashing B (horizontal pieces above/below the frog head blocks) – cut five pieces 12½in x 3½in (31.8cm x 9cm). • Sashing C (vertical strips at the sides of the quilt) – cut four strips 1½in (3.8cm) x width of fabric. Sew the strips together into two pairs and press seams open. Now cut each pair down to 74¾in (190cm) long. You could wait until the quilt has been assembled before cutting these lengths, in case your quilt measurements differ from ours. 3 Fig C gives the measurements of the cut pieces needed for the blocks, so follow these measurements carefully as you cut the fabric pieces. Fig D shows the positions of the fabrics. 4 Cut the backing fabric into a piece about 70in x 83in (178cm x 211cm). 5 Cut the binding fabric into eight strips 2½in (6.4cm) x width of fabric. Sew them together end to end and press seams open. Press in half along the length, wrong sides together. Fig C Layout and cutting for the blocks Sizes include seam allowances All pieces to be cut initially as squares or rectangles 5 Fig D Block colourways Numbers identify the fabrics used (see Fig A) Blocks are identified by red numbers in circles See instruction text for numbers of blocks to make Making a Frog Block 6 There are thirty whole frog blocks in total: some blocks occur only once, while others are used twice. 6 Make two of Frog 1, Frog 2, Frog 3, Frog 5, Frog 6, Frog 9, Frog 10, Frog 15, Frog 16 and Frog 17. Make one of Frog 4, Frog 7, Frog 8, Frog 11, Frog 12, Frog 13, Frog 14, Frog 18, Frog 19 and Frog 20. 7 We will make one whole Frog block first, using the Frog 1 block as an example. The block uses corner triangle units in various places to create sharp corners. These are all made using the same technique but changing the fabrics used and the sizes as needed. Fig E shows the process in detail for the eyes. Take a print piece (c) and place it right side up. Take two background fabric squares (d) and pencil mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the small squares. Place the squares right sides together with the print square, aligning them in the top two corners and with the marked lines in the directions shown in Fig E. Sew along the marked lines. Trim off excess fabric ¼in (6mm) outside the sewn lines and then press the triangles outwards. Check the unit is 2in x 1¼in (5.1cm x 3.2cm). Make another unit like this. Fig E Making corner square triangles 8 Using the same technique, create corner triangles on piece e and piece g, using the f squares of background fabric. Now sew the head unit together as shown in Fig F and press the seams. Fig F Making the head unit 9 To make the body, sew the pieces together (i/h/i) as shown in Fig G. Now, using the same corner triangle technique add the f pieces – note that these triangles are formed over more than one fabric piece. Fig G Making the body unit 7 10 To make the legs, create corner triangles on the print square (j), using the background squares (f), positioning them as shown in Fig H 1. Add the rectangle (a) to the top. Make the other leg the same way but position the f squares as in Fig H 2. Fig H Making the leg units 11 To assemble the block, take all the units you have made and sew them together, following the stages in Fig I. Once sewn, check the block is 12½in x 10¼in (31.8cm x 26cm). Fig I Assembling the Frog block 12 Continue on in this way to make the rest of the Frog blocks, following Fig C to choose the correct fabrics for each colourway. Making a Frog Head Block 13 These blocks are smaller in height and are used to fill in at the top or bottom of a column. There are five Frog Head blocks needed, one each of Frog Head 1A, 4A, 7A, 8A and 13A. 14 These blocks use the same sizes of head pieces as the whole frog (b, c, d, e, f and g). The side pieces (a) are smaller. Follow Fig C for the cut sizes and Fig D for the fabrics to use. 15 Make a Frog Head block in the same way as the whole frog and then assemble the block as shown in Fig J. Check the block is 12½in x 4¼in (31.8cm x 10.8cm). Fig J Assembling the Frog Head block 8 Assembling the Quilt 16 When all of the blocks are made, assemble the quilt into five columns. Fig K shows the sewing order of the first two columns, with the placement of the Sashing A and Sashing B pieces. Follow Fig B for the order of the remaining columns. Note that the smaller Frog Head blocks at the top of the quilt are positioned upside down. Press seams in one direction. Fig K Sewing columns 1 and 2 9 17 When all of the columns are sewn, sew them together. Finally, add the Sashing C pieces to the sides of the quilt, checking the length of your quilt first, to make sure your measurements are the same as ours. 18 To finish the quilt top, embroider the eyes on the frogs (Fig L), using six strands of black stranded cotton and working French knots with the yarn wrapped twice around the needle.
