On the cover: Ann and David Hicks LETTER FROM PRESIDENT JOHN A. DELANEY

Those of us who study and work each day at UNF are truly grateful to you for believing so wholeheartedly in our mission and vision.

The theme for this year’s Endowment Report is Foundation for the Future. Last year at this time, we were wrapping up The Power of Transformation campaign, the most ambitious capital campaign in the history of the University of North Florida and one in which we surpassed our $110 million goal by about $20 million – raising $130 million to build a solid foundation for the future of UNF. Part of that foundation is helping to fund study-abroad trips, some of which you will read about in this report. Our students study abroad at twice the national average, giving UNF students a distinct advantage in the global job market after graduation. They are world citizens who know how to communicate and navigate abroad, giving them a huge lead over their counterparts from other schools. They are also gaining valuable Transformational Learning Opportunities opportunities abroad, but you will also learn about the people who have while abroad, one of the hallmarks of a UNF education. She credits that UNF education and her years of international travel as being major factors in expanding her worldviews. That’s why she decided to offer the experience of foreign travel to students who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity. “My own travels have been some of the most liberating and life- expanding experiences of my life,” Hicks said. “Between getting a degree and engaging in the classroom setting, traveling to a foreign country is one of the most informative experiences a student can have. 54 55 A Donor Bill of Rights Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

I To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes. II To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. III To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements. IV To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given. V To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition. VI To be assured information about donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent of the law. VII To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature. VIII To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors. IX To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share. X To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
