Praxis of Lust: Alternative Sexual Culture in Personal Narratives of Queer Disabled Sex by Caroline Emily Jackson Under the Direction of Susan Talburt, PhD A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences Georgia State University 2021 ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on emotions to analyze personal narratives of queer disabled sex to understand how queer disabled people talk about sex with the goal of identifying their constructions of their sexualities and sexual practices. By analyzing how the role of discourses on disability affect how these narrators and their partners feel about disabled sex, this thesis explores how sex can be used to combat negative emotions fueled by dominant ableist discourses that cause shame and self-disgust. -

Walton, Ed.D. Introduction : Over a decade ago, Eddie Glenn called attention to the disparate treatment of African American women with disabilities, suggesting that a triple jeopardy syndrome puts them at a further disadvantage because they are victims of race, gender, and disability bias in our society. Her research explored what it means to be an African American and live with a disability. She also found that African American women with disabilities contribute disproportionately to the population of under educated American women and are least likely to have a high school diploma, do not vigorously participate in the labor force because of the severity of the disability, and are least likely to be married or living in a family arrangement. The impact of triple jeopardy, she found, is observed in several aspects of the lives of African American women with disabilities, including support and family relationships, education, participation in the rehabilitation process, and employment and income (Glenn, 1992). The 1980s saw a flurry of interest in women with physical disabilities (for example, amputees, paraplegics, quadriplegics), but little attention was devoted to the subject in the 1990s, (Danek, 1992). Today, even though a body of literature exists that examines and criticizes rehabilitation services for African Americans with disabilities, there remains a scarcity of literature dedicated to examining the lived experiences of African American women with disabilities, particularly related to self-esteem, self-efficacy and sexual identity. -

However, less attention is paid to the sexuality of people diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. This narrative review summarises what is currently known about the level of sexual health knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities. A literature review was conducted of the published literature using Google Scholar, PubMed, PsychInfo, EBSCOhost, and Science Direct. Forty eight articles were identified that addressed the question about the level of sexual health knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities. Overall, studies demonstrate that people with intellectual disabilities are highly variable in levels of sexual knowledge, but on average have a range of deficits in knowledge compared to non-disabled individuals. More tailored education and support in accessing formal and informal sources of information are needed. Quint, MD KEYWORDS Sexuality Disability Adolescent Sexuality education KEY POINTS Sexuality is a topic that may be neglected in adolescents with disabilities, despite evi- dence that their needs are often similar to or greater than those of their typically devel- oping peers. Several hormonal treatment options are available to assist with menstrual management and provide contraception. Medical providers may facilitate healthy sexual development in adolescents with disabil- ities by initiating conversations with patients and caregivers about sexuality. INTRODUCTION When caring for adolescents, providers may feel ill equipped to address issues of sexuality. In part, this may reflect the tendency to equate “sexuality” with “sexual in- tercourse.” Sexual development is a multidimensional process that spans childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Young children explore gender expression, discover body parts, and learn to respect others’ personal space. Children of all ages witness and process the sexual images and relationships seen in their environment. Adoles- cents undergo the changes of puberty, experience sexual feelings and desires, and develop the capacity for intimacy and reproduction. The process sometimes proves challenging for adolescents and their caregivers, but it ultimately contributes greatly to the adolescent’s sense of self, as well as providing a source of pleasure, bonding, and enhancement of human relationships.1 Approximately 10% of youth in the United States report a physical, developmental, or sensory disability.2 The global prevalence of intellectual disability (ID), defined as IQ less than 70 to 75, is estimated at 1%, with most being in the mild range.3 Children and The authors have no commercial/financial relationships to disclose. -

IN FOCUS: Cripping Cinema and Media Studies Introduction by ROBERT MCRUER, editor n 1985, the historian Paul Longmore identifi ed the conver- gence of disability and media as one long process of “screening stereotypes.”1 Attentive to the ways disabled people were con- sistently represented in fi lm, in particular, as either angry and evil villains or inspirational fi gures for able-bodied characters and Iviewers, Longmore initiated what might be understood as a “crip” tradition of critiquing, from within disability culture, the impover- ished representations that dominant fi lmic and media forms have bequeathed us. Disabled villains like Captain Hook or Magneto are generally defeated and eliminated at fi lm’s end, whereas inspirational fi gures tend either to “overcome” their disability or to end up dead after dutifully changing for the better the lives of everyone around them. Neither fi lmic tendency, of course, could off er more than a two-dimensional engagement with disability, although Longmore did note the promise for a more textured engagement with disability that attended other visual forms, including television and even advertising. Crip theory has emerged over the past few decades as a critical project, closely allied with queer theory, that centers atypical bod- ies, minds, and behaviors while interrogating that which can never be contained or described neatly by an entirely historical and limited abled-disabled binary. As a noun or adjective, “crip” is of course a fl amboyant reclamation, one that disabled activists, artists, and theorists have long used to signify solidarity and resistance far in excess of the mobility impairment seemingly invoked by stigma- tizing and pitying uses of “cripple.”2 As a verb, as I have suggested 1 Paul Longmore, “Screening Stereotypes: Images of Disabled People,” Social Policy 16 (Summer 1985): 31.
