A warm welcome...

On behalf of Heacham FC we would like to welcome Gorleston Reserves FC to Heacham. This is only the second time we have met, the last was a couple of seasons ago in the County cup which we sadly lost on penalties. With that said they were a great bunch of lads and supporters. Would like to wish our coaching staff and players all the best with our new venture into senior football. I would like to thank our vice president Hannah Rawlings for her match day sponsorship and Heacham FC supporters Club our match ball sponsor. Onwards and upwards David Page - Heacham FC Chairman.

From The Manager...

Good afternoon and welcome to Heacham FC for this league encounter against Gorleston Reserves. We are expecting a tough match as we know they were up there in second when Covid hit last season, but my lads will be up for it. We last met in the Norfolk Junior Cup Semi-final a couple of years back and we were disappointed not to have won the match, so there’s a bit of payback on the cards for us as well. After a great opening league win last week the lads will be buzzing for this game and no doubt there will be a good crowd supporting them as well. I wish both sets of players the best of luck. David Griggs - Manager

A Few Lines On Our Opponents...

The club was established on 27 September 1887 by members of Gorleston Cricket Club looking for a winter pastime, and were initially nicknamed the "Cards", playing in crimson shirts and blue shorts. Their first competitive match was a game against Beccles Caxton in the Senior Cup (at the time, Gorleston was still in Suffolk), losing 1–0. In 1900 they joined the Aldred League, in 1903 the club began playing in green shirts and white shorts and in 1905–06 they were League champions, winning 15 of their 16 matches. In 1906–07 they won the Norfolk Junior Cup. At the end of the season the Aldred League became the Yar- mouth & District League; the club went on to win the league in its first season under the new name, winning all fourteen matches. At the end of the season they joined the Norfolk & Suffolk League. Gorleston won the Norfolk & Suffolk League in 1920–21. They were runners-up in the next 3 sea- sons, also winning the Norfolk Senior Cup in 1921–22 and 1922–23. In 1925–26 they did the dou- ble, winning the league and the Senior Cup. After finishing as runners-up in 1927–28 and 1928– 29 and winning the Senior Cup again in 1927–28, they won the league for a third time in 1929–30. They were runners-up and Senior Cup winners in 1930–31, and went on to win four consecutive league titles between 1931–32 and 1934–35. They also won the East Anglian Cup in 1931–32 and the Senior Cup in 1932–33. In 1935 Gorleston were founder members of the Eastern Counties League. Their final trophy be- fore World War II was the Senior Cup in 1937–38, beating local rivals Great Yarmouth Town 3–0. After the war, the club won the Senior Cup again in 1951. In 1951–52 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, and were drawn against Leyton Orient. After a 2–2 draw at Brisbane Road and a 0–0 draw at the Recreation Ground (at which the club's record attendance of 4,473 was set), a second replay was held at Arsenal's Highbury Stadium, resulting in a 5–4 win for Leyton Orient, with Gorleston having been 4–1 down at one point in the match. In 1952–53 Gorleston won both the league and Senior Cup. In 1955–56 they won the League Cup, beating Tottenham 'A' 2–1 in the final. They reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1957–58, but lost 10–1 at Gillingham. The late 1950s saw a decline in the club's fortunes; they finished bottom of the league in 1956–57, and after finishing second-from-bottom in 1959–60, financial problems forced them to drop back into the Norfolk & Suffolk League. In 1964 the league merged with the East Anglian League to form the Anglian Combination, with the club placed in Section A. After winning both the Anglian Combination and the Senior Cup in 1968–69, the club returned to the Eastern Counties League. Gorleston won the Eastern Counties League for a second time in 1972–73. A twelfth Senior Cup victory was achieved in 1977–78, and the club won back-to-back league titles in 1979–80 and 1980–81. In 1982–83 the club won another East Anglian Cup with a victory over Bishop's Stort- ford. The following year they won the Senior Cup again. In 1988 the Eastern Counties League gained a second division, with Gorleston becoming members of the Premier Division. They were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1993–94 season, but club returned to the Premier Divi- sion as Division One champions in 1995–96. Gorleston won the Senior Cup for a fourteenth time in 2000–01 with a 4–0 win over Great Yar- mouth, before the club was relegated again at the end of the 2004–05 season. In 2010–11 they won the Division One Knockout Cup and the Division One title, earning promotion back to the Premier Division. The club won the Senior Cup in 2012, beating Thetford Town 2–0 in the final, and again in 2014 with a 1–0 win over Wroxham. Our Players & Sponsors... Our Players & Sponsors... Match Report v Bungay Town

Bungay Town 1 v 7 Heacham Saturday 5th September 2020 - Anglian Combination Division One Heacham kicked off their first ever season in senior football in fine style with a convincing away win at Bungay Town. With the game starting at a fast pace, it took time for the game to settle and for Heacham to find their rhythm. It took a pinpoint set piece from Brad Key to find skipper Ed Tann (pictured) who made no mistake with a bullet header to put Heacham into the lead. Heacham then began to create more chances and when John Flannagan regained the ball high up the pitch and passed to Nathan Davies, who managed to slot it home, which was no more than we deserved. The quality of Brad key was shown again when he slotted a ball through to Nathan Davis again, as another set piece was fired home by John Flannagan this time, to put us 3-0 up at Half time. The second half saw continuous Heacham dominance, with some excellent football and work from all. Another pinpoint Brad Key corner was again headed in by Skipper Ed Tann to make it 4-0. Heacham were now creating chance after chance and John Flannagan scored an excellent second goal to make it 5-0. Nathan Davies (pictured) grabbed his second with a cool finish after a good bit of work from Ben Oliver and Nathan Daw. Bungay scored a late consolation but Heacham still managed a 7th with MoM John Flannagan scoring a great solo goal to complete his hattrick and to get the clubs first win at senior level football. Well done to all on a great display. D C M SERVICES PROPERTY MAINTENANCE SERVICES

Well it was great to get back to playing competitive football again in the Anglian Combination Division One 2020/21 season. With a few teams having good pre-seasons it will be a very competitive league this season with clubs already showing they will be challenging for promotion come next May. Lets start our look at last Saturday at Aylsham who started the season in style beating last season’s title challenges Wymondham Town by 7 goals to nil. Fletcher Dyson notched a brace, with one apiece for Matt Brett, Barney Dickerson, Aedan Oliver, James Oliver and substitute Sam Bryant. Wymondham will be disappointed having a similar squad to last season, albeit a different Manager.

When go to Bungay Town who welcomed newly promoted Heacham to Ditchingham, Heacham showed they will certainly a team to watch in their first season in Senior Football with a fine 7-1 away win. John Flanagan started the season of fire scoring a hat-trick with Nathan Davies also getting a brace as did Edward Tann, Shane Smith scored the consolation for Bungay Town. In another high scoring match a young Fakenham Town Reserve team welcomed a strong Yelverton side and although matching their opponents for long periods of the match could not prevent a 5-2 defeat. Chris Hall scored a hat-trick for the visitors with Harvey Kerrigan and James Melton also getting on the scoresheet for Yelverton, The Ghosts goals coming from Harry Exley and George Whitmore.

Gorleston Reserves had to settle for a draw against a hard working Watton United at Woodfarm, Gorleston. Sam Ellis scoring for the home team and Cameron Hudson scoring for Watton United. Easton made the trip to Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves and will have been delighted to return home with all three points after winning 2-1. George Crow and substitute Adam Brown scored for Easton with Louis Tillett scoring for the young Kirkley team. Norwich United U21s entertained East Harling and in a game of few chances for both teams it was East Harling who took the points with a solitary goal from substitute Shaun Hunsdon late on. Stalham Town welcomed Attleborough Town and had to settle for a share of the spoils as the game finished 1-1, with both teams having chances to take all three points, but it was not to be. Ex Harleston striker Lawrence Cheese scored for Stalham and Jak Fuller for the ‘Boro’. In the last match in the league we go to Euston Park where Thetford Rovers welcomed Sprowston Athletic. In a hard fought match it was the visitors that took the points with a 2-1 win. Jordan Crane and Benjamin Moon scored for the away team with Ryan Skipp notching for ‘The Rovers’. Football Trivia - Oh To Be A Referee!...

I think that it would be fair to say that referees never always get it right but back in January 2000 Referee Rob Harris got it very wrong. It was a 4th Round FA Cup tie between Tranmere Rovers and Sunderland at Prenton Park which had a lively last few seconds. Tranmere's Clint Hall was sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence but during the ensuing on-pitch confrontation a Tranmere sub, Stephen Frail, was sent on unnoticed by the officials. Until the error was noticed - resulting in another confrontation - Tranmere played with a full team, much to the displeasure of Sunderland who lost the match 1-0. Sunderland manager Peter Reid said 'It was like Billy Smart's circus out there. I don't like talking about officials instead of football - but someone has made a major error.' The Wearsiders lost an appeal to have the match replayed but for the first time match officials were brought before an FA Commission to examine their actions. Ref Harris, assistant ref Tony Green and fourth official David Unsworth were all said to have 'less than proficiently applied the laws of the game' with Harris being given a ban as a result.

During last season a Referee actually kicked a player before sending him off, yes that is right!!!! and amazingly it was in a French Ligue 1 game between Nantes and Paris St Germain. Ref Tony Chapron had been knocked to the ground after an accidental collision with Nantes defender Diego Carlos and he then then kicked the player and sent him off after giving him a second yellow card. The Referee was later banned for six months, half of which was suspended. He got away with it lightly I would have thought!

Probably couldn't think of anything more sedate to do as the grey hairs take over - walking football. Similar rules as the normal football but for the over 50s and played at a walking pace. But in January 2016 when Canterbury Walking Football Club played Herne Bay Walking Football Club - players were aged up to 70 - the outcome was a tad surprising. Within five seconds there was a 'robust' shoulder charge followed soon after by a 'crunching tackle' which was followed by a brawl which included the ref. The match was abandoned after just two minutes, proving that there is life after 50!.

On the 3rd April 1915, Oldham’s Billy Cook was sent off in the First Division match against Middlesbrough but refused to leave the pitch and so the referee abandoned the game. Cook received a 12-month ban. Can you recognise the player ?...
