WASH Cluster Nepal 4W - May 12th 2015 Please find following the analysis of the 4W data – May 12th Introduction (Round 2) This is the second round of the 4W analysis. As this is the second round and still early in the emergency response, many agencies are still planning their interventions and caseloads, hence much of the data is understandably incomplete. In the coming week/s we will receive far more comprehensive partner data and will be able to show realistic gaps. In addition, we are receiving better affected population data and there are many ongoing assessments, the results of which will help us to understand both the response data and the affected population data and enable us to deliver a far more profound analysis of the WASH response. Please assist us as we have a lot of information gaps in the data provided so far and hence the maps are not yet providing a true picture of the response. We would like to quickly move to VDC mapping including planned/reached beneficiaries. Eastern Region of Sindhupalchok District, Central Nepal
Study on the Bryofloral Diversity, Their Current Status and Conservation Issues in Central and South- eastern Region of Sindhupalchok District, Central Nepal Final Report Submitted to Rufford Small Grant Foundation, U.K. Nirmala Pradhan Kathmandu Nepal February, 2015 Summary First and Second Rufford Small Grant Programs (Ref. Id: 10.09.07 and ID: 10111-2) were implemented at the northern parts of Sindhupalchok district of central Nepal within the elevation range of 1400 – 4000 m which were highly successful to bring a long list of diverse species of bryophytes of the midland and highland areas. These two studies covered the elevation of 1400 to 4000 m where different habitat types were noted and 16 new records of this plant were also made that updated the country’s overall list. Tourism prospect in northern parts of this district was also assessed in these studies. The current study under the Booster Grant (ID:12663-B) was to give continuity to the previous works so was emphasized mostly to unexplored vast areas of the south, east and central parts of this district. This study came up with many interesting findings which revealed out a list of 160 species of bryophytes categorized into 13 orders, 42 families and 75 genera. All the three classes of Bryophytes were represented in this study with new records of 22 species. Rich diversity of the newly recorded species has been noticed at 800 -1400 m of elevations. Of them 14 species belonged to the class Hepaticae and rest 8 species to Musci. Of the recorded species, the class Anthocerotae represented 4 species, Hepaticae 61 and Musci 95 species.

Introduction
Chapter I Introduction 1.1 Background IDD is the world’s single most significant cause of preventable brain damage and mental retardation. Twenty nine percent of the population (1570 million people) is at risk of iodine deficiency today in the world. The immense danger to health due to IDD arises from the fact that these disorders can began even before the child is born. Although iodine is needed in small amount on an average of 150mcg (100 to 300) per person per day, 1, 2 lack of iodine is associated with wide range of clinical and sub- clinical conditions. The most obvious sign of IDD is goiter, which is a gross enlargement of the thyroid gland in the neck, with a global prevalence of 12%. In addition to goiter, IDD leads to infant mortality, stillbirths, birth complications, mental retardation and depressed psychomotor functions. Moderate IDD in early childhood has been estimated to lower the intelligence quotient by about 10-15 points, while in adults it causes lethargy. 3 IDD is an important major micronutrient deficiency problem in Nepal. In some isolated mountainous area of Nepal, most of the adult woman had goiter and up to 10% of population were cretins, the severest form of IDD. 4 First nation wide clinical prevalence survey for goiter conducted in 1956 -1967 showed high prevalence of endemic goiter and cretinism. IDD prevalence survey conducted in high Trisuli and upper Langtang area during 1976-1977 revealed that the total goiter rate was 55.3%, while cretinism was 5.1%. 4 Similar survey conducted in 1979-1982 in 14 districts, the total goiter rate noted was 57.6% and cretinism prevalence was 2.8%.

Background and Purpose 1.1. Background of the Project On 25th April 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred and its epicentre was in the Gorkha District which is approximately 77km northwest of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Due to several aftershocks, devastating damage was recorded. The total number of deaths was 8,702, the number of injuries was 22,303; there were approximately 500,000 totally collapsed houses and 260,000 partially collapsed houses. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) dispatched a fact finding mission to Nepal from the 1st of May to conduct a needs assessment related to rehabilitation and reconstruction and to develop the contents of urgent projects.
