It is my sincere pleasure to extend greetings on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, to everyone gathered to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Hindu Society of Saskatchewan.

I wish to thank the members of the Society for honouring the legacy of those who founded the Temple in Saskatoon in 1985. It is wonderful that members of Saskatoon’s Hindu community have a place to gather and to share rich spiritual traditions. Thank you, as well, for your many contributions to the larger community, and for cultivating understanding and respect among our diverse population.

Please accept my congratulations and best wishes as you mark this important milestone in your history. My wife Donna and I look forward to joining you at special events in the coming years.

Russ Mirasty Lieutenant Governor Province of Saskatchewan Hindu Society of Saskatchewan’s 35th Annual Vegetarian Banquet

On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, I am pleased to welcome you to the Hindu Society of Saskatchewan’s 35th Annual Vegetarian Banquet held at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon. This festive event shares the sights, sounds and flavours of Indian vegetarian cuisine with the City of Saskatoon. It provides a time to celebrate achievements, as well as an opportunity to appreciate the many and varied contributions made by the Hindu Community to the province of Saskatchewan. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of Saskatoon’s Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple – a significant milestone for the first Hindu Temple built in Western Canada. Events such as this contribute significantly toward building bridges of understanding in our diverse, multi-ethnic society. I wish to thank everyone involved for all your hard work in preparing this exceptional banquet. Best wishes for a memorable evening.

Sincerely,

Scott Moe Premier City of Saskatoon

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to this celebration for the 35th Annual Vegetarian Banquet in Saskatoon. It is a great privilege to congratulate everyone - past and present - who has helped to achieve such a remarkable milestone. Getting to this day was made possible due to both the vision and work of those thirty-five years ago and the continued dedication of those in the Hindu community today. Being able to celebrate such an anniversary is a significant accomplishment, and my sincerest congratulations on achieving this milestone. The Hindu Society of Saskatchewan has such a proud history here in Saskatoon, and its members have contributed and continue to add to the community in important and meaningful way. This is something that we are all grateful for because the diversity of our community adds to our collective strength. I wish everyone the best as you gather for this celebration, and I wish you all of the best in the future.

Leela Sharma & Mythili Venkatraman Hindu Society of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK Since the 1950s, students from India have been coming to the University of Saskatchewan for higher studies. In the following years, the university began seeking academicians from India to serve as faculty members. By 1960s, a small Indian community was starting to take root in Saskatoon. and began to gather for worship and celebrate Hindu festivals at each others homes. Out of this humble beginning, Swami Bhashyananda, a Senior Monk from the Vedanta Society, Chicago, visited Saskatoon in 1972, who inspired community members to build a temple for worship. Working toward this goal, the community members incorporated the Vedanta Society of Saskatchewan on June 28th, 1977, and established a formal administrative body. In 1981, the society purchased an old church building on 5th Street East, renovated the building to meet the temple requirements and started hosting regular weekly prayer services. After moving to this building, the services became more structured. A book of prayers and hymns was compiled to accommodate different worship methods being practised in different parts of India. Within couple of years, the budding Hindu community in Saskatoon began to exceed what the old church could accommodate and demanded the need for a larger facility to continue with the weekly services. The society then decided to build a new temple and purchased a suitable lot on La Ronge Road in Saskatoon. Donations contributed by the community members and proceeds from sale of the existing building made up the down payment for mortgage of the new Temple. What is the meaning of namaste?

Namaste is the greeting with folded hands that means: l bow to you. My prostrations and salutations to the Divine in you. In doing so, I recognize the oneness between us. Since the 1950s, students from India have been coming to the University of Saskatchewan for higher studies. Within couple of years, the budding Hindu community in Saskatoon began to exceed what the old church could accommodate and demanded the need for a larger facility to continue with the weekly services. The society then decided to build a new temple and purchased a suitable lot on La Ronge Road in Saskatoon. Since the 1950s, students from India have been coming to the University of Saskatchewan for higher studies. What is the meaning of namaste?

Namaste is the greeting with folded hands that means: l bow to you. My prostrations and salutations to the Divine in you. In doing so, I recognize the oneness between us. Seva: The Art of Selfless Service Amit Dhawan (Vice President of Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple)

Seva is a Sanskrit word that describes the act of selfless service or a simple desire to help others. Selfless service is an important concept in Hinduism, the act of seva leads to collective benefit and gain, although it is performed without regard for the outcome of the individual. The sacred Hindu text, the Bhagavad Gita, encourages selfless service as a way to develop spiritually; therefore, it is very closely linked to the concept of Karma yoga. This can be considered a devotional practice because by serving others, you are serving God. The Seva can be a powerful tool for people to learn more about themselves, their personalities and the patterns of behavior or thought that are no longer serving them. Therefore, performing Seva can be a form of personal and spiritual development as well. Seva should be done with no expectation of reward or even acknowledgment of the work that is done. We do Seva using our physical body this way our mind gets to live in a place where there is no ego, only love for the Lord. Seva may be performed by a person in any number of ways, the individual will perform selfless service in order to further the work of their guru and their community or their family for the benefit of others. If you are helping to mentor a sister or brother, that is family seva. If you adopt a pet from the shelter, that is pet seva. Anytime you willingly donate your time and love to help others, you are doing seva The dedicated Seva serves two purposes, one is to nurtures the love for the Lord. This love can help in her/his spiritual journey. Second, Seva contributes to the development of a community by brining it together. Seva done with a true love for Lord can inspire others to do the same. Our Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple Madan M. Gupta (The Founding President of Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple, 1983 - 1985, Saskatoon) “ॐ भूभुवः ः त वतुव रें भग देव धीमिह धयो यो नः चोदयात् ॥" (om bhūr bhuvah svah tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayāt)

The first Hindu Temple was established in Saskatoon in 1982 by the Vedanta Society of Saskatchewan, which was formed by the Indian community with the blessings of Swami Bhashya Nanda of Vedanta Society, Chicago. An old church building was acquired on the corner of 5th street and Clearance Avenue, which became the first worship place for the Hindu Community in Saskatchewan. In February 1983, Dr. Madan Gupta was appointed as the President and Mrs. Pari Padmanabh as the Vice-President of Vedanta Society of Saskatchewan. The first major function of Maha Ratri was celebrated in February 1983 with great devotion and pride. Shortly after this humble beginning, it was noted that the water was leaking from the roof and the building was in need of major repair work. A landmark decision was made by the board of Vedanta Society to build a new temple building. Therefore, the Church building was sold. A piece of vacant land on La Ronge Road was purchased and the foundation stone for the new temple was laid down for the construction of new temple on the day of Ram-Navami in 1984 (Vikram Samvat 2040). While the temple building was under construction, the regular Sunday worships were performed at the Field House on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan. The new temple construction was completed within one year. Some generous devotees donated a large sum of money for this construction. One of the devotees brought the of Lakshmi and Narayan from Jaipur, India personally. Finally, a dream became the reality and the new Lakshmi Narayan temple was inaugurated on Ram Navami, 1985 (Vikram Samvat 2041). In 1987, ‘Vedanta Society’ was given a new name as ‘Hindu Society of Saskatchewan’. Gradually over the coming years, the temple activities increased and as more people made Saskatoon as their home, it was realized that the temple building needed expansion. This led to the construction of the community hall, named as Gita Bhawan, adjacent to the temple building. This was a significant milestone in the evolution of the temple history. Gita Bhawan is now used for major temple functions celebration, yoga classes, classes on Hinduism and Hindi learning for children and family celebrations by the community members. Indeed, over the last three decades and half, this Lakshmi Narayan temple has helped in bringing the Saskatoon Hindu community together and it has nourished them spiritually. In addition, this Lakshmi Narayan temple has made significant positive contributions to the community at large in this beautiful city of Saskatoon. Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple : 35th Anniversary Veena Avinashi (Past president - 1989 - 1991, Past Chair of Trustees - 1996 - 1997)

35 years ago, the vision and dreams of many prominent members of the East Indian community in Saskatoon were realized in the Hindu Society of Saskatchewan’s solid foundation of the Shri Lakshmi Narayan Temple. What started many years ago continues to play a pivotal role in keeping the East Indian culture alive and thriving. The Temple is a Cultural Centre where people get together to pray, perform religious rites, celebrate festivals, host spiritual leaders, hold meetings, language classes and all functions relevant to preserve traditions and various aspects of our history. The Temple has provided a platform for maintaining important connections to India that have shaped the community’s rich heritage. It engages the younger generation through teaching of the native language, involvement in all festivals and community events. It provides opportunity for all generations to come together to welcome positivity and prosperity into their lives and share our dynamic culture and traditions with the community at large. With the growth of the physical premises, the Temple and Cultural Centre can cater to an increased number of devotees and additional programs and events. The Temple marks new beginnings of brotherhood and unity and is a symbol of prevailing goodwill and peace in our lives. The Hindu Community has always been, and continues to be, an important participant in enriching the mosaic of Canada. The Temple provides an epicenter for preserving, developing and sharing our rich heritage and also for catering to the aspirations of the old and young generations for years to come. Wishing all members continued growth, exciting developments and added milestones for the future. OUR TEMPLE AND IT’S ROLE Aruna (Annu) Thakur, Vancouver (Past Chair of Trustees, 1995 - 1996)

History of Hinduism: Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and was founded approximately for 4,500 years ago. The Rig Veda of ancient Hinduism is estimated to have been composed 3,700 years ago, making it one of the oldest known written religious texts that is actively used in religious practice to this day. Over centuries, Hindus have taken special pride in contributing to other areas of human endeavour, such as accomplishments in discipline of astronomy, the decimal number system in use today was first recorded in Indian mathematics. In 1893 Swami Vivekanand brought the message of Hinduism to the west by coming to the World Parliament of Religion, in Chicago. His address to the audience was well received. As a result people in the west especially religious scholars began to understand that Hinduism was not just theory of Gods or worshipping many Gods but also a complete system of spiritual consciousness. What is Hinduism? Hindu philosophy is based on the concept of self realization, which has infused in all of us from countless generations. We believe in TRUTH. Truth is eternal and Hindu pursues knowledge and understanding of the truth. Brahman is Truth and Reality. The Vedas are the ultimate authority. Individual souls are immortal. The goal of the individual soul is to reach Moksha. Is Hinduism a religion? One fundamental principal of the religion is the idea that people’s idea and thoughts directly determine their current and future lives. Hindus try to achieve Dharma, which is a code of living that emphasizes good conduct and morality. Why Hinduism worship many Gods? Hindus believe in the formless Absolute Reality as God and as a Creator. Hindus worship one Supreme Being called Brahman though in different names. Hindu Temple in Saskatoon: Early pioneers of Hindus arrived in Saskatoon in mid 60’s. By mid 70’s, the idea to build the Hindu Temple was conceived, which over next 50 years reached to the present stage of having a traditional Hindu Temple, including the new expansion – the Gita Bhawan. The Temple is serving as an institution to guide the new generations the important of Hinduism and its values and beliefs. In closing, I would like to thank Dr. Nawal Sharma, current members of the Board of Directors for allowing me to express my views for the Temple and its role. WHAT IS HINDUISM? Sunil Chaubal

As someone who has been involved and supported the Vedanta Society and later the Hindu Society of Saskatchewan, I am happy that we are celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the inception of Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Let us discover ourselves what is so unique about us that we can take in pride and act as a beacon of peace for the world. The first thing that comes to my mind is “freedom of mind”. This fundamental truth gives Hindus to pursue their own connection to God and spirituality according to their own temperament. We are free to follow any one or combination of four paths; i.e., through Knowledge ( ान योग), Service (कम योग), Devotion (भ योग) or Meditation (राज योग). This freedom has also allowed many sects to flourish without conflict under the fundamental tenants of Hinduism. There is an inherent message, everyone needs to be a seeker, discover themselves and self-realize rather than follow scriptures blindly. This freedom also is offered for modes of worship. For example, Hindu can be pantheistic, monotheistic, Monist or even atheist as long as he or she adheres to the principle of Dharma. One of the most important tenants of Hinduism is the idea of Dharma (धम). Certain Sanskrit words are difficult to translate in to the English language. Often it is translated as righteous conduct. Brihadakaranya Upanishad states overarching definition (paraphrased) “Any activity that benefits sustenance of this Garden of God is Dharma”. The metaphor of “Garden of God” is deliberate. Besides human, Garden includes all living creatures, plants and precious resources such as air, water, and land. Dharma also means taking care of the environment. Hindus consider their habitat as a privilege ordained by God as care takers rather than owners. As a member of the community, Dharma means exhibiting qualities such as Justice, Fairness, Obligation to Society, Duties (कत) of your respective role (i.e., father, mother, son) in the family, Nobility, Honor, Forgiveness, Truthfulness, Loyalty, Compassion and Spirituality. The epics of Mahabharat and are full of examples of how to determine right and wrong when there is no black and white answer. In the last 35 years, the world has witnessed terrorist attacks such as 9/11 in New York and 26/11 in Mumbai and refugee crisis in recent times. It reminds me of Carl Sagan, an astrophysicist, who made us aware how futile are these conflicts when we look at planet earth captured by NASA as “little blue dot” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupToqz1e2g) which is our home, the only home we know of among the vast infinite cosmic ocean. This understanding is not in conflict with Hinduism. According to Hinduism, God is indestructible and can be called by a thousand names. God is not separate or a third party. Vedas speak of the word “Bramhan” as Holy Cosmic Power or Energy (श) which is responsible for creation, sustenance and finally annihilation. This holy power maintains cosmic order, keeps the Sun, Moon and planets in their respective orbits and makes the laws of nature, and it is the same holy power that manifest in us through five senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch), breathing, and thinking. Recognizing that this same holy power permeates throughout the universe and is present in each of us removes ignorance and impulse of conflict and violence. The Hindu mind is nurtured by wisdom of Vedas which states एकम सत व ा: बधा वद. This statement can be translated as “All paths equally lead to God realization”. Individuals are free to choose their preferred path. What is important is Dharma or following righteous conduct. THE LAWS OF KARMA Dr. Shreedhar Jachak

The Great Law: As you sow, so shall you reap. This is also known as the Law of Cause and Effect. Whatever we put out in this Universe is what comes back to us. If what we want is happiness peace, friendship and love then we should be happy, peaceful, loving and a friend. The Law of Creation: Life just doesn’t happen; it requires our participation. We are one with the Universe, both inside and out. Whatever surrounds us gives up clues to our inner state. Be and do yourself. Do what you want to have in your life. The Law of Humility: What you refuse to accept, will continue for you. If what we see as an enemy or someone with a character trait that we find to be negative, then we ourselves are not focussed on a higher level of existence. The Law of Growth: Wherever you go. there you are. For us to grow in spirit, it is we who must change and not the people, places or the things around us. The only given we have in our lives is ourselves and that is the only factor we have control over. When we change who and what, we are within our heart and our life changes too. The Law of Responsibility: Whenever there is something wrong, there is something wrong in us. We mirror what surrounds us. We must take responsibility for what is in our life. The Law of Connection: Even if something we do is inconsequential; it is very important that it gets done as everything in the Universe is connected. Each step leads to the next step and so on and so forth. Someone must do the initial work to get the job done. Neither the first step nor the last are of great importance. They were both needed to accomplish the task, past, present and future. They are all connected. The Law of Focus: You can't think of two things at the same time. When our focus is on spiritual values, it is impossible for us to have lower thoughts such as greed or anger. The Law of Giving & Hospitality: If you believe something to be true then something in your life, you will be called upon to demonstrate that truth. Here is where we put what we say that we have learned into practice.9 The Law of Here and Now:Looking back to examine what was prevents us from being totally in the Here and Now. Old thoughts, old patterns of behaviour and old dreams prevent us from having new ones.10. The Law of Change:History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need change our path. Krishna: “No doubt, O Arjuna, the mind is difficult to control and ever moving. But, O Son of Kunti it can be held through practice and dispassion. Meditation is difficult to be found by someone whose self is not in control - this is My view. But by someone who endeavours with a controlled self, it can be attained by appropriate methods.”

Bhagavad Gita 6:35,36
