Highlights of this month’s Financial Report:
Report - Period Ending 29 February 2020
Revenue
Total revenue of $12.457M to 29 February 2020 represents 36% of the total budget of $34.181M.
These statements are for 8 months of the financial year and generally would represent 67% of the overall budget.
Generally budgets are on track after 8 months of the financial year. If you take into consideration the FAGs payment of $1,762,862, revenue would be at $14.220M, 42% of the budget.
Rates will go out on the 16th March, with a discount period closing on 16th April.
Expenses
Total expenditure of $14.685M to 29 February 2020 represents 63% of the total budgeted expenditure of $23.182M.
Over the next 2 months Council will incur some major costs for capital works, however claims should offset these costs.
Outcome
There is currently a cash Deficit of $2.228M.

Operational Information:
Staffing for 2020: Advertisements were placed for Casual Tourism guides within the information centre and Interviews held. We are pleased to congratulate Stephanie Retschlag and Alexis Wallace. Stephanie joins us from a medical/admin background and Alexis is a returning staff member who has worked at the information centre previously. Welcome to the newest team members and please make them feel welcome and introduce yourself if you see them about.
Accreditation 2020 site visit: The Visitor information centre had its online audit in 2019 by Visit Queensland. This year (2020) we are set to have our site Visit in March. (Date yet to be advised). We our on Track for our 2020 site visit with just a few final house keeping duties and updating of folders and we are set to go.
Update on Air conditioning: On the 10th of February Queensland rail met with CRE (electrician) and Monique Johnson to discuss the installation of the air conditioning system. QLD Heritage has approved the installation of doors to platform and installation of an air/heat system. Its wonderful news to hear that Qld Heritage approved part of the plans provided by Emily Jukes (Architect) to refurbish the information Centre.
Refurbishment of the Gardens at the Railway station: Qld Rail (David Reis) have been meeting with Arborist and Council to come up with a solution of how to solve the issue of the tree roots lifting the kerbing around the garden and destroying the road surface. QR met with the tenants and stakeholders of the railway station to discuss the plans for the refurbishment. Qld Rail will do a local media release to advise the residents as to the plans as the time gets closer.

Tour Revenue Breakdown – Growth over Past Two Months February has been both Wet and overcast with much cloud cover. Numbers have been down for that reason.
Souvenir Breakdown: A total of $554.10 was sold in souvenirs this month, $473.50 from Cosmos and $80.60 at VIC.

Operational Information
Mike continues working on projects. We are working on getting processes, staff and training in place prior to the peak season. Mike is very close to completing an Observatory Wet weather plan for the Planetarium. This will be a great replacement, so we don’t need to cancel an evening Show. We also have Movies from the USA arriving soon for more day time running shows in the Planetarium.
We will have a number of new staff starting in March 2020. We will start training staff mid March 2020.
We are working on quotes for the new Cosmos Interactive areas. We have two quotes in at the moment and waiting on another.
The Company Bintel came out to the Cosmos Centre February 14-16 to fix and service the telescopes. They did a great job and were able to fix all concerns we had with the Telescopes. This was much better and easier than sending the Telescopes to get serviced/fixed.
Due to the slow Month and bad Weather, the Cosmos staff has been manning the Café reducing casual Café wages within the Cosmos Café.
We opened the Observatory bookings on Thursday PM show (27 Feb 20) and also opened on Saturday (29 Feb 20) for the local football competition. Attendance during the extended operating hours was poor.

We are heading into the busiest event month I have seen since working with the Murweh Shire Council. If there could be as many hands on deck and support for all the upcoming events as possible it would be very much appreciated. If events aren’t done well there is no point doing them and the amount of money they bring to different businesses and projects in our Shire is very helpful so we want to see them succeed and continue on for many years. The below Google Analytics are still looking very promising for our region. No one has a crystal ball and cannot tell 100% what people will do this season but so far the search results are showing we are certainly on the map for our visitors to Outback this year.
General Business for the month of December.
Wow and just like that February is already gone. So much already behind us but so much more to come. 2020 is bound to be the biggest year on the ‘events’ calendar for some time. There are three new events taking place this year, Veteran 1 & 2 Cylinder Rally, 30 Years on 1990 Charleville Flood event and the Beach to Reach event. All these events are promising to bring very different demographics to our region plus something just for the locals and previous residents of Charleville and Murweh.
‘30 Years On, 1990 Charleville Flood’ event is shaping up nicely. Plenty of team effort happening. The work Camp are busily building display boards to be used at the Hangar and at the Mulga Lands Gallery for both displays. They are also working on a Flood Height display stand that will sit in Wills Street opposite the NAB bank. This way people can actually physically see how high the waters were. John Wallace is working on funding at the moment to have permanent structures like this for Charleville.
SWRED Tourism arm have been working alongside Liz Ward and Anita Clark, redesigning the Queensland’s Southern Outback website and putting extra content into it relating to groups and bus itineraries. This project also redesign of the old logo launched a couple years ago at the Cosmos Centre so we look forward to seeing what the new ones will be like and if they gain the attention more than the previous one did. It will mean extra work for someone to update on a quarterly timeframe as Tourism is changing all the time and the digital world is getting bigger, busier and better. SWRED under Alison Shaw’s’ guidance from the Right Grant, were recently successful in receiving funds to do another Outback Events launch as we did in Brisbane last year. This event will take place in St George this time and will be live on the Today Show weather crosses on Wednesday the 8th of April. As this time falls between two of our major events, I will not attend but have invited Masterchef Matty Sinclair and Scott Jennings from ‘Beach to Reach’ to promote our region with their new event and this will cover both Murweh and Maranoa. Roma also has their ‘Easter in the Country’ event around this time so are short on team to attend as well so all will fall into place perfectly.
Qld Rail recently visited on two separate occasions discussing where we are up to with our requests to upgrade the railway Station foyer and office space. It looks like the air-conditioning will eventuate throughout the station doing both hot and cold temps. Once this is in place we will move to install back doors going out to the platform to keep the temperature at a comfortable level. The other visit was to discuss the garden beds out the front that are heritage listed but doing major damage to the road. The problem being they can’t be moved too far out towards the road as it comes under Main Roads then and also the Telstra pit is there. The best option at the moment looks to be to remove the trees (I can just hear you all ) and fix the edges of the garden beds and then replant established trees in the garden beds so as not to change the aesthetics of the area too much. Arborists have been consulted and to even trim the roots of these particular trees will cause them to die so QR are looking for the better option and what type of trees will survive and grow in that location.
Our 2020 Tourism team as been employed and we look forward to focusing on all things Murweh in the coming months. Three tourism Trainees will take up post stationed at the Cosmos Centre with two of them working on the WWII Tour and Cosmos and the third one focused solely on Cosmos. This will be of great benefit to us securing a tourism team for two years at least. Obviously this department needs its usual casual roles as well and we look forward to sharing our product with these successful applicants.
We hope you have all been able to check out the Blue Tree Project Blue Tree down by the Warrego River Walk for #itsoknottobeok program. There is also one now in Augathella that the local school children painted. This is part of R U OK Day and other Mental Health departments. The Blue Trees are now all over Australia and have their own Facebook page as well so no Charleville and Augathella are both part of that page.

The month of February was a great month with attendance figures improved on last year’s result despite having some heavy rain through the month that sort of had the town cut off for a couple of days.
At the beginning of the month the pool held a swim clinic for all swimming clubs in the Charleville and extended districts. The turnout of swimmers was very good with over 60 attending the clinic co-hosted by Queensland Swimming coach and mentor Barry Prime and myself. Swimmers from Cunnamulla, Augathella, Morven and Charleville swimming clubs were in attendance and the feedback from the swimmers and parents alike were very positive with another clinic to be planned for next swim season.
Still on swimming, 3 Charleville swimmers and 1 swimmer from Augathella, travelled to Brisbane to compete at the Queensland State Sprint Titles, competing against the very best in Queensland club swimming. They all competed very well with all doing huge personal best times and for some it was their first swim at Chandler which was a bit daunting at first. It is looking very good for next season as I have at least another 6 swimmers that are very close to Qualifying for next year’s titles so it is hoped we will have a bigger contingent travelling to the State titles next year.
The Southwest regional swimming titles were held in Charleville late February and were a great success, with at least 6 local swimmers selected to compete at Queensland State Schools in both primary and secondary levels in late March. It was a great effort by these local kids as they were up against the very best in Southwest region including Roma and District, St George district, Miles and Chinchilla districts.
St Mary’s school swimming is still in progress with just over half their block completed. We have had a number of Adult swimmers for Wednesday morning adult squad which is awesome, mostly training for the local Triathlon to be held later in the month of March.
The last weekend in February saw the Adrian Vowles cup being held with lots of away teams attending which was great for the town’s economy. This also boosted our attendance figures

Back Log Our current work load is sitting at an estimated 340 hours of work to be completed across the fleet, not including any breakdowns or services needed during the time to clear the backlog. We are currently clearing an estimated 40 hours a week of this back log, as well as keeping up with breakdowns and servicing. Komatsu Loader After the delay, the Komatsu is now due to arrive 15th of March. Contractors While utilising Komatsu for our contractor needs, we are finding that the cost of Komatsu Labour hire I more efficient than our current staff efficiency. This is taking into account the reduction in downtime. This will be monitored in closer detail when the Ausfleet system is in full use and our Fitters will be receiving reports on their efficiency. Apprentice Our new apprentice Luke Worthington has now started and, at this stage, seems that he will be a valuable member of the team. His commitment and work ethic is of a high standard. Maintenance Management System The Ausfleet system is currently being set up to use. The Ausfleet will be here on the 11th – 13th of March for training. The system has had all of the fleet entered and Ausfleet are important our employee driver list also. The system is expected to be in full use by the end of March. Earthworks The earthworks are now complete and work awarded to D-Mac is now as specified. Cadastral Survey The cadastral survey of the revised estate layout was completed in February. Finance
The documentation for Stage 1, Milestone 3 has been submitted to the Department of State Development. Power Supply Ergon have made a final inspection of the routes for construction of new power lines into the Industrial Estate and Booster Pumping Station sites, and they are approved for construction. Maintenance Recent rainfall has created some erosion on the site. This will be substantially eliminated when the stormwater drainage system is constructed, but in the interim, some maintenance is required.
