DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF MUSIC EDUCATION IN IAŞI: AN OVERVIEW AFTER 155 YEARS Laura Otilia Vasiliu152 Abstract: Over a century and a half after the establishment of the first state educational institution dedicated to music in Iaşi – the School of Music and Declamation (1860) – the distinctive features of music education and the social and cultural phenomena involved can be perceived and analyzed. This study provides arguments to support the following features: 1. the openness to assimilate a variety of pedagogic and cultural influences, both from Europe and from Romania; 2. the role played by leading personalities, musicians – professors, in rising performance levels and in perpetuating the project; 3. valorizing Romanian music traditions - liturgical songs of Byzantine origin and regional folklore - through education (specializations, courses, creative activities and music performance); 4. the constant involvement of music education in concerts and musical performances in Iaşi. Introduction The historical research of music education in Iaşi has a deep-rooted tradition. In the beginning, it was Teodor T. Burada (considered to be the first Romanian musicologist) who, in significant studies153 published in the 8th and 9th decades of the 19th century, described the School, later the Conservatory of Music and Declamation, within the cultural ambience of the city of Iaşi in those times. The rigorous and objective Annual written by Alexandru Aurescu în 1905154 was also of cardinal importance in this respect. This volume was meant to be part of the work of the National Exhibition organized in 1906 to celebrate 40 years of the reign of King Carol I of Romania, to show "the progress made by the Romanian people under his happy and wise reign”155. -

Florea Vladimir, my grandmother’s father, played flute and saxophone. Both of my great-grandfathers on my mother’s side were musicians. Stefan Pocitari, my great-grandfather on my father’s side, played flute in the Moldovan State Philharmonic. Vasile Pocitari, my grandfather, was a violinist and a member of the Moldovan State Philharmonic. My parents, Lilia and Petru Vieru, worked in many folk orchestras including Orchestra Fluieras, Lăutari, and Folclore. I have other relatives including aunts, uncles and cousins who are professional musicians. Our family has been referred to as the Pocitari Dynasty because of both the depth of our roots in the region and the extension of our reach more recently around the world. My parents shared their love and knowledge of Moldovan music with me and made me realize how unique and beautiful our music is. They encouraged me from the youngest age to work hard to develop my skills, and they exposed me to professional classical and Moldovan folk music by allowing me to accompany them to rehearsals when I was not even five years old! I learned the names of the pieces and memorized the melodies; I was fascinated by the beautiful traditional costumes, the combination of dance and music, and the interesting rhythms. -

Învăţământ, Cercetare, Creaţie Vol. 7 No. 1 - 2021 413 Religious choral music in Bassarabia and the contribution of the composer Vladimir Ciolac in the development of this genre Inga POSTOLACHE1 Abstract: The sacred choral music in Bassarabia represents the most fundamental side of the national culture. The traditions of the sacred choral music have been developed over the centuries.The musicologist Larisa Balaban points out evidently: “The contemporary composers find unexpected artistic resources in the field of sacred music compositions.”2 In the last 20 years of 20th century, a number of choral compositions that belong to religious genre were created. The works of Moldavian composers, based on religious texts, contain as a benchmark the addressing problems of human existence, the philosophical perception of life and the joy of communion with spiritual truths – all being conveyed, suggestive to the listeners. These works are distinguished from each other by the manner of exposure, the development of the musical material, the implementation of individual compositional techniques, and last but not least, by the achievement of the proposed artistic aims. Key-words: Vladimir Ciolac; choral creation; religious themes Introduction The spiritual creations of Vladimir Ciolac are a real gallery of spectacular images, full of light, that reevaluate the melodic expressiveness and the progress of the choral structure. His spiritual works can be classified in two categories: one category that belongs to orthodox cult, and the other category that belongs to catolic rite. Modern composers in Bessarabia have a visible inclination towards the field of church music and sacred musical genres, which leads them to rediscover the tradition of religious music and to put aside the unbelief and doubt.
