Reflecting Antiquity explores the rediscovery of Roman glass and its influence on modern glass production. It brings together 112 objects from more than 24 lenders, featuring ancient Roman originals as well as the modern replicas they inspired. Following are some of the highlights on view in the exhibition. Portland Vase Base Disk The Portland Vase is the most important and famous work of cameo glass to have survived from ancient Rome. Modern analysis of the vase, with special attention to the elongation of the bubbles preserved in the lower body, suggest that it was originally shaped as an amphora (storage vessel) with a pointed base. At some point in antiquity, the vessel suffered some damage and acquired this replacement disk. The male figure and the foliage on the disk were not carved by the same Unknown artist that created the mythological frieze on the vase. Wearing a Phrygian cap Portland Vase Base Disk Roman, 25 B.C.–A.D. 25 and pointing to his mouth in a gesture of uncertainty, the young man is Paris, a Glass Object: Diam.: 12.2 cm (4 13/16 in.) prince of Troy who chose Aphrodite over Hera and Athena as the most beautiful British Museum. The Great Tazza A masterpiece of cameo-glass carving, this footed bowl (tazza) consists of five layers of glass: semiopaque green encased in opaque white, green, a second white, and pink. -

Mountains are part of the Gangdese Island Arc at south margin of Lhasa continental block. Light-tan areas on flanks of mountains adjacent to almost vegetation-free flood plain are modern and ancient climbing sand dunes that exhibit evidence of strong winds. From flood plain of Lhasa He, and from flood plain of much larger Yarlung Zangbo to the south (see figs. 2, 3, 13), large dust storms and sand storms originate today and are common in capitol city of Lhasa. Classical and Hellenistic glass workshops from Rhodes Pavlos Triantafyllidis* Among the various crafts of Rhodes, glass making1 undoubtedly occupied an important position during the Classical and Hellenistic periods in the thriving commer- cial and economic activity of the island2. The arguments for a flourishing glassworking production on the island of Rhodes are mainly based on the typological and chrono- logical study of many finds, and on workshop evidence which came to light during the fifty-four years of rescue excavations of the 22nd Ephorate of Prehistorical and Classical Antiquities, mainly at the edge of the plain, in the Pano;ı “Akran (Diodoros 20.83.1-4), the town of Rhodes, as well as in the excavations of the then Italian Archaeological Service3 in Ialysos and Camiros. 1. The end of the sixth century and the fifth century BC The local glass production of Rhodes seems to have begun in the last quarter of the 6th century BC with the manufacture of opaque core-formed vessels (fig. 1), but also of opaque rod-formed head-shaped and figurine-pen- dants (fig. 2) and of multi-coloured beads of similar manufacture to the core-formed vessels found mainly in Fig. 1 — Core-formed amphoriskoi. Geosci. • 2(3) • 2010 • 399-419 DOI: 10.2478/v10085-010-0015-6 Central European Journal of Geosciences Volcanic glass textures, shape characteristics and compositions of phreatomagmatic rock units from the Western Hungarian monogenetic volcanic fields and their implications for magma fragmentation Research Article Károly Németh∗ Volcanic Risk Solutions CS-INR, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Received 2 April 2010; accepted 17 May 2010 Abstract: The majority of the Mio-Pleistocene monogenetic volcanoes in Western Hungary had, at least in their initial eruptive phase, phreatomagmatic eruptions that produced pyroclastic deposits rich in volcanic glass shards. Electron microprobe studies on fresh samples of volcanic glass from the pyroclastic deposits revealed a primarily tephritic composition. A shape analysis of the volcanic glass shards indicated that the fine-ash fractions of the phreatomagmatic material fragmented in a brittle fashion. In general, the glass shards are blocky in shape, low in vesicularity, and have a low-to-moderate microlite content. The glass-shape analysis was supplemented by fractal dimension calculations of the glassy pyroclasts. The fractal dimensions of the glass shards range from 1.06802 to 1.50088, with an average value of 1.237072876, based on fractal dimension tests of 157 individual glass shards. The average and mean fractal-dimension values are similar to the theoretical Koch- flake (snowflake) value of 1.262, suggesting that the majority of the glass shards are bulky with complex boundaries. Light-microscopy and backscattered-electron-microscopy images confirm that the glass shards are typically bulky with fractured and complex particle outlines and low vesicularity; features that are observed in glass shards generated in either a laboratory setting or naturally through the interaction of hot melt and external water. -

James Lee Copyright by Peng He 2014 Abstract Precision glass molding is a net-shaping process to fabricate glass optics by replicating optical features from precision molds to glass at elevated temperature. The advantages of precision glass molding over traditional glass lens fabrication methods make it especially suitable for the production of optical components with complicated geometries, such as aspherical lenses, diffractive hybrid lenses, microlens arrays, etc. Despite of these advantages, a number of problems must be solved before this process can be used in industrial applications. The primary goal of this research is to determine the feasibility and performance of nonconventional optical components formed by precision glass molding. This research aimed to investigate glass molding by combing experiments and finite element method (FEM) based numerical simulations. The first step was to develop an integrated compensation solution for both surface deviation and refractive index drop of glass optics. An FEM simulation based on Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan (TNM) model was applied to predict index drop of the molded optical glass. The predicted index value was then used to compensate for the optical design of the lens. Using commercially available general purpose software, ABAQUS, the entire process of glass molding was simulated to calculate the surface deviation from the adjusted lens geometry, which was applied to final mold shape modification. -

In this project I am researching in what ways can handmade architectural craft change a space? In exploring how handmade glass can change a space, I will investigate how unseen glass traditions which happen in the workshop outside of public view can be present in a crafted object, and what society’s perception of craft might be historically and currently. I believe that public glass is lacking in the handmade. In the past society had depended on craftsmen to make windows, but now as they are mostly machine made it has become void of certain qualities. I would say architectural and functional glass is often overlooked as just a building material or tool, an object that is not seen or a transparent wall.
