RESEARCH INTERESTS

2010-Present Adult Learning Preferences and Teaching Philosophy Matching and Reporting System: An online computer system for linking learners to instructors by connecting instructors’ instructional philosophies to learners’ preferences is provided. Each term the invention offers instructors the opportunity to self-select teaching characteristics for each type of course taught; and allows learners to identify preferred modes of learning, problem-solving, and decision making. Utilizing instructor and learner data, the system identifies a match between learner preferences and instructor philosophies, providing learners with a list of the relevant instructors and their courses for the current term. The system also provides learners with a brief report on learner preferences and suggestions for maximizing learner strengths, and managing other learning modalities. The system integrates with an institution’s academic records management and student recruitment software. Priority Patent Application Number 61/626,043

2009-Present Integration of Web Tools: A by-faculty-for-faculty model of research and application of technology integration into teaching; faculty mentor development via faculty summer institutes

2008-Present Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher/Administrator Professional Development: CTE Teacher Training The training focused on active learning strategies and assessment techniques. Training participants were also given the opportunity to explore the use of multimedia. Specific training topics included: • Adult learning theory; multiple intelligence theory; learning styles • Curriculum frameworks; state standards • Industry certifications • Learning outcomes at the course level o Key words and terminology from the State • Writing learning objectives/learning outcomes • Lesson planning FENTON, CELESTE PAGE 9

• Active learning strategies • Traditional and Alternative Assessment strategies • eLearning Pre-survey and post-survey results indicate CTE teachers/administrators need professional development.

2005-2008 Teacher Professional Development: Research shows that teacher professional development is a critical factor in student achievement. But with grading, lesson planning, meetings, school duties, parent and student conferences, who has time for training? To research the impact of online professional development for teachers, I continued the IT3 Federal grant as part of the HCC Professional Development department. The research project delivered a series of online courses focused on professional development to educators in the School District of Hillsborough County (SDHC), the nation’s ninth largest school district. With a focus on both technology and teaching/learning strategies, the courses provide teachers the opportunity to engage in professional development when learning is most convenient to them, and to experience online learning. The courses have been met with approval by school district administrators who welcome the availability of quality professional development from the college. To date, the program boasts a retention rate exceeding 70%, and has served over 500 educators in the District. The program is highlighted on the Florida Department of Education’s Community College website as providing a Best Practice online program in workforce development. The program was selected as a national finalist for the Bellwether Award, an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.

2005-2009 College Placement Test Tutorial: The significant percentage of college students taking prep classes, coupled with the large numbers of students at the State and district levels that are not scoring above the cutoffs point to a need to provide assistance to individuals struggling to pass the CPT. At the present time there is very little literature, study guides, or other information on the CPT that equal the sophistication and interactivity of SAT or ACT CD-ROM materials. As a proactive measure, an interactive, multimedia CD-ROM focused on the for middle and high school students (potential community college students), and returning adult students needing a refresher prior to taking the CPT was developed. The CPT Tutorial is designed as a computer-based instruction program that has a format and question content closely aligned with the original test, while still preserving the integrity of the CPT. The CPT is designed so that students will take a pre-test that evaluates which areas to improve upon. Students will then participate in mini-lesson reviews for Basic Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills. Each mini lesson contains print and multimedia (video, animation, narration, etc.) explanations of concepts. A “check for knowledge” multiple choice question section is included that provides feedback if the wrong answer is selected. Upon completing the mini-lessons, the student takes a post-test to assess improvement and comprehension. The intent of the tool is to: 1) familiarize students with the function of the CPT; 2) increase numbers of students who successfully achieve a passing score; 3) reduce pre-enrollment attrition rate; and 4) increase the numbers of students able to begin taking credit course upon admittance. Research was conducted to establish the validity and reliability of the tutorial using a traditional pre/post-test design with approximately 200 students in public school systems across the State. This research was highlighted for three years by the College Board as part of the national conference agenda.

2002-2006 IT3: Information Technology + Instructional Technology + Innovative Teaching: Through a 2 million-dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the Improvement of Education, I was the PI and grant manager. Four goals drove the project: 1) a continuation of the successful IT3 successful teacher training program that has, since 2002, provided IT training and resources to teachers, counselors, and administrators in the School District of Hillsborough County (SDHC), the nation’s 9th largest school district; 2) research and delivery of a series of online interactive professional development training to educators; 3) research on the comparison of the effectiveness of online versus instructor led professional development for educators; and 4) continued research and development on a College Placement Test and College Readiness Tips CD. The project resulted in the first online model of professional development for in-service teachers in the School District of Hillsborough County.
