FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA North End Post 144 — Veterans of Foreign War Commemorate Memorial Day 2010

Left to Right: Lino Rullo, State Senator Sal DiDomenico, Consul General of Italy Boston, Liborio Stellino and a Carabinieri celebrate Italian Republic Day. Italian Republic Day celebrations were held on May 30 and 31, 2010 in Boston’s North End. On May 30th a bocce tournament was held at the bocce courts on Commercial Street and on May 31st Christopher Columbus Park was transformed into an Italian style “piazzia” with Italian novelties, gelato, espresso served to the public along with entertainment throughout the day. What do you consider yourself? In this commen- tary disguised as a news story, a viewpoint was being pushed, wasn’t it? All those interviewed for the story said they only checked off the box marked African-American. There was a refer- ence to President Obama who himself identi- fies as African-American seemingly forgetting about his white roots. Why has he done this? He had a choice and made it. Too bad reporters are too timid to ask the presi- dent that question. Too bad the reporter in the Banner story didn’t take the time to interview bi-racial folks who check off two boxes. It might have been informative to know why people check off multiple boxes. My own family is both multi- ethnic and multiracial. I couldn’t “pass” for Irish except probably on the phone talking too much. Most of my friends see me as Italian because of my “looks” and name. They laugh when I say I’m Irish. I have always defined myself rather than letting others define me. I have three nieces and one of them could easily ‘pass” for white. Most people think she’s white but she isn’t concerned what others think. She is herself. My nephew is proud of his Ital- ian, Irish, African and Native American roots. Whenever given the choice of checking off boxes, he always refuses. In Loving Memory of Coro-Dante’s Spring Concert William A. “Sonny” NAPLES Your Loving Wife Josephine and Children Lucille, Rose, Jody and Billy August 8, 1929 May 26, 2006

Over 300 people had the great pleasure of attending the Dante Alighieri Cultural Center’s Coro-Dante Spring concert on Sunday, April 25. Under the direction of Maestro Kevin Galie, the audience was enchanted by the music of Cali, Bellini, Verdi and Leopardi to the piano accompaniment of Emily Taylor. Solo performances were presented by Franco Vitiello and Holly Cameron. A new arrangement of “Arrivederci Roma” by Attilio Poto and Kevin Galie closed the concert to a standing ovation.
