Hello and Welcome,

In January of 2018, Ringling College of Art and Design was chosen by the Bernard Osher Foundation to join a prestigious group of 120 other American colleges and universities operating their lifelong learning programs as Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. Along with the Osher affiliation came a new name: the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Ringling College, or OLLI at Ringling College.

The Bernard Osher Foundation awarded Ringling College of Art and Design an initial grant to support our efforts to develop a stronger sense of community among our learners through volunteerism, leadership development, active membership, and further integration with Ringling College. (See p. 15 for membership details.)

The Osher affiliation provides valuable operational insight through relationships and shared experiences with other OLLI programs across the nation. In the spring of 2019, we will apply for a major endowment from the Osher Foundation that will provide ongoing financial support for all of these initiatives.

In addition to our name change, the following changes have occurred as a result of our receiving the initial Osher Foundation grant:

We now have two types of membership: Gold and Silver Upon course registration, all students will be classified as Silver members. No additional fees are required for this membership level.

Students who wish to support the program, and have an enhanced membership experience, can enroll as a Gold Member for an annual fee of $85. Gold membership is a fantastic way to support the program, save money, and meet new friends. (See p. 5 for a full list of Gold and Silver Member benefits.)

Rhonda Stapleton hired as the Membership and Community Education Coordinator Rhonda’s primary responsibilities are to explore ways in which we will maintain quality programming and encourage community building while expanding our educational offerings and attracting a wider student community. (See p. 6 to learn more about Rhonda Stapleton.)

To be successful in these efforts, we will also look within our membership for volunteers who wish to take on leadership roles and help forge the path to our bright future. (See p. 15 for volunteer information.)

We hope we have left no doubt that being designated an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is truly a prestigious national recognition. However, we want to be very clear that this recognition could not have happened had YOU not chosen to support our lifelong learning program as students, volunteers, and donors over these past 20 years. Thank you.

We look forward to having you with us as we proceed on this fascinating new journey together.

Respectfully,

Janna Overstreet Mark Moulin Director, OLLI at Ringling College Chair, OLLI Transition Committee INDEX Online Details & Registration: www.olliatringlingcollege.org • phone: 941-309-5111

OVERVIEW: The Arts in Cuban Culture travel program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about Cuban architecture, visual arts, dance, and music. Experts in these areas share their experiences and knowledge about the rich and complex narrative of Cuba’s renown arts history. Each day students get guided tours that include visits to restored architectural sites (or those in the process of restoration); or to studios and exhibits in public spaces and private galleries to talk with contemporary artists. At the center of our 2019 program is the “13th Havana Biennial.” The Biennial features artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas and encourages not only traditional artists to show art, but also the most exciting and experimental artistic projects in alternative places all around the city. According to poet, critic, and architect, Nelson Herrera Ysla, a member of the Wifredo Lam Centre of Contemporary Art curatorial team, “the purpose is to occupy public spaces in the city, where the presence of the work of visual artists join dancers, actors, musicians, and architects, all integrated to make moving through the city look like one constant cultural event.” The conceptual platform of the Biennial will respond to the present and, at the same time, “sketch possible notions of the future, at least at the level of the poetic or symbolic, aimed at the needs of social transformation in the world today,” Ysla said.
