19th September 2019 - Week 9 Term 3

Abel Tasman Youth Ambassadors’ Trip School Calendar Last Sunday Jude, Lochie, Malika, Louis and Aonghus had an exciting September day out with the ATYA crews from and Ngatimoti 20th Golden Bay Math's Quiz Schools. After some fun activities at Tahuna Beach, we visited Natureland 24th Miniball Conservation Project, where we had a close look at the Kaka and Kea in 25th Assembly their Aviaries. We made some harakeke plaits and threaded them with 26th Science Fair strips of carrot, parsnip and kumara. We hung these in the aviaries and 27th Kids Artwork Orders Close watched the kaka and kea enjoying these. The Kaka were the breeding 27th Term Three Ends pairs who produced the young, raised at Natureland and soon to be October released at Bark Bay in the Park. Next we went to the Brook Sanctuary to look at how the Pest Proof Fence 14th Term Four Starts operates. We had a walk in the sanctuary with Rick, one of the educators 15th School photos there. We heard about how their trapping programme works and carried 28th Labour Day out a stream study in the Brook Stream. We are now looking forward to November carrying out a similar stream study in Hurst’s property. 1st Golden Bay Football Tournament 4-6th Life Education Caravan 9th Girls & Boys Show 19th School Concert 20th School Concert 22nd Golden Bay Athletics Champs December 6th Yr 6 Powhiri / Orientation 16th Term Four Ends

The walk through kea aviary wasn’t there when I went to Natureland last time. We were able to get quite close to the keas. I didn’t even know about the Brook Santuary with its predator fence to keep out rats, mice, cats, stoats, ferrets, and possums. There are lots of native birds there and they are hoping to introduce kiwi. Louis

At Natureland we checked out 3 breeding pairs of kaka and learnt about the difference between kea and kaka. The kea are more sensible and when they are given food they don’t like they won’t touch it again, whereas the kaka, will try it each time it is given to them. Holly said the kaka are like 2 yr olds and try everything by eating it. It was a great trip. Aonghus Science Fair Over the past few weeks each class has been involved in preparing science experiments in preparation for our Science Fair. Next Thursday afternoon you are invited to visit the classes to see the displays the children have made and see some of the experiments in action as well as question the children on their experiments.

We tried different stuff to soak up the oil. The best one we found was I found that a straw was the paper bag and the worst was the best for containing the oil tea towel. Ruby and the paper bag was the best to recover the oil. I found that oil floats on water Charlie because the molecules that make up the oil are larger than the ones that Oil floats on top of water make up water so ithey can not mix because it is less dense. with each other. Teru Nathaneal

When we put ice cream sticks around the oil in the bowl it trapped it in the corner and got bigger. Carmyn

I learnt that the oil is less dense than water so when we poured the oil into the bowl of water it couldn’t go down because water has a heavier molecular structure than oil so the oil spread across the surface of the water. Angus

We have just had interviews for the 2020 Motupipi Abel Tasman Youth Ambassadors. The children had to put in a written submission as well as attend an interview with Brooke Turner (Project Janszoon Education Officer), Bev Purdie ( Iwi Representaive) and Bruce Vander Lee (Project Janszoon Director) We had 7 children who applied for the 4 places available and they all had a real passion for the environment It was so exciting when we found out that we had been chosen to be the Abel Tasman Youth Ambassadors for 2020. We really wanted to be part of it because we all love nature, and want to make a difference in the Abel Tasman Park. We also are quite excited to work with kids from other schools who care about nature like we do. We have also heard about all the exciting things the ATYA kids have done over the years. It is going to be so cool. We were all really nervous before the interviews and some of the questions were hard and you had to really think.
