EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST for we should so reason that the splendor of the divine countenance, which even the apostle calls “unapproachable”, is for us like an inexplicable LABYRINTH unless we are conducted into it by

word; so that it is better to limp along this path than to dash with all speed outside it.

In the season after Pentecost, we remember the way Christ built his church through the power of the Holy Spirit. Like the first believers, we are being made into a com- munity that is more than just a group of individuals. Together, we are the body of Christ. Let our worship bring us closer together in a bond of real friendship, inspired by the Savior who calls us no longer servants but friends.

We long for more grace. Introit: “All Hail the Power of ’ Name” (Instrumental) call to worship Worship is a back-and-forth dialogue between God and us, beginning when God calls us into his presence.

Minister: Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, All: and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

from Psalm 32.11

salutation We are welcomed into God’s presence for the sake of Christ. Minister: Grace and peace to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! All: Amen! sing praise to god We enter the presence of God singing songs of praise. He deserves our praise both because he made us and because, after we were broken by sin, he did not abandon us but re-made us by grace.

§ “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” Edward Perronet, John Rippon Oliver Holden confession of sin In God’s presence, we have to be honest about who we are. No more excuses. We confess our sins together aloud, and then confess in silence individually.

All: Heavenly Father, before we knew our sin, we felt no need for a savior. You rend our hearts, and now we see. Now that we know how sinful we are, it is hard to believe salvation can be for us. Yet we confess our sins, and we throw ourselves on your mercy, pleading that the atoning sacrifice of Christ at the cross will cover all our transgressions. Show us your grace and your mercy, for the sake of Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. self-examination & silent confession assurance of pardon We don’t have to hide our faults because we take comfort in God’s all-forgiving grace. As you hear the words from Scripture, be assured of God’s pardon to all who believe. “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

from Joel 2.12-13 gloria patri We glorify the Triune God for the great salvation he has ordained, accomplished for us, and applied to our hearts.

All: be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. sing thanks to god Now that God has assured us of pardon,Psalm we sing 8a song of gratitude to glorify him. Psalm 8

Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. Reader: Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! refrain (x2)

We long for more depth. dedication of tithes and offerings All that we have has been provided by God, and he asks that we give a portion back as a form of worship. We do not pass a plate at Grace, but we will pray to dedicate offerings, which can be given at your convenience in a basket at the rear of the sanctuary. You can also give online at graceforsiouxfalls.org. scripture reading If we long for more depth, that depth is found in the Bible, where God has revealed himself to us. Through the reading of the Bible, God speaks to us.

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of any- thing that is in above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neigh- bor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and said to , “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

from Exodus 20.1–21 Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! of intercession Part of our worship is to make our needs known to God through prayer. An officer of the church offers prayer on behalf of the congregation, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. If you would like to request prayer, please speak to one of the officers.

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. ministry of the word As the word of God is proclaimed, receive the message of grace and be transformed. LIVING SACRIFICE: OUR SELFLESS CALLING, PART 11 “HOW TO LIVE IN FREEDOM” Rev. J. Mark Bertrand

Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. from Romans 14.20–23

We long for more community. § confession of faith Together we confess “the faith once delivered to the saints,” joining our voices to represent the unity of our hearts and minds, speaking the same words as countless believers who have gone before us.

Minister: Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in him, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in him shall never die. Do you believe this? All: Yes, we do. We believe that he is the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world. He will save his people from their sins.

from John 11.25-27 and Matthew 1.21 the sacrament of the lord’s supper Communion is an occasion for all baptized Christians to meet with their Savior by faith, to be strengthened and renewed by him, and celebrate him. All who trust alone in Christ as Savior and Lord, belong to a church that embraces the Gospel, are at peace with their neighbor, and seek strength to live more faithfully, are welcome to participatee. If you are not a Christian, or if you choose not to share in this meal, we invite you to spend this time in prayer.

The Lord’s Supper During Phase 2 of Re-Gathering During this phase of the pandemic, Grace is observing a number of precautions to minimize the risk of spread. The most significant is the use of pre-packaged commu- nion elements. These elements are available as you enter the sanctuary. Each packet contains a bread wafer (which contains gluten) and grape juice. Instead of coming forward, we will remain seated to partake of the elements. To access the bread, peel back the upper, transparent seal. To access the cup, peel back the lower, opaque seal. Each pre-packaged set contains grape juice and a wafer of bread.

Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Words of Institution

Minister: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Minister: Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Minister: The gifts of God are for the people of God.

Partake of the Bread and Cup song of celebration As we conclude our worship, we sing a song of joy in celebration of the salvation we have in Jesus Christ.
