Midcaps dazzle…
Greece took centre stage for the last week yet again as the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou called for a referendum on European Union’s deal to bail out debt-ridden Greece. This call for a referendum, however, was later scrapped. This had led to a roller coaster ride across the global markets. Domestic markets commenced the week on a feeble note and remained flat for most of the week. The BSE Midcap index, however, outperformed the frontline indices with a gain of nearly 2%, while the BSE Sensex and the S&P CNX Nifty shed nearly 2%. FII’s remained net buyers for the week to the tune of Rs 4,774 million while DII’s remained as net sellers for Rs 7,851million.
ADAG shares rallied, leading the pack was Reliance Communications. The stock gained about 5% on media reports that Reliance Industries is likely to use Reliance Communications fibre optic cables and towers to foray into telecom sector. Oil marketing companies gained on the back of a hike (to battle rupee depreciation against U.S Dollar) in petrol prices for the 4th successive time in the calendar year. Q2 results impact was witnessed in many stocks, such as Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Havells and Allahabad Bank. HUL topped the Nifty by advancing more than 8% after posting stellar Q2 numbers. SAIL took a heavy blow after posting tepid Q2 numbers on account of higher raw material prices and an exceptional loss due to short term foreign currency borrowing.
Capital goods stocks were in action on reports that the government is planning to impose 14% import duty on power equipments to curb influx of cheaper products, primarily from China. Auto sales numbers for October remained mixed; Maruti monthly sales slumped more than 50% (YoY) due to labor unrest, M&M monthly sales grew nearly 25% (YoY). Two-wheeler sales numbers decelerated sharply as Bajaj Auto sales declined 5 % (MoM) on account of high base effect. TVS Motors sales declined 6% (YoY) and 16% (MoM).
Going forward the markets are likely to remain choppy. Papandreou's winning the vote of confidence has acted as a temporary breather. The developments in the Eurozone are likely to set direction for the markets.
