Captain America, has claimed the United States for Hydra. With most of Earth’s heroes trapped in the Darkforce bubble surrounding Manhattan or stranded behind the Planetary Defense Shield, his power seems absolute. Black Widow believes that the only way to stop Captain America is to kill him. Recently, her team of young heroes helped her liberate a mysterious old man from a Hydra prison--a man Widow claims can win them the war. Meanwhile, Tony Stark hoped to save Captain America by reassembling the Cosmic Cube that rewrote Steve’s history in the first place. But when Ant-Man tipped Hydra off to the location of the Underground’s base in exchange for his daughter’s life, Steve showed up with an army-- and a temporarily resurrected Hulk. Captain America routed the Underground and claimed their cube fragments, but at a terrible cost: his beloved Madame Hydra sacrificed herself to save him from the Mount’s destruction. And with the members of the Underground presumed dead, there’s nothing to stop Widow from going for the kill. The Empowering Squirrel Girl Jayme Horne Submitted for History of Art 390 Feminism and History of Art Professor Ellen Shortell Massachusetts College of Art and Design All the strength of a squirrel multiplied to the size of a girl? That must be the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (fig. 1)! This paper will explore Marvel’s Squirrel Girl character, from her introduction as a joke character to her 2015 The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic series which is being harold as being extremely empowering. This paper aims to understand why a hero like Squirrel Girl would be harold and celebrated by fans, while other female heroes with feminist qualities like Captain Marvel or the New Almighty Thor might be receiving not as much praise. Squirrel Girl was created by Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. Despite both of them having both worked for Marvel and DC, and having written stories about fan favorites like Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and others, they are most known for creating Squirrel Girl, also known as Doreen Green. Her powers include superhuman strength, a furry, prehensile tail (roughly 3-4 feet long), squirrel-like buck teeth, squirrel-like retractable knuckle claws, as well as being able to communicate with squirrels and summon a squirrel army. She was first introduced in 1991, where she ambushed Iron Man in attempt to impress him and convince him to make her an Avenger. That’s when they were attacked one of Marvel’s most infamous and deadly villains, Doctor Doom. After Doctor Doom has defeated Iron Man, Squirrel Girl jumps in with her squirrel army and saves Iron Man1 (fig.

  • "Captain America Must Die": How a Super Soldier Became a Patriot
Author Biography Mackenna is a fourth-year history major, with minors in German and Asian studies. Her research interests include the history of popular culture and the Cold War. In her free time, she enjoys reading comic books and binge-watch- ing Survivor and The Amazing Race. After graduation, she hopes to work as an editor in the comic book industry. Johnson “Captain America Must Die”: How a Super Soldier Became a Patriot by Mackenna Johnson Abstract This paper analyzes the character of Captain America in the midst of the Cold War, and particularly asks how and to what extent the character reflects his con- temporary sociopolitical atmosphere. To achieve this end, I first establish the vital role of popular culture, especially comic books, in modern historical research. I then discuss the history of Captain America, the sociopolitical situation of the 1970s, and, finally, introduce the Secret Empire and Nomad storylines of the 1970s, which form the basis of my argument. The most valuable primary source in this paper is not the comic books themselves, but an interview that I recently conducted with the former author of Captain America, Steve Englehart. Ulti- mately, I argue that Englehart redefined Captain America’s version of patriotism and created a character that was more effectively able to reflect on and respond to social and political events. In bold letters: “The Death of a Hero,” next to the lifeless figure of Cap- tain America tied to a chimney, slumped and bleeding. Two figures stood behind the slain man with bowed heads, one African American with high- tech wings strapped to his back, the other blonde-haired and clad mostly in black.

Steve Rogers’ reality has been secretly rewritten by Kobik, a sentient Cosmic Cube acting under the influence of the Red Skull. In Steve’s new history, a Hydra agent named Elisa Sinclair--A.K.A. Madame Hydra--took Steve from his mother and enrolled him in a school where he was trained to believe in Hydra’s ideals. He also befriended a young Helmut Zemo, whose father, Heinrich, would later be killed by Bucky Barnes. In the present, Zemo and Madame Hydra have returned to Steve’s side, and the pieces are falling into place for a complete Hydra takeover. Steve killed the Red Skull and assumed control of his forces, Madame Hydra gathered a new Hydra High Council, and Zemo routed the Thunderbolts and captured Bucky, but Kobik was shattered in the process.* Meanwhile, fugitive former S.H.I.E.L.D.
