The crowd is so uniformly dressed, in casually smart clothes and expensive sunglasses, that an out• sider might assume invitations to this event had been sent out weeks ago. Most people are clutching plastic ags on white sticks. Some of them car• ry children wearing rosettes in red, white and green. On a temporary stage a succession of speakers talk about the country’s glori• ous history. Italy has taken the day o to celebrate its 150th anniversary as a nation. Treviso’s mayor, Gian Paolo Gobbo, is not celebrating. The desk in his oce faces a large painting of Venice in the style of Canaletto. This has some signicance for Mr Gobbo, who has spent his political career ghting to resus• citate the Republic of Venice, which nally expired in 1797 after a long illness. A NEW WAY FORWARD OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE This is an exciting time to be leading British American Tobacco. We have a new Group vision to satisfy consumer moments in tobacco and beyond, and an enhanced strategy with sustainability as one of its key pillars. This reflects our commitment to building shared value for our shareholders and for society. Harm reduction is crucial to achieving this vision: offering less risky tobacco and nicotine products helps to meet consumer demand, and so makes genuine commercial sense, while also being the right thing to do. This is not new to BAT – harm reduction has been a strategic focus for us for a long time. But it’s only relatively recently that we’ve seen the emergence of a whole new generation of alternative products – with both the rise of e-cigarettes and the potential for innovative tobacco heating devices. We think these products can have the greatest consumer appeal and, therefore, could significantly help in reducing smoking-related disease.

BLANK PAGE MONOGRAPH The FTC Cigarette Test Method for Determining Tar, Nicotins, . and Carbon Monoxide Yields of US. Cigarettes Report of the NCI Expert Committee. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES Public Health Service National Institutes of Health Foreword In response to the emerging scientific evidence that cigarette smoking posed a significant health risk to the user, in the early 1950’s the major cigarette manufacturers began widespread promotion of filtered cigarettes to reassure smokers that, regardless of whatever unhealthy constituents were in cigarette smoke, filters were a “scientific” breakthrough. Advertisements for Viceroy’s “health guard filter” stated, “DENTISTS ADVISE-Smoke VICEROYS-The Nicotine and Tars Trapped by The Viceroy Filter CAN NEVER STAIN YOUR TEETH!” and “Leading N.Y. Doctor,Tells His Patients What to Smoke-Filtered Cigarette Smoke Is Better For Health. The Nicotine and Tars Trapped . ..Cannot Reach Mouth, Throat Or Lungs.” Chesterfield was “Best for you--low in nicotine, highest in quality,” while L&M’s were “Just What the Doctor Ordered.” Lorillard Tobacco Company stressed its science-based Kent micronite filter (the original micronite filter was made of asbestos) and claimed it removed seven times more tar and nicotine than any other cigarette, which “put Kent in a class all by itself where health protection is concerned.” Of course, we know today that not only were these claims patently false, but the cigarette companies knew ,it. In the early 1950’s the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) challenged a variety of health claims made for cigarettes in their advertising, including claims about tar and nicotine.
