You need to understand several things about the items on this recording. Firstly, the tracks were created to match the written script which could often change before recording. Secondly, at that time we did not see the edited tapes in advance, so longer tracks such as doors and rising hums were often created to be faded up or down as required in the studio or at a dub. Thirdly, the technology at our disposal was extremely limited: no multitrack tape machines, computers, samplers or even synthesisers.
For this story I mainly used the “Crystal Palace”, so called because its case was made of clear Perspex which exposed its workings. This machine, created by our engineer Dave Young, could mechanically sample 16 inputs and combine them into a single output in 4 prearranged patterns. The progression of the patterns was deliberately slow to create textures of sound. I was very much interested in exploring changing aural textures in tracks such as “The Learning Hall” and “Kroton Theme”.
BRIAN HODGSON, 2012 From its very beginnings in 1963, innovative sound scores accompanied BBC Television’s Saturday night science fiction adventure, Doctor Who. Generally, the music was provided by contracted freelance composers or - when funds were tight - from “stock” music libraries, whilst the “Special Sound” (what we might now call “Sound Design”) was produced by Brian Hodgson at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Occasionally, budgets were such that no original music could be afforded at all, and on those occasions Brian’s sound expanded its role to fill both functions. The Krotons was one such story. So while some of these sounds are purely atmospheric, others are deliberately created to be more musically evocative. As ever, the Radiophonic Workshop’s engineers and composers were developing new techniques and inventing new devices to enable the creation of the sounds heard here.
