The lovely ladies, Kitty Verdun (Arleen Whelan) and Amy Spettigue (Anne Baxter), have a watchful ward who demands that they be chaperoned at all times. Thus Jack Chesney (James Ellison) and Charley Wyckham (Richard Haydn) convince their third roommate Babbs Babberley (Jack Benny) to dress in drag and pretend to be Charleys Brazilian aunt Donna Lucia, who will accompany the boys on their dates. Comedy ensues when both the ward and Jack Chesneys father fall madly in love with Babbs in drag, that is until the real Donna Lucia (Kay Francis) shows up. Jack Benny; Kay Francis; James Ellison 11/06/2018 024543586180 Fathom DVD-5 1967 Skydiver Fathom Harvill (Raquel Welch) is in Europe with the U.S. skydiving team when a Scottish colonel working for a top-secret western agency approaches her about helping him find a very important atomic device that has been lost. He wants her to use her skydiving skills to parachute into a house to retrieve the device. Embellished with some fictional romance, striking choreography and plenty of laughs, this patriotic film salutes all the entertainers who did their part for the boys. Includes special appearances by Alice Faye, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, George Jessel and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Kay Francis; Carole Landis; Martha Raye 11/06/2018 024543586203 Great Guns DVD-5 1941 In Laurel and Hardys first film for Twentieth Century Fox, they are cast as the butler and chauffeur of a wealthy and pampered young man named Dan Forrester (Dick Nelson), who is drafted into the army. Convinced that young Dan cannot do without them, Laurel and Hardy join the service as well, despite their lack of ability. This sets the scene for many comedic moments, including the boys finding themselves behind a moving target on a rifle range, an amusing bit with a broken light bulb, and a humorous bridge-building scene. When Dan becomes enamored with photo-shop proprietor Ginger Hammond (Sheila Ryan), Laurel and Hardy are convinced she is a gold-digger and do their best to sabotage the romance. They are unsuccessful, however, and Dan proves his manhood while the boys end up captured by the enemy. As usual, hilarity ensues. Stan Laurel; Oliver Hardy; Sheila Ryan 11/06/2018 024543586210 Hollywood Cavalcade DVD-9 1939 Michael Linnett Connors (Don Ameche) takes Molly Adair (Alice Faye) from Broadway understudy to Hollywood star. Edward Bromberg 11/06/2018 024543586227 If I'm Lucky DVD-5 1946 Legendary vocalist Perry Como stars as entertainer Allan Clark, who is manipulated into a gubernatorial campaign by shady manager Wally M. Jones (Phil Silvers). It all begins when Clark is hired to perform at a rally for a gubernatorial candidate who is running against a corrupt incumbent. When Jones notices that the crowd takes a shine to Clark, he manipulates events so that Clark replaces the incumbents opponent. Eventually, the crooked schemes that placed Clark on the ballot weigh on his conscience, and he tells the public that his backers are crooks...and he still manages to win the election! Vivian Blaine; Perry Como; Harry James 11/06/2018 024543586272 Life Begins At Forty DVD-5 1935 Good-hearted small-town newspaper owner Kenesaw H. Clark (Will Rogers) has a chance meeting with ex-con Lee Austin, just in time to prevent Austin from committing a crime. When Kenesaw sees something worthwhile in the boy, he takes him in and teaches him to earn an honest wage. He also schools Austin the ways of romance, helping him to woo local beauty Adele Anderson. Austins mere presence in town is enough to irritate town banker Colonel Abercrombie, who still holds a grudge against the man he thinks robbed his bank. When Kenesaw refuses to abandon Austin, Abercrombie shuts down the newspaper. Confused by why the Colonel would still hold a grudge against a man who has already served his time, the old newsman does some digging...with surprising results! Will Rogers; Richard Cromwell; George Barbier 11/06/2018 024543586289 Lillian Russell DVD-9 1940 Her girl-next-door looks combined with a sultry singing voice made Alice Faye one of Hollywoods biggest stars in the Golden Age of Cinema. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero.

  • 1 Exploring Detective Films in the 1930S and 1940S: Genre, Society and Hollywood
Notes 1 Exploring Detective Films in the 1930s and 1940s: Genre, Society and Hollywood 1. For a discussion of Hollywood’s predilection for action in narratives, see Elsaesser (1981) and the analysis of this essay in Maltby (1995: 352−4). 2. An important strand of recent criticism of literary detective fiction has emphasised the widening of the genre to incorporate female and non-white protagonists (Munt, 1994; Pepper, 2000; Bertens and D’Haen, 2001; Knight, 2004: 162−94) but, despite Hollywood’s use of Asian detectives in the 1930s and 1940s, these accounts are more relevant to contemporary Hollywood crime films. 3. This was not only the case in B- Movies, however, as Warner’s films, includ- ing headliners, in the early 1930s generally came in at only about an hour and one- quarter due to budgetary restraints and pace was a similar neces- sity. See Miller (1973: 4−5). 4. See Palmer (1991: 124) for an alternative view which argues that ‘the crimi- nal mystery dominates each text to the extent that all the events in the narrative contribute to the enigma and its solution by the hero’. 5. Field (2009: 27−8), for example, takes the second position in order to create a binary opposition between the cerebral British whodunnit and the visceral American suspense thriller. 6. The Republic serials were: Dick Tracyy (1937), Dick Tracy Returns (1938), Dick Tracy’s G- Men (1939) and Dick Tracy vs Crime, Inc. (1941) (Langman and Finn, 1995b: 80). 7. The use of the series’ detectives in spy-hunter films after 1941, however, modifies this relationship by giving them at least an ideological affiliation with the discourses of freedom and democracy that Hollywood deploys in its propagandistic representation of the Allies in general and the United States in particular.
