0 a History of Palestinian Uprisings Through 0 A History of Palestinian Uprisings through Prison Resistance since 1967 by Grailing Anthonisen Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University, Montreal July 2019 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Grailing Anthonisen, 2019 1 Abstract This thesis explores how Palestinian prisoners in Israel and across the Middle East organized and mobilized during periods of nationalist revolt since the 1970s. It examines the way prisoners formed internal governing structures and committees that provided order, discipline, and services, like education. With the help of these structures, prisoners raised morale and maintained the unity necessary for collective action. Prisoners participated in collective actions ranging from noncompliance, hunger strikes and refusing to stand for counts to more militant stances, like rioting, and arson. Prisoners themselves created important art works and also came to be symbols of sumud, or steadfastness in the broader culture of Palestinian resistance. The thesis considers the way resistance was a collective and individualized endeavour for Palestinian prisoners and how often the line between the two blurred. And through narrating prisoners’ organization and mobilization, the thesis shows exactly how prisons became nationalist spaces and how these nationalist spaces changed over time. Résumé Cette thèse explore comment les prisonniers palestiniens en Israël et au Moyen-Orient se sont organisés et mobilisés lors des diverses révoltes nationalistes depuis les années 1970s. Elle examine les façons dont les prisonniers ont formé des structures de gouvernance interne et et des comités qui ont maintenu l’ordre et la discipline et ont aussi offert plusieurs services, tel l’éducation. À l'aide de ces structures, les prisonniers ont préservé le moral de leur groupe et maintenu l’unité nécessaire pour entreprendre des actions politiques collectives. Les prisonniers ont pris part à des actions allant de la non-conformité et désobéissance, la grève de la faim et le refus de se lever pour les décomptes, jusqu’aux actions plus militantes comme les émeutes et les incendies. Les prisonniers ont aussi créé des œuvres d’art importantes et sont devenus des symboles de sumud, ou ténacité dans la culture de résistance palestinienne plus généralement. Cette thèse considère comment résistance était collective et individuelle pour les prisonniers palestiniens et comment les deux ne sont pas complètement séparés. Part racontant l’organisation et mobilisation des prisonniers palestiniens, cette thèse montre comment les prisons sont devenues des espaces nationalistes et comment ces espaces nationalistes ont I never would have made it through without you. 5 Introduction Historical Background In April 1920, the League of Nations granted Great Britain the Mandate for Palestine, which came into full effect in September 1923. This was a legal and constitutional document that granted them the right to rule the land and its people. The document did not mention Palestinian people by name or mention any right to self-determination. In contrast, it explicitly recognized the then-Jewish minority and their national rights. It guaranteed the right to establish a Jewish National Home. It either denied Palestinians rights to national determination and representation or “subordinated

Established in 1992 by a group of activists interested in human rights, the center offers support to Palestinian prisoners and detainees, advocates for the rights of political prisoners, and works to end torture through monitoring, legal procedures and solidarity campaigns. Addameer (Arabic for conscience) believes in the importance of building a free and democratic Palestinian society based on justice, equality, rule of law and respect for human rights within the larger framework of the right to self determination.     A History of Jerusalem1 By Mahdi Abdul Hadi Introduction Jerusalem, al-Quds al-Sharif (The Noble Holy City), has a long and rich history, accentuated by its religious, symbolic and strategic significance. It stands as a witness to the life and cultures of the great number of peoples, who have lived, belong or ruled over it. The long history, central importance and spiritual imagery of the city have generated a vast literature of various narratives on the question of Jerusalem. And owing to the emotion the city arouses, few authors have been able to resist coloring their work with selective analysis aimed at showing which group of people has the most valid “claim” of ownership or belonging to the city. The result is that one can now find several sources to support some argument, and that there is little consensus about long periods of the city’s history. Indeed, there are probably few subjects that have generated so much mutually contradictory research and analysis. Therefore, a broad review of Jerusalem’s history should not focus on details but rather try to notice the general trends that combine to form the legacy of Jerusalem. The diversity and holiness of the city as well as its potential as a center for the meeting of diverse civilizations and intellectuals are the greatness of Jerusalem.     We asked the Israeli Embassy in London whether they wished to respond to Mahmoud’s allegations of torture. We asked: - • Firstly, does Israel recognise the right of Palestinians to have a national football team and other national sports teams? • Secondly, Mahmoud says he was tortured when he was held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities between 2009 and 2012. Would you like to respond to that allegation? • Thirdly, Mahmoud expressed concern that he and other sports people have been/are being deliberately targeted by the Israeli authorities — both in terms of being detained, imprisoned and tortured, and also in being denied exit visas so they can go to play matches. What is your view on that? The Israeli Embassy didn’t answer our questions but did respond with this statement: To describe Mahmoud Sarsak as simply “a Palestinian footballer” is plainly insulting to footballers. Mr Sarsak was arrested on the basis of information pointing to his involvement in military activities of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Rafah. This included the planting of explosive devices, recruiting and training terrorist cells, and maintaining contacts with PIJ’s militant leaders. PIJ has continuously fired rockets at Israelis and has claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks. Sarsak’s defining characteristic is unfortunately, his terror activity and not the football he may play in his spare time. What’s at stake here is not the right of Palestinians to a football team, but rather the misuse of sports in order to cloak terror activity. As recently as two months ago, on April 28, 2014, another Palestinian national soccer team player, Samah Fares Muhamed Maravawas , was arrested upon the team’s return from Qatar.

Khouri (Daily Star staff) interviews Dr. Mahdi Abdul Hadi BEIRUT: The Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem are likely to focus heavily on local issues and services in the years ahead, as their major population centers remain isolated from one another and the world, according to a respected Palestinian political analyst. Dr. Mahdi Abdel-Hadi, founder and chairman of the Jerusalem-based Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs (PASSIA), also warns about the potential of Palestinians responding to their difficult situation by trying to emigrate to Jordan. He said in an interview with The Daily Star last week that, "the Palestinian people are not talking much any more about a two-state solution and where we go from here. They're talking about the culture of the prison." He used the prison analogy to refer to Jerusalem, Nablus, Ramallah, Hebron, Gaza and other cities that were being totally isolated by the Israeli separation wall, settler roads, and land confiscations. "In each prison a culture and a different agenda develop. There's no consensus where all Palestinians stand together around one position." He characterized Nablus as a city of "militias, high unemployment and poverty, the absence of a real authority governing society or a municipality offering services, or an active chamber of commerce, businessmen and professionals."
