MARUMAKKATHAYAM MARRIAGE COMMISSION. ANSWERS TO INTERROGATORIES BY M. R RY. K. R. KRISHNA MENON, AVARGAL, RETIRED SUB-JUDGE, WALLUVANAD TALUK. 1. Amongst Nayars and other high caste people, a man of the higher divi sion can have Sambandham with a woman of a lower division. 2, 3, 4 and 5. According to the original institutes of Malabar, Nayars are divided into 18 sects, between whom, except in the last 2, intermarriage was per missible ; and this custom is still found to exist, to a certain extent, both in Travan core and Cochin, This rule has however been varied by custom in British Mala bar, in Avhich a woman of a higher sect is not now permitted to form Sambandham with a man of a lower one. This however will not justify her total excommuni cation from her caste in a religious point of view, but will subject her to some social disabilities, which can be removed by her abandoning the sambandham, and paying a certain fine to the Enangans, or caste-people. The disabilities are the non-invitation of her to feasts and other social gatherings. But she cannot be prevented from entering the pagoda, from bathing in the tank, or touch ing the well &c. A Sambandham originally bad, cannot be validated by a Prayaschitham. In fact, Prayaschitham implies the expiation of sin, which can be incurred only by the violation of a religious rule. Here the rule violated is purely a social one, and not a religious one, and consequently Prayaschitham is altogether out of the place. The restriction is purely the creature of class pride, and this has been carried to such an extent as to pre vent the Sambandham of a woman with a man of her own class, among certain aristocratic families.

  • Newsletter of VOL 1, ISSUE 4 Habitat Technology Group
SEPT/OCT Official Bi-monthly Newsletter of VOL 1, ISSUE 4 Habitat Technology Group EDITOR’S CORNER It has happened again! Many parts of Kerala have been battered by heavy downpour. Apprehensions expressed by environmentalists that deluge 2018 was not going to be a once in a century disaster are proving right. We are paying a heavy price for the harm we inflicted on Mother Nature. However, we cannot just lie down and lament. Life should go on. Partly damaged or fully damaged houses should be rebuilt. We have to take care of our mothers and children. We have to create a better future for the next generation. Resilience is the answer. It is high time that we adopted resilience as a life vision. As all good things begin at home, we should adopt resilience in building houses first and foremost. Let us build homes that are resilient to the vagaries of climate. This can be achieved not by going against the nature but by learning and practising how close a harmonious relationship we can strike with it. Here in Habitat, we have always promoted nature-friendly sustainable building methods. This has been an article of faith ever since we started off on a modest scale three decades ago. Heavy rains and flash floods not only submerged many parts of the state but triggered devastating landslides in Malappuram and Wayanad districts where we lost a large number of precious lives. The landslips in places like Kavalappara in Malappuram are direct fallout of grievous harm we have caused to the ecologically-fragile Western Ghats.

S. Anandan reports on the plight of the displaced in the hills of north Kerala uneesh V., 29, walks gingerly to the tarpaulin-covered front yard of his Stiny house as if the earth would give way if he stepped on it a little firm- ly. He doesn’t seem to trust the soil be- neath his feet any longer. He lives on Muthappankunnu hill, covered with young rubber trees, in Kavalappara, which is part of the Bhoodanam colony in Pothukallu panchayat in Kerala’s Ma- lappuram district. This is where land- less tribals secured land after the Bhoo- dan movement more than six decades ago.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is an attempt to interpret the rebellion staged in 1921-22 by part of the Muslim community of the Malabar District of the Madras Presidency, a community known as the 'Moplahs' or ♦Mappillas'. Since, it is here argued, this challenge to British rule was a consequence of the impact of that power on social relations in rural Malabar starting with the earliest period of British control of the area, the genesis of the rising is traced from the cession of Malabar to the East India Company in 1792. Chapter 1 constitutes an investigation both of social relations in rural Malabar under the impact of British rule and of the limits of Moplah response under conditions in which rebellion was impracticable.
