The academic dress for matriculated undergraduates of the University shall be similar to the Scho­ lar's Gown of the Univers ity of Oxford . It shall be worn whenever the President so directs . The gown s of Bachelors shall be of black stuff. The gowns of Masters shall be of black stuff or silk. The gowns of Doctors shall be of fine scarlet cloth or silk. or black stuff or silk. The pattern of the Bachelor 's gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Bachelor 's gown. The pattern of the Master 's gown and of the Doctor 's black gown shall be similar to that of the Ox­ ford Master 's gown. except that the Doctor's black gown shall have an edging of black silk braid at the opening of the sleeve . The Doctor 's scarlet gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Doctor of Divinitys gown . , The hoods of Bachelors shall be made of black stuff. the hoods of Masters of black silk. the hoods of Docto rs of scarlet silk. They shall be full in shape and lined with the University colours of claret and white . The hoods of Bachelors shall be edged with white fur . the tippets with velvet in the colours distincti ve of the Faculty or Degree . The hoods and tippets of Masters shall be edged with velvet in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . The hoods and tippets of Doctors shall be edged with silk in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . In conferring an honorary doctor of laws degree on Paul Guy Desmarais . the university honors the person who served as its chancellor from 1979-88 - a period of important growth and de­ velopment for the institution. Dr. Desmarais began his own career with a small family enterprise in Northern Ontario . even­ tually building it into a wide-ranging apd diversilied network that is now one of the country's lstgest lirunciel orgsnizstions, His business interests include La Presse Ltee .. which he serves as chairman of the board. and Power Corporation of Canada. where he is chairman of the board . chief executive officer and chairman of the executive committee. He was a founding member and director of the Business Council on National Issues and a founder of the Canada-China Trade Council . and has participated in the Governor -General's Cana­ dian Study Conference and the Canadian Institute for International Peace and Security. He has been closely sssocisted with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. the CD. Howe Research Institute. the lnstitut de Cetdiologie de Montreal . and the Quebec -Labrador Foundation . In 1978 he was invested as an Oiiicet of the Order of Canada and in 1987 was made a Com­ panion of the Order . He earned the bachelor of commerce degree at the University of Ottawa and holds honorary degrees from a number of Canadian universities.

JAN FURST

jan Furst. who has five decades of experience in naval architecture. spent the past 13 years in Newfoundland where he played an important role in activities related to the marine environ ­ ment. He has worked closely with Memorial researchers in the engineering faculty and C-CORE . Mr . Furst has worked on many projects that have enhanced Newfoundland's research and development community including Notdco: the organization and groundwork that brought the National Research Council's Institute for Marine Dynamics to St . john 's: and the development of the naval architectural engineeringprogram in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial - the only accredited program of its kind in Canada . He served on the Royal Commission on the Ocean Ranger Marine Disaster from 1982-85: as technical director. president and chief executive officer of Nortek Engineering Inc. of St. john 's: and as owner and president of jan Furst Marine Consultants Ltd. Mr. Furst is a graduate in naval architecture and marine engineering from the Technical Univer­ sity of the Free State of Danzig (now Gdansk in Polsnd ) in 1937.

36 JAMES DONALD HATCHER

During his long association with the Department of Physiology at Queen's University, and then as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, Dr. James Donald Hatcher has had a major impact on medical education and research in Canada. He joined Queen's University's Department of Physiology in 1952. He became professor of physiology and chairman of the department, and from 1968-76 he was also associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He was active with the Defence Research Board of Canada Arctic Panel, the Canadian Physiological Society with the Medical Research Council of Canada. At Dalhousie, Dr. Hatcher was the initiator and founder of the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. During his tenure as dean of the Faculty of Medicine the Dalhousie Medical School made remarkable progress in the area of biomedical research. In 1985 he was made advisor to the president on research and technology transfer at Dalhousie University, and also was made chair of the Task Force on Chemicals in the Environment and Human Reproductive Problems in New Brunswick. Dr. Hatcher has received manyawards and honors including the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation Award for Outstanding Service and an honorary degree from Queen's University. He earned his medical and PhD degrees from the University of Western Ontario.

FRANCIS NORMAN HUGHES

Dr. Francis Norman Hughes. now dean emeritus and professor emeritus of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, was a leader in Canadian pharmacy education during his long career. First associated with the Ontario College of Pharmacy (OCP) in 1927 as a student in the two­ year course in pharmacy, he returned to that institution in 1952 as its dean. Dr. Hughes earned the PhmB from the Ontario College of Pharmacy in 1929, the BS in phar­ macy from Purdue University in 1940, and the MA in physiology from the University of Toronto in 1944. In 1952, when he became dean at OCP, the first four-year baccalaureate degrees were award­ ed. When the college turned its teaching function over to the University of Toronto, he became the first dean of the new Faculty of Pharmacy. During his two decades as dean, the faculty awarded its first degrees at the master's and doctoral levels, it moved to a location on the U. of T. campus, and hospital pharmacy residency programs were initiated. In 1967 he received the Canada Cen­ tennialMedal. He has received honorary degrees from Purdue University, Dalhousie University, University of Toronto and Queen's University. 37 KATHLEEN MARGARET MA CPHERSON

Dr. Kathleen (Kay) Macpherson . a leading spokesperson for peace and women 's issues . is well­ known across Canada for her contributions to many national . provincial and local groups and associations . Born in England . she trained as a physiotherapist at St . Thomas ' Hospital in London . After coming to Canada in 1935. she took part in establishing physiotherapy departments at several Montreal hospitals . In 1941. the outbreak of poli o took her to New Brunswick where . as the only physi otherapist in the province, she helped to establish clinics and to lecture on rehabilitative exercises . She played a key role in Women for Political Action . Voice of Women and the National Ac ­ tion Committee on the Status of Women . In 1982 she received the Order of Canada . and in 1983 she was honored by the Greek government for her work towards the restoration of democratic government in that country. She also received the Persons Award and the Toront o YWCA ho ­ nored her with the Women of Distinction Award . She received an honorary degree from York University in 1987. Her late hustsnd. Dr. C.B . Macpher son . received an honorary degree from Memorial in 1970.

DR. ROSEANN RUNTE

Dr. Roseann Runte . principal of Glendon College. Toronto. is an academic of many accom ­ plishments who has made a distinguished contribution to the Canadian universit y community. The Academic irancsis. one of the most prestigious literary institutions in France, awarded her work Feux-Soleils the Prix Francois Coppee in 1988. The collection of 48 poems is written in French; the prize was particularly significant because French is not her native language . Dr. Runte was president of Universite Sainte -Anne in Nova Scotia from 1983-88. simultane­ ously serving as honorary adjunct professor at Dalhousie Universit y. and honorary research as­ sociate at the University of New Brunswick . From 1972-74 she was a lecturer at Dalhousie University. receiving an appointment as assis ­ tant professor in 1974. She was assistant dean . Faculty of Arts and Science at Dalhousie from 1980-82. and from 1980-83 head of the university's Department of French . She received her bachelor 's degree summa cum laude from the State University of New York at New Platz in 1968, and at the University of Kansas she earned a master of arts degree in 1969. an M.Ph . in 1971 and a PhD in 1974. Acadia University conferred an honorary doctor of letters degree on Dr. Runte in 1989.

40 Convocation marks the transition from student to graduate. Graduates. collec ­ tively and individually. are part of Memorial's history and part of its future as well. The Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Association congratulates all new graduates and welcomes them into the Association as full members. As alumni they form the largest part of the University community. Branches are located in St. John·s. Clarenville. Gander. Grand Falls. Corner Brook . Labrador City. Montreal. Ottawa.
