Born in to a family of artists, Rembrandt Bugatti is the third child of (1856-1940) and Teresa Lorioli, as well as grandson of . His father Carlo was an established Art Nouveau designer of furniture and jewelry, as well as fabrics, ceramics and metals. His older brother Ettore was the founder of the famous car maker of the same name.

Rembrandt Bugatti has the opportunity to grow in a culturally stimulating environment for the continuous contact with the artists who frequent the family home: Giacomo Puccini, Ruggero Leoncavallo, the sculptor Ercole Rosa who, his godfather, proposed his unusual first name. The Russian sculptor has particular influence on the young Rembrandt, who was already interested in sculpture early on.

He studied at the Brera Academy and exhibited his first works in Venice and then in Paris where the family moved in 1902.

Rembrandt Bugatti signs a contract to work and sell his bronzes with Adrian Aurelien Hébrard, owner of the homonymous gallery and art foundry.

Of a solitary nature, he remains on the edge of the artistic environment, while his love for nature and fauna leads him to spend a lot of time in a Parisian nature reserve near the Jardin des Plantes. The original Dancing Elephant, modeled in 1904, in the 1920s will be adopted by his brother Ettore as a symbol of the Bugatti Royale.

In 1907 he established his studio in , near the Zoo where he was allowed to study closely the characteristics and habits of exotic animals and to model directly live. Between 1907 and 1914 he thus created a series of sculptures of animals such as elephants, panthers and lions which received the favor of the public. In 1911 the Hébrard gallery successfully exhibited an exhibition of over one hundred sculptures.

The outbreak of the war in 1914 provoked the first effects of a depression in him, aggravated by the discomfort for the killing of the much studied zoo animals. He dedicates himself to the assistance of the wounded with the organization of the Antwerp Red Cross, but contracts tuberculosis. He returned to Italy to join the Army, but was reformed. On his return to Paris he finds himself alone and in serious economic difficulties since the war has meanwhile provoked the crisis of the artistic market. He takes his life in his Montparnasse studio by inhaling gas. He was not yet 32 years old. https://www.anticswiss.com/en/fine-art-antiques/after-rembrandt-bugatti-1884-1916-nubian-lion-in-bronze-20331
