Featured Men's Singles Quarter-Finals 2016 US OPEN Flushing Meadows, New York, USA | August 29 – September 11, 2016 Draw Size: S-128, D-64 | $46.3 million | Hard www.usopen.org DAY NINE MEDIA NOTES | Tuesday, September 6, 2016 FEATURED MEN’S SINGLES QUARTER-FINALS – TOP HALF Arthur Ashe Stadium [10] Gael Monfils (FRA) vs [24] Lucas Pouille (FRA) Monfils Leads 1-0 [1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs [9] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) Djokovic Leads 15-6 DAY NINE HIGHLIGHTS It’s been more than 33 years since Yannick Noah lifted La Coupe des Mousquetaires at Roland Garros. The trophy itself is symbolic of a golden era in French tennis, when Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet and Rene Lacoste combined to capture 18 major singles championships. That was nearly a century ago, and though Noah remains the last Frenchman to win a Grand Slam men’s singles title, three modern-day musketeers are rewriting history at the 2016 US Open. No. 9 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 10 seed Gael Monfils and No. 24 seed Lucas Pouille will play inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, marking the first time in the Open Era that three Frenchmen have reached the quarter-finals of the same Grand Slam event. Marcel Bernard, Yvon Petra and Pierre Pellizza were the last trio to do so at Roland Garros in 1947, and it hasn’t happened in New York since the 1927 US Championships featured Borotra, Brugnon and Lacoste in the quarter-finals. One year earlier at Forest Hills, Borotra, Cochet and Lacoste advanced to the 1926 US Championships semi-finals, marking the last time that more than one Frenchman was among the final four players at this event. It occurred most recently at a major when Arnaud Clement rallied from two sets down to beat Sebastien Grosjean in the 2001 Australian Open semi-finals. Only one player can prevent a Frenchman from reaching the US Open final, and he’s dashed the nation’s hopes repeatedly in recent years. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is 52-1 against French players since sweeping Monfils and Gilles Simon to lead Serbia to the 2010 Davis Cup title. Facing Frenchmen, Djokovic has won 15 straight matches overall and 21 in a row at majors. Those streaks would be longer were it not for Tsonga, Djokovic’s quarter- final opponent on Tuesday. Tsonga avenged his loss to Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open final by beating him in Melbourne two years later. Also among Tsonga’s six wins over Djokovic is a 6-2, 6-2 victory at 2014 ATP Masters 1000 Toronto, which snapped the Serbian superstar’s 37-match unbeaten run against French opponents. Tuesday’s other quarter-final is an All-French affair between Monfils and Pouille. In their only prior meeting, Monfils rallied from two sets down to beat Pouille at the 2015 Australian Open. Though he has lost his last six Grand Slam quarter-finals, Monfils has been nearly unbeatable of late. He is 18-2 since Wimbledon and has swept 16 straight sets since the Rio Olympics. Pouille was 2-9 at majors before breaking through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The 22-year-old Pouille has won each of his last three matches in five sets, including the biggest victory of his career over World No. 5 Rafael Nadal and a comeback against qualifier Marco Chiudinelli during which the Swiss served for the match in the third set. Pouille is the first player to win three consecutive five-setters at a Grand Slam tournament since Marcel Granollers at the 2013 US Open. The last player to contest four consecutive five-setters at a major was Dominik Hrbaty at the 2006 Australian Open, with Robby Ginepri doing the same at the 2005 US Open. Both Hrbaty and Ginepri lost their fourth five-setter. Albert Costa is the last player to win four five-setters non-consecutively at 2003 Roland Garros. No player in the Open Era has won four consecutive five-setters at a major, nor has any player in the Open Era won four consecutive or non-consecutive five-setters at the US Open. • WRC Case Brief: Lacoste Linked to Factory in China That Reportedly Uses Forced Labor
WRC Case Brief: Lacoste Linked to Factory in China that Reportedly Uses Forced Labor The Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) has determined that the global clothing brand, Lacoste, produced apparel at a factory that has been identified by independent researchers as using forced labor. The factory, Yili Zhuo Wan Garment Manufacturing, is located in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China. This part of the XUAR is home to members of the Kazakh ethnic group, one of the Muslim minority peoples that are targets of the Chinese government’s brutal campaign of repression in the region. The factory makes leather gloves and other products for export. Its address is Home Textile Park, Number 5, Yining County, Yili.1 Lacoste, with $2.2 billion in annual revenue, sells apparel in 120 countries and operates its own retail stores around the world, as well as boutiques within larger department stores.2 Lacoste sponsors a number of leading professional tennis players, including number-one-ranked Novak Djokovic. The brand is owned by the Swiss holding company, Maus Frères. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a US-based research and policy organization which issued a widely-read report last year on forced labor in the XUAR, documented the abuses suffered by a woman who was forced by the Chinese government to work at Yili Zhuo Wan Garment.3 According to CSIS: After subjecting the woman to extra- judicial detention in a series of internment camps, the government, upon releasing her from detention, forced the woman to report for work at Yili Zhuo Wan Garment.

  • NOVAK DJOKOVIC: the NEW CROCODILE René Lacoste and Novak Djokovic
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: THE NEW CROCODILE René Lacoste and Novak Djokovic. Two legends who share the same values of Fair- Play, tenacity and elegance. In 1933 tennis player and inventor René Lacoste, nicknamed the Crocodile for the tenacity he displayed on the court, revolutionized the world of sportswear by creating the LACOSTE L.12.12 Polo shirt. This garment’s unique fabric, the cotton petit piqué, allowed the 1930s tennis players greater freedom of movement. The LACOSTE L12.12 Polo shirt has since become the icon of a brand, symbolizing French elegance and timeless style the world over. Today Novak Djokovic becomes the LACOSTE style ambassador, not only on but also off the tennis court. His relaxed elegance and inventiveness are a perfect match for the French brand’s DNA and its sports-inspired creations. LACOSTE has developed for Novak Djokovic an eponymous clothing line to be worn on the court. These outfits have been specially designed to kit out the champion during the Grand Slam’s tournaments as well as dress him for the other tournaments of the season. The Novak Djokovic collection is a line of performance products that fuse functionality with style. This wardrobe, perfect for the players who, like Novak Djokovic, pay attention to all the details of a game, will be available in LACOSTE boutiques, starting May 2017. All the collection items were engineered from materials handpicked for their quality and performance. Every detail is geared towards comfort: ergonomic stitching prevents chaffing while the cuts bring about ease of movement. Novak Djokovic’s signature is printed on the left sleeve of the polo shirt whose graphics are inspired by the lines of a tennis court.

  • Physics of Tennis Lesson 4 Energy
The Physics of Tennis Lesson 4: Energy changes when a ball interacts with different surfaces Unit Overview: In this unit students continue to develop understanding of what can be at first glance a complicated system, the game of tennis. In this activity we have taken two components of the game of tennis, the ball and court, to see if we can model the interactions between them. This activity focuses on the energy interactions between ball and court. Objectives: Students will be able to- • Describe what forces interact when the ball hits a surface. • Understand what changes occur when potential and kinetic energy conversion is taking place within a system. At the high school level students should include connections to the concept of “work =FxD” and calculations of Ek = ½ 2 mv and Ep =mgh according to the conservation of energy principal. • Identify the types of energy used in this system.
