FROM OUR (RETIRING) VICAR I came to Gosberton in late March 2006. My last day in office here will be 3rd October 2021. I notice it’s been common to summarise things in numbers, so thought I’d try it as follow! (All figures estimated!): Sunday services conducted 800 School assemblies 280 Funerals conducted 403 Weddings conducted 62 Christenings 124 PCC meetings attended 140 Appeared on TV 5 Flower Festivals 14 Local radio 12 Emails received 28000+

In 2006 letters were possibly as frequent as emails. 50 years ago, the vicar here would have had many more weddings and christenings and funerals too. A clear statement of change forced upon us by the media. But the above does not tell all the story of what I am called to do. I’ve had a few thousand meetings and conversations, people in trouble helped and supported, and then there’s the vital ministry of prayer too - as a daily discipline. A priority on first getting up in the morning and usually I have over 50 people on my daily prayer list at any time including those who need healing or encouragement. I don’t just believe or feel prayer works as I know it does and certainly believe in miracles which have been evident in my time here. I spend a few minutes praying half-way through a day if time permits and always in the evening too. I would have loved to retire amidst happier days for us all. Who would have thought we would have seen churches ordered to be

Wedding Bells at Quadring It was Saturday, July 3rd and six enthusiastic ringers promptly arrived at noon at St Margaret’s church to ring for the wedding of Chloe Jones and Ryan Collier. I always enjoy these occasions particularly where, as at Quadring, the ringing room is at the base of the tower and affords an extensive view of nave and chancel so one is able to enjoy the happy ceremony, perhaps recalling one’s own, now a distant memory. I think our ringing did these fine toned bells justice despite the stretchy ropes of No’s 2 and 3 bells as on leaving the church we received compliments from several of the guests which are always appreciated. But what comprises these six bells and what do we know about their history? Writing in 1882 North tells us there were four bells inscribed as follows: LAMBERTS TIMBER SALES 1. Thomas Norris Made Mee, 1638 2. T. Osborn Fecit 1788 65 Clough Road, Gosberton Risegate 3. In anno oni 1619 Spalding PE11 4JW 4. In noc ihu rpi 1619

No’s 3 and 4 were both cast by Henry 11 For all your DIY timber requirements. Oldfield at his Long Row Foundry, Nottingham 2’X2’, 3’X2’, 4’X2’, T&G, Decking, Ply and are surprisingly good toned bells. No 1 is, of course a product of the Stamford Foundry, its site commemorated today by the Tobie Norris Pub, while No 2 was BIG SELECTION, CHEAPEST cast at Osborn’s Downham Market Foundry, also long gone but LOCALLY, GIVE US A TRY! the site is located by the aptly named “Soundings Alley”. North also mentions what appear to be four earlier bells, the largest of Contact Simon Lambert on 07771 928477 these carrying the inscription “Virgo Coronato dvc nos ad Regna Beata” which translates as “O crowned virgin lead us to the Or 01775 750100 blessed realms” Perhaps this refers to Queen Elizabeth 1, but

what became of these bells is at present unknown. The next major work here was in 1946 when the firm of John Taylor & Co of Loughborough added two smaller bells completing the six bells now in the tower, the largest weighing 9 3/4 cwts and Charity No. 1068857 sounding the note F sharp. Interestingly a modern bell of this Serving older people in the Spalding District since 2000 note would weigh 12 to 13 cwts, considerably heavier than the The Meadows Day Centre works to promote the wellbeing of all older Oldfield bell, which although light for its note, does sound well. people and to make later life a more fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Lincolnshire Churches Trust Ride and Stride 2021

This sponsored annual event will take place on Saturday 11th September. Despite the restrictions that were in place last year a good number of our regular participants enjoyed visiting churches and chapels around the Alford area of Lincolnshire.

Further details are displayed in our churches and if you are interested in joining up with us on the day please contact me on 01775 840803

Over the many years that this sponsored Ride has taken place we usually manage to find new places to visit thanks to our friends who plan the route in advance. I wonder where we will be heading this September!

Gosberton WI Gosberton WI meets in the Public Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, starting at 7.30 pm. We normally have a short business meeting, an interesting speaker or demonstration and refreshments before heading home.

We get involved with various issues, nationally and those of a local interest. The issue of single use plastics is always uppermost and following the recent national pandemic, we are concerned about mental health problems and loneliness.

Members have been enjoying “meetings in a bag” – a way of keeping in touch. Each bag containing a newsletter, an activity or craft and a little treat.

Following the enforced break from meetings due to “Covid”, we are hopeful that the first face-to-face meeting since lockdown will be a “welcome back” evening in August, following Government guidelines. Everyone is sure to have lots of catching up to do. If anyone would like to join us that evening, they will be very welcome.

Plans are being made for a harvest meeting in September and a “spooky” themed meeting for October.

For more information ring our president, Rosemary on 01775 640573 or our secretary Jeannette on 01775 841779, or why not visit the national website www.thewi.org.uk

What a rollercoaster this past year has been! March. What has never failed to astound us, is how well the children have coped with this pandemic. They have shown resilience, determination, hope and above all have smiled throughout.

At Quadring Primary, we have done our best to ensure that we have been able to provide the quality of education and learning opportunities that our children are used to, whilst still keeping everyone safe. We have shared so many wonderful experiences and created so many amazing memories – and we continue to look for the positives in all that we do.

Not only have we been so proud of the children for working so hard to make the wonderful progress they have made, and being so engaged in Home Learning, but also for giving 100% in all other aspects of school life, as this has looked so different and has become the new normal for them all. We have managed to take part in many activities and events to improve the children’s and staff wellbeing and we haven’t let the pandemic take away the fun and laughter that we encourage in our school. From getting active with all of our sports initiatives, taking part in Mr Bubbleworks Science workshops, enjoying a Santa Dash in the playground, encouraging musical talent through lessons and also through taking part in the Young Voices Big Sing World Record breaking event, holding our very own Quadring Staff Masked Singer to support Red Nose Day, development of our International school links with GEMS Academy in Dubai, having a technology free ‘Earth Day’, developing our own vegetable garden in Reception outdoor area, bringing learning to life using 3D technology, alongside many other wider curriculum days and fundraising events, to name but a few.

It has been wonderful to see our school and local community supporting each other from sharing videos of our school Christmas Nativity with local care homes to bring a smile to their faces when they needed it, to engaging in community projects to clean up our local environment supported by Quadring Parish Council, and the more recent Quadring Yard Sale led by members of our local community to help raise funds for the school. Quadring Staff, children and Governors would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone in our local community who have supported our school throughout this year. A very special thank you to Gosberton Church Community for the support that they have provided for our families and those in other local communities through their wonderful food bank. 30 19
