Here You Have a Complete List of All New Arrivals in the Music Section of Infomaden in April-October 2013 Here you have a complete list of all new arrivals in the music section of Infomaden in April-October 2013. Please note that most items are only available in 1-2 copies! LP’S ACTIVE MINDS / SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS – split (self-released, 2013) Two sort of legendary bands from England, both playing high energetic noisy hardcore punk with political lyrics since 1980’s. This is a one-sided 12” released in a limited number of 255 copies for their common European tour in July 2013. ACTIVE MINDS – “Turn Back the Tide of Bigotry” (Loony Tunes, 2012) Another album from the two 'wimps' of Scarborough who play fast angry political hardcore punk and have done for the last 25 years! As usual comes with a HUGE booklet with lyrics and explanations. ANTIDOTUM – “Jedna plaga ludzka plaga” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2010) Raging Polish punk with a female singer, and a drummer who played on the 1st EL BANDA album. Faster, more aggressive version of POST REGIMENT. BRIVIDO / PUBLIC DISGRACE – split (DIY cooperation, 2013) 2x fast hardcore punk from Croatia, Brivido from Rijeka, Public Disgrace from Pula, with members of NULLA OSTA etc. DÁŠA FON FLAŠA – “Mrchožrút” (DIY cooperation, 2013) Slovak singer-songwriter with clear punk rock roots and smart, yet often funny lyrics. This vinyl reissue of his 2011 CD was released by his friends as a birthday present, huh! DEZERTER – “Underground out of Poland” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2010) Classical compilation of the early material (1984-85) by this legendary Polish punk band. Originally released by Maximumrockandroll. Comes with a large folded insert including all lyrics and their English translations – and these have always been damn fucking great! DEZERTER – “Jeszcze zywy człowiek” 2LP (Pasazer, 2011) One of the most acknowledged Polish punk bands ever – two records containing their live show at the legendary 1984 Jarocin festival. Originally released as a tape back in the 80’s, first time on vinyl. DEZERTER – “Blasfemia” (Pasazer, 2013) Re-release of their 1992 album, still punk/hc, more complicated than their 80’s material. Still awesome though! DEZERTER – “Jak powstrzymałem III wojnę światową, czyli nieznana historia Dezertera” 2LP (Pasazer, 2009) Collection of rare unreleased material from years 1991-1993, originally released on CD and tape in 1993. Contains interesting early rehearsal sessions as well as later live and studio stuff. Double LP on coloured vinyl. DEZERTER – “Ile procent duszy?” (Pasazer, 2009) Re-release of their 1994 album. DEZERTER – “Nielegalny zabójca czasu” (Pasazer, 2010) Re-release of their 2004 album. DEZERTER – “Prawo do bycia idiota” (Pasazer, 2010) Their latest album so far. Incredible 4th decade for Dezerter and still that great punk with smart political lyrics! THE FIGHT – “Maldicion” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2009) One of the most active Polish bands of the last few years, combining uncompromising socio-political message with raging punk sound and melodic parts at the same time. 12 fast, fierce hardcore songs, sometimes even with a bit of crusty touch and with passionate female vocals. Comes on coloured vinyl with poster and a fat booklet with lyrics and commentaries. INKWYZYCJA – “Na własne podobieństwo” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2013) Reissue of a classic Polish hardcore album, btw. the very first independent record ever released in the country (originally in 1991). NULLA OSTA – “Bastard Music for Bastard People” (DIY cooperation, 2013) Newest LP by well known HC/crust/punk with double bass from Pula, Croatia. Clear transparent vinyl and front cover artwork by Doomsday Graphics. POST REGIMENT – “s/t” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2010) Vinyl reissue of one of the most amazing punk records ever made in Poland. Classic album from 1992 – smart hc/punk with amazing melancholic/melodic female vocals, great sound and poetic lyrics. Someone had told me that when they played in EKH back in the days, everyone from the stage to the stairway was dancing. No wonder... POST REGIMENT – “Czarzły” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2010) Re-release of their later 1996 album, still the same amazing original punk, yet this time more hardcore, with a bit of crust influence - more d-beat rhythms and rawer vocals. PROSPERITY DENIED / SIX SCORE – split (self-released, 2013) Grindcore with some touch of metal, from Linz and Vienna. RADIOLOKÁTOR / BLACK MARKET FETUS – split (Dead Heroes Bros., 2010) Czech thrash metal project with members of GRIDE and LAHAR with lyrics about chilli X HC/thrash/grind from Iowa. REPRESIÓN – “s/t” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2011) Another raging angry political hardcore punk from Spain! Another good one! THE SHINING – “Rise of the Degenerates” (Dead Heroes Bros., 2013) Latest album by Dutch thrashers. Limited edition on yellow vinyl. STREGESTI – „s/t“ (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2013) Cool crust/hardcore from Southern Poland with both female and male vocals. Some „epic crust“ parts, some local punk heritage, but mainly just speeding pissed-off hardcore! Can you mix bands like POST REGIMENT, CATHARSIS and DROPDEAD in one band? Here it seems to be working perfectly! TOMORROW’S HELL / TUMMO - split (Dead Heroes Bros., 2013) Czech metallic crust with clear Swedish influence by members of MASS GENOCIDE PROCESS X Aggressive stoner/HC for fans of BLACK COBRA, EYEHATEGOD, HIGH ON FIRE etc. Colored vinyl + download card. TUMMO – “s/t” (Dead Heroes Bros., 2011) Debut LP of a new band from Brno (Czech). Ex/current members of MORE BAD NEWS, EMA CAMELIA and GOSPEL OF THE FUTURE. Playing down-tuned hardcore/punk/stoner with personal/political lyrics and DIY attitude. White vinyl + download card. UNFIXED – “Punk Chaos Disorder” (Nikt Nic Nie Wie, 2013) New band by members of MEINHOF from London. Still noisy hardcore punk, but this time less crusty and more melodic. However, still fucking loud and angry! v/a – “Communal Grave” 10” + fanzine (Dead Heroes Bros., 2013, zine 84 pgs., English) Brand new international power violence compilation with songs by CONTROLLED EXISTENCE, GETS WORSE, BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA, MANGLE, PRÜGELKNABE, THE AFTERNOON GENTLEMEN, VILE INTENT and THE SHINING. Comes with a great zine in format of a 7“, that includes interviews with all the bands involved, some vegan recipes and great photos. v/a – „Spalte Brno na prach“ (DIY cooperation, 2008) Or „Burn Brno to Ashes“ – a local raw hc/punk compilation from Brno (Czech rep.) with 12 bands raging from old school hardcore punk, through raw crust punk to grind / fastcore. SEE YOU IN HELL, FESTA DESPERATO, MAD PIGS, RISPOSTA, PRIPYAT, CORE BASTARDS, ZEMĚŽLUČ and others... Includes a thick 36-page booklet. v/a – „Brno stále v plamenech“ (DIY cooperation, 2012) 5 years after „Spalte Brno na prach“ comes a second part of a local raw hc/punk compilation from Brno (Czech rep.), this time called „Brno still in flames“. 14 bands including FESTA DESPERATO, BOY, TUMMO, 6 MAS, RISPOSTA, MAD PIGS or SEE YOU IN HELL. Comes with a 84 pages thick fanzine! EP’S ACTIVE MINDS – “Bury the Past: Build the Future” (Loony Tunes, 2011) First Active Minds release in years. Side A kicks off with three more melodic numbers, side B then hits you with 10 ragers, pure anger. As always, you get a booklet with lyrics and explanations. BETON / SKELETON – split (Ultima Ratio, 2013) Evil metal/crust from Bratislava vs. Canadian raw crust punk shit. • East and West As the Basic Concepts of Solidarity 1980-1989
East and West as the Basic Concepts of Solidarity 1980-1989 Bronisław Swiderski A number of both Polish and foreign commentators conceive Solidarity as an alternative to both the ideology and the practice of the communist system. Books by historians, political scientists and journalists, for example by Alain Touraine (1982), Timothy Garton Ash (1983), Jerzy Holzer (1984), Lopiński, Moskit and Wilk (1989) or Georges Mink (1989) emphasize the conflict between Solidarity and the government. The authors see it as a struggle for freedom, democracy and liberalism against dictatorship. Analyses by Roman Laba (1991) and by Lawrence Goodwyn (1991) distinguish simultaneous confrontations on two different levels: one between the working class and the Leninist state, the other within Solidarity itself: the working class and the intellectual ideologues. Sergiusz Kowalski (1990) offers an interesting discussion of the distinction between tradition and the past in Solidarity ideology, as well as of the trade-union's "reconstruction" of the Polish tradition as an anti-communist one. Barbara Törnquist-Plewa (1992) points out the confrontation between different ideas which arose as Solidarity appropriated "Polish" religion, history and tradition. The official system was thus left unrooted in the Polish past. Many scholars, then, considered Solidarity to be a political and ideological alternative to the communist system, and saw the situation as the "new world" fighting l'ancien regime. But did the ideas of Solidarity and their application in fact constitute a real alternative to the official structures? It seems that more of the actual facts indicate that Solidarity should be described as complementary to Slavica Lundensia 14, 1995, pp 43-53 Bronisław Swiderski and not as an alternative to the official Poland of the time.

  • Polish Punk Rock Scene in the 1980S
2.7. “Fallen fallen is Babylon”. Polish punk rock scene in the 1980s Piotr Zanko1 Abstract The 1980s were in Poland a time of crucial changes occurring in society. It was when Solidarnosc, a trade union and a democratic opposition movement, emerged, and when the communist regime introduced martial law to stop democratic transformation. Poland faced economic crisis and almost a million of its citizens chose emigration, both because of economic and political reasons. In the background Poland experienced then an extraordinary boom for rock music. It was also a time of huge popularity of punk rock – crude, uncompromising music. In my article I want to bring nearer a production of chosen bands of Polish punk rock music from the 1980s, among them Dezerter, TZN XENNA, Brygada Kryzys, Smierc Kliniczna, Siekiera, Moskwa. I will focus especially on selection of the lyrics of these bands. I will show how these bands criticized the social reality of that time, and what alternative visions they created in their artistic production. After Stephen Duncombe (2002), I assume that Polish punk rock music in the 1980s was indeed “a haven in a heartless world”, a way of escaping from politics, as well as a means to set free a feeling of discontent with dull reality, but on the other side it created, in spite of the censorship, some kind of a “free space”, a place where new language and new meanings could emerge, as well as where communities might be built. Keywords: Polish punk rock, cultural resistance, DIY, communism Poland after World War II became a satellite country of the Soviet Union, but in the 1980s it experienced important social changes.
