Singh: Bringing Fairness to Extradition Hearings: Proposing a Revised Ev BRINGING FAIRNESS TO EXTRADITION HEARINGS: PROPOSING A REVISED EVIDENTIARY BAR FOR POLITICAL DISSIDENTS I. INTRODUCTION "Physical death I do not fear; death of conscience is the real death."' The right to self-determination is the common language, the common voice, the common struggle of all revolutionaries. It is a motivation that speaks to truth, justice, and ultimately peace. Yet, shrouded by fear, the voices of revolutionaries are being suppressed.2 For security, simplicity, and clarity, we label those who stand against repressive regimes as terrorists, without distinction, without contemplation. Fearful of being a haven to alleged terrorists, the United States is sending those who seek refuge from repressive regimes back to their torturers.3 The willingness to embrace voices of 1. CYNTHIA MAHMOOD, A SEA OF ORANGE: WRITINGS ON THE SIKHS AND INDIA 23-24 (2001) (quoting Jamail Singh Bhindranwale who led the movement for Sikh civil and human rights and vociferously protested the second class status of Sikhs and other minorities in India). 2. See generally John Patrick Groarke, Revolutionaries Beware: The Erosion of the Political Offense Exception Under the 1986 United States-United Kingdom Sup- plementary Extradition Treaty, 136 U. PA. L. REV. 1515 (1988) (arguing that the United States amended its extradition treaties with other Western countries in order to facilitate the extradition of alleged terrorists); see also Susie Alegre, European Arrest Warrants: A Lapse in Justice, INT'L HERALD TRIBUNE, Feb. 2, 2004, avail- able at http://www.iht.com/articles/2004/02/02/edalegre-ed3-php (noting that im- mediately after September 11, 2001, the European Arrest Warrant emerged which did away with "messy extradition procedures" among EU countries).

Ordinance passed to shield convicted Lawmakers from disqualification should be torn up and thrown away: Rahul Gandhi By : INVC Team Published On : 27 Sep, 2013 07:54 PM IST INVC, Delhi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi dropped a bombshell on Friday by saying that the ordinance passed by his cabinet to shield convicted lawmakers from disqualification "is a complete nonsense" and that "it should be torn up and thrown away."His statement comes after reports of a growing unease in the Congress over the ordinance started doing the rounds. Union minister Milind Deora and Congress leader Anil Shastri have already gone public with their reservations on the ordinance. Even senior Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh has called for a consensus. Gandhi made his statement after making a surprise brief appearance at a meet-the-press programme of his party's general secretary Ajay Maken at the Press Club in the national capital. "Now, I will tell you what is my opinion on the ordinance. It is complete nonsense, it should be torn up and thrown away. It is my personal opinion," he said. Rahul also stated that the argument given in "my organisation" is that "we need to do this because of political considerations. Everybody is doing this. The Congress does this, the BJP does this, the Samajwadi Party, the JD(U) does this.""It is time to stop this nonsense, political parties, mine and all others....If you want to fight corruption in the country whether it is Congress Party or BJP, we cannot continue making these small compromises. Because if we make these small compromises, then we compromise everywhere.

Tarlochan Singh Gill / Canada Centre Publications, 1996 / 1996 / History of the Sikhs History of the Sikhs The Illustrated History of the Sikhs The Sikhs The Sikhs : Their Journey Of Five Hundred Years The Heritage of the Sikhs The Destiny of the Sikhs Political Ideology Of The Sikhs Sikhs call their homeland Khalistan. Nearly all Sikhs are descendants of ancestors that were originally Hindus rather than Muslims. Many are Jats (a farming people that have a history of standing up to persecution). Until the Indian government invasion of the Golden Temple in 1984 many Sikhs didnâ™t even regard themselves as belonging to a distinct religious community. Sikhism has an importance far beyond those numbers because Sikhs have played a disproportionately large role in the armed forces and public affairs in India for the last 400 years. Although most Indian Sikhs (79 percent) remain c The history of Sikhism started with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru in the fifteenth century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The religious practices were formalised by Guru Gobind Singh Ji on 13 April 1699. The latter baptised five persons from different social backgrounds to form Khalsa (ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ). The first five, Pure Ones, then baptised Gobind Singh into the Khalsa fold. This gives the order of Khalsa, a history of around 300 years. Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak Dev towards the end of the fifteenth century. This great holy man was born in 1469 A.D. A study of history of the period reveals that Bhakti Movement was in full swing in India then and religious leaders of various traditions were engaged in disseminating their message throughout the country.
