2017-18 SHARKS TEAM NOTES: OUTSHOOTING…San Jose was outshot by Vegas on 11/24, marking just the sixth time this season a team has outshot the Sharks. Games in which the Sharks have failed to outshoot their opponent, opponents have outshot the Sharks by an average of 7.16 shots per game and yet the Sharks hold a 4-2 record and have outscored opponents 20-13.

HEY SHORTY, IT’S YO BIRTHDAY…Chris Tierney scored two shorthanded goals while Logan Couture added one as well as San Jose tied a franchise record with three shorthanded tallies in a single game on 11/11 vs. VAN. Tierney scored both of his on the same, five-minute major penalty, one into the empty net and one on a penalty . He became the third player in Sharks history to score two shorthanded goals in a single game, joining Marco Sturm (10/14/00) and Jamie Baker (1/6/96).

San Jose’s only previous game with three shorthanded goals for was against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on 10/18/96.

AMONGST LEGENDS…Joe Thornton recorded his 1,400th career point on 11/1 vs. Nashville, becoming just the 20th player in NHL history to record 1,400 points. Thornton is only the second active player to reach 1,400 points (Jaromir Jagr) and trails Dale Hawerchuk by 8 points for 19th place.

0 TO 100…Peter DeBoer recorded his 100th win with the Sharks on 11/4 vs. ANA, becoming just the fourth head coach in Sharks history to reach the 100-win plateau. He joins Todd McLellan, Ron Wilson and Darryl Sutter in the 100-win club with San Jose, and this is the third team DeBoer has recorded 100 or more wins with (Florida/New Jersey).

BLOCK PARTY…Sharks defenseman Joakim Ryan blocked nine shots on 11/1 vs. Nashville, setting a Sharks franchise record for most blocked shots in a single game, besting the previous total of eight, reached twice (Vlasic/Braun). In addition to the team record, Ryan’s nine blocked shots also set an NHL record for most blocked shots by a rookie skater in a single game. The previous high of eight was recorded 13 times, with Winnipeg’s Julian Melchiori the last to accomplish the feat (3/24/17 vs. Anaheim).

GOOD BOYS…The Sharks played their 14th penalty-free game in team history on 10/30 vs. Toronto, and their first such contest since 2/18/17 at Arizona. 11 of those 14 instances have come since the 2009-10 season, and the Sharks have played exactly one penalty free game in each of Peter DeBoer’s three years as head coach. San Jose ranks T-7th in the NHL in times shorthanded (63).

JAKE, FROM STATE FARM…Joel Ward scored an empty net “insurance” goal on 10/30 vs. Toronto, his first goal of the season. It proved to be the game-winning goal after Toronto added another tally later in the game. Ward’s empty net, game-winner was the sixth such goal in Sharks history (courtesy of Darin Stephens).

AMONG THE LEADERS…The Sharks rank in the top third of the NHL in several key categories (as of 11/23/17): Faceoff win percentage (52.1%, 6th) Penalty kill percentage (89.7%, 1st) Shots taken per game (33.1, T-9th) Shots allowed per game (28.3, 1st) Goals allowed per game (2.20, 1st)

In addition, the Sharks penalty kill has grown quite formidable as of late. Aside from allowing three power play goals on opening night against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Sharks have killed 61 of 67 penalties (91.0%) over the last 20 games, leading the league over that span. Their current percentage eclipses the franchise-best (86.2%) they set during the 2000-01 season.

LATE GEMS…Joakim Ryan made his NHL debut on 10/12 vs. Buffalo, becoming just the seventh player selected in the seventh round of the 2012 NHL Draft (198th overall) to have played in an NHL contest, and the third-latest player selected in that draft to appear in an NHL game. San Jose currently has six players on its roster selected in the sixth round or later (Dylan DeMelo & Kevin Labanc in the sixth round and Joe Pavelski, Justin Braun, & Ryan in the seventh, as well as Jannik Hansen in the 9th round by VAN in 2004).

500 FROM THE BACK-END…Brent Burns tallied his 500th career point, an assist, on Logan Couture’s power-play tally on 10/4 vs. Philadelphia. He became the first defenseman and just the 20th player overall from his 2003 draft class to reach the 500 point plateau. Burns also became just the third active blueliner to reach 500 points, joining fellow Norris Trophy winners Zdeno Chara and Duncan Keith.
