2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT CancerCare Foundation DEAR FRIENDS: raises funds exclusively for CancerCare I am pleased to present the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Manitoba (CCMB). Since 2000 the Annual Report for the year ending March 31, 2014, on behalf of the Board of Directors. As you will see in the pages ahead, it Foundation has donated more than was a remarkable year and I want to start by saying - Thank You!

Foundation’s success. This was a year of transition for our partner CancerCare Manitoba. We said goodbye and thank you to Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal who returned to private life after serving for a de- cade as President and CEO of CCMB. Dr. Dhaliwal was an ambassador, teacher and friend who made a profound difference in the Foundation’s growth and success. We welcomed Dr. Sri Navaratnam as the new President and CEO of CCMB and look for- ward to building a strong and successful partnership with her in the years to come.

Forecasts show cancer is on the rise in Manitoba and we know this means more op- erating funds will be needed to support our partner CancerCare Manitoba. We also expect the new cancer building announced by government in 2011 to move closer to reality. This too will require the Foundation’s financial support.

While the Foundation is well positioned to meet these challenges, we will need the collective will of our donors, partners and all Manitobans to succeed. We look for- ward to working together to reduce the impact of cancer on all Manitobans.

Yours truly,

On the cover: Three year-old cancer survivor , Chair Nicolina Ammazzini. Read her inspiring story CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Board of Directors on page 21.

2 DEAR DONORS AND PARTNERS: Because of our donors we are able This was an exceptional year highlighted by record-breaking to fund the many extra programs at achievements in fundraising that allowed the Foundation to CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) that donate more than $5.7 million to support over forty projects at CancerCare Manitoba. We have highlighted a few of these allow our patients to experience projects in this report and the complete list can be found on the Foundation’s website. another emotion. HOPE. This success was only possible thanks to the ongoing generos- ity of Manitobans who donated their money, time and expertise. We have provided Janice Filmon, Chair the names of the year’s top donors, listed all community fundraising events regis- tered with the Foundation, and recognized corporate sponsors. While we only list these supporters, we are indebted and extend our heartfelt thanks to the thousands of others who supported our cause.

In the pages ahead you will read the story of Nicolina Ammazzini, a three-year old cancer survivor treated at CancerCare Manitoba. She jumps, slides and plays like most other kids her age and is expected to live a healthy, normal life. Her story inspires all of us.

We share Nicolina’s story to illustrate why the Foundation’s work is so important and why donations and support from thousands of Manitobans make a real difference for real people. Her story shines a light on the Foundation’s ultimate goal of reduc- ing the impact of cancer on all Manitobans.

Since the year 2000, the Foundation has donated more than $85 million to CCMB to support prevention, early detection, breakthrough research, equipment purchase, state of the art treatment, and support for patients and families. While we are extremely proud of these results we know more must be done to keep ahead of this terrible disease.

At the Foundation we have worked hard to earn the respect and trust of our donors, volunteers and partners. We are sincerely thankful for your support this year and look forward to your ongoing support in the years ahead. And, if you are only now getting to know CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, we ask for your support today and in the months and years ahead.

Yours truly,

Annitta Stenning, President and CEO

The Foundation’s strategy is to support CancerCare YOUR Manitoba’s strategic priorities by funding programs and DOLLARS services that may not be eligible for government funding. As stewards of your important donations, the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Board of Directors considers peer-reviewed research and program proposals from CCMB that fit with their strategic plan. Funding requests are rigorously reviewed by the Foundation’s Projects, Grants & Awards Committee and, if approved, are forwarded to the Finance Committee and then to the Board. Chart at right shows AT WORK how the grants were allocated this fiscal year.

This fiscal year CancerCare Manitoba Foundation provided approximately $5.7 million in grants to CancerCare Manitoba to support more than forty specific projects. The complete list can be found on the Foundation’s website www.CancerCareFDN.mb.ca/AboutUs

Grant Allocation for 2013-2014 Fiscal Year 17 78% RESEARCH, EQUIPMENT and CLINICAL TRIALS

78% of the Foundation’s funding supports research, equipment and clinical trials. At the Foundation we believe this support is essential in attracting and retaining the best and brightest cancer specialists and this is shown to result in improved out- comes for patients.

This year 6,300 Manitobans received a cancer diagnosis and more than 2,600 died from the disease. Our goal in supporting research is to increase the survival rate and where survival is not possible, to increase the number of years patients are living with the disease. We are motivated by recent statistics that show 63% of Manitobans diagnosed with cancer are living five years after diagnosis. This is an improvement of more than 7% over the last dozen years; an indication research and treatment are improving outcomes for many patients.

Over 100 clinical trials are currently open at CCMB and more than 300 new patients are enrolled each year. Participation in a clinical trial provides the patient with access to the best possible treatment options and is shown to improve patient outcomes. WE CAN improve outcomes

CCMF FUNDING HELPS ATTRACT NEW CANCER RESEARCH SPECIALIST

A recent addition to the CCMB team is Dr. Sachin Katyal, a new investigator at the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, the joint cancer research institute shared by CancerCare Manitoba and the University of Manitoba (U of M). Dr. Katyal was recruited from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee, thanks in part to support from CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Dr. Katyal’s research program investigates the mechanics of how damage to DNA is repaired, and how that repair process is altered in cancer, particularly malignant brain tumours. Identifying this mechanism can lead to more effective chemotherapy and radiation therapies for many types of cancers. By specifically targeting cancerous cells without affecting healthy tissue, lower doses of chemotherapies could be used with fewer long-term consequences for patients and their families.

18 12% PATIENT CARE, SUPPORT and TRAINING

12% of the grant to CCMB this year supports more than two dozen programs that ease the cancer journey for patients and families.

Many of the projects funded this year are for ongoing support for services that have become mainstays at CCMB. These include support for the Guardian Angel Caring Room, The Navigator Newsletter, Music To My Ears, Camp Indigo, CCMB Aftercare Program for Survivors of Childhood Cancer, Community Oncology Scholarships, among others.

The goal for some grants is to provide startup funding (for pilot programs) with the intent that ongoing funding is secured in subsequent years. One example is the development of the Patient Guide; a document provided to patients on CCMF HELPS FUND CUTTING- their first visit to CCMB. This publication provides a ‘road map’ for patients and EDGE RIVA TECHNOLOGY families that provide answers to common questions and a place to record key milestones along the cancer journey. RIVA, which stands for Robotic Intravenous (IV) Automation, is a fully automated IV compounding system produced by Winnipeg-based Intelligent Hospital Systems. It mixes chemotherapy drugs quickly, safely, and accurately. In addition to increased safety for patients and staff, time saved will allow the redeployment of staff to other important clinical tasks that will make a real difference in the cancer patient journey.

Each year the Foundation provides operating funds for the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Registry (EPI) that is responsible for the collection, organization, and analysis of a variety of population-based cancer data.

By transforming raw data into useful information, EPI provides critical insight used to develop programs to prevent cancer, detect it earlier or improve treatment. The Foundation also supports screening programs and the First Nations, Metis and Inuit Cancer Control.

4% AWARENESS and RISK REDUCTION

This year the Foundation launched its new risk reduction program using a newly created brand – Kick Cancer. The program shows Manitobans how they can reduce their personal risk of cancer up to 50% by adopting five lifestyle choices. The program responds to forecasts that show the number of Manitobans receiving a cancer diagnosis is expected to increase by fifty percent over the next two decades. A key aspect of the new program asks Manitobans to “take the pledge” to reduce their cancer risk at a new website www.kickcancer.ca.

Following cancer screening guidelines - Get Checked - is one of the five lifestyle choices promoted within the program. In addition to creating awareness about the importance of screening in the Risk Reduction program, the Foundation also provides funding support for advertising programs (operated by CCMB Screening Department) that aim to educate and motivate eligible individuals to Get Checked. You can find more information or arrange a screening appointment at www.GetCheckedManitoba.ca. TOGETHER WE CAN 20 KICK CANCER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The Foundation and CCMB are NICOLINA AMMAZZINI – JUMPING, LAUGHING, LIVING focused on the same long-term goal I’m just a kid but my dad says “I’m a fighter”. Good thing because around my second birthday I had these weird lumps on my tummy – my pediatrician was of reducing the impact of cancer on worried – it was a Tuesday. My mom cried and kept crying. It all happened so fast. I had an ultrasound on Thursday and I remember the gooey stuff tickled. all Manitobans. I remember the look on my mom’s face when the doctor said I had tumors on At the Foundation we see the impact of my kidneys. He thought it might be cancer. My mom cried and kept crying. On the great work at CCMB every day. We are Friday I went for blood tests and we met our Oncologist a few hours later at privileged to meet many amazing people CancerCare Manitoba. Dr. Doyle said it was a strong possibility I had bilateral who share their stories and are honoured Wilms tumors and told my mom and dad the treatment options. It was not a to share one with you here. This is just good week for our family. one of thousands of stories of real people Monday a CT scan confirmed the diagnosis and the nurse put a Central Line who benefit from your support – a story in me that would stay there a long time. Six weeks of chemotherapy helped but that illustrates why your dollars matter! the doctor thought six more were needed before surgery would be possible. We spent Valentine’s Day (February 14) in surgery followed by radiation treatments and yes, more chemotherapy.

My dad was the strong one. He didn’t fuss over me and that made me feel like a regular kid, although regular kids don’t have cancer when they are two years old. I saw the doctor again on July 28, 2014 - he said I was going to be OK. A week later I got the Central Line taken out. My mom cried again that day and then she stopped – and we went to the waterslides and had popsicles. I love popsicles!

Now we have a trampoline and a slide in our backyard and me and Matteo (my older brother) jump and slide all the time. Here’s a picture of me jumping – look how high I can go! 21 CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc. Statement of Financial Position As at March 31, 2014
