Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord when Jesus was baptized with the baptism of John.

Christian baptism differs from the baptism of John in that the of Baptism is the doorway to eternal life. Many of us may think more of eternal life at funerals instead of , especially when the one being baptized is an infant. However, there are some shared between baptisms and funerals. A is a sign which bears a resemblance to the (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1667).

Perhaps the most obvious sacramental shared between baptisms and funerals is holy water. Unless it’s an emergency situation, holy water is used to baptize someone. At the beginning of a funeral, as a reminder of one’s baptism, holy water is sprinkled over the casket or the urn while the says: In the of baptism [Name] died with Christ and rose with him to new life. May he/she now share with him eternal glory.

Another sacramental shared between baptisms and funerals is a white garment. Immediately after the casket is sprinkled with holy water as a reminder of baptism, a funeral pall is usually placed over the casket. The funeral pall is a white garment that reminds us of the white garment we receive or in which we are clothed at our baptism. During a baptism the priest or deacon says the following concerning the white garment: [Name], you have become a new creation and have clothed yourself in Christ. May this white garment be a sign to you of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring it unstained into eternal life.

A third sacramental shared between baptisms and funerals is the or . This candle is blessed and lit for the first time at the , when the Church announces Christ’s opening of the doorway to eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Outside of the Easter Season, the Easter Candle is only lit for baptisms and funerals.

Holy water, the white garment, and the Easter Candle are used at both the Sacrament of Baptism and funeral Masses. They link the moment we first receive eternal life at our baptism with the moment we hopefully enter into the fullness of eternal life at our funeral.

What is something you remember from a baptism for which you were present?

~Father Mark Murphy

Sharing the Gospel "Keep trying. You're doing great. I'm so proud of you." Every child should hear words like that. Every child wants to feel God's love. As Jesus grew from a boy to a man, he showed he was ready to live for God. At Jesus' baptism, God told Jesus, "You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you." God loves you as his child, too.

Prayer God, I am so glad you love me.

St. Jude Nativity According to tradition, St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first crèche in 1223. The purpose of the live nativity scene was to cultivate the worship of Jesus.

The display of our beautiful Nativity scene in our narthex is one of our parish's Christmas traditions. In December 1999, the current figurines of baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, imported from Italy, were displayed in the stable built of boards from a 100-year-old barn that a parishioner was having torn down. Other figurines were added over time, including the Three Kings in 2011. Unique to this year's Nativity scene is the inclusion of some derecho branches. You don't have to look too long to find those branches.

"Oh come let us adore Him."

We hope you were able to visit our crèche during the Christmas season which ends January 10.

The Sign of the Cross Mass Intentions Why do Catholics make the sign of the cross? Monday, January 11 — No Mass Pray for Vocations The sign of the cross is a devotional practice Tuesday, January 12 — 7:00 AM Mike Wehr ꝉ that dates back to the first Apostles. When Wednesday, January 13 — 7:00 AM Lloyd Bean ꝉ making the sign of the cross, we remember Thursday, January 14 — 7:00 AM John & Janae Steffen ꝉ Jesus Christ who died for us and also bear Friday, January 15 — 7:00 AM Mildred Tressel ꝉ witness to the fact that we belong to him Saturday, January 16 — 4:30 PM Deceased members of Garringer family ꝉ and are called to share the Good News to all Sunday, January 17 — 8:30 AM For the Parish the world. At our Baptism, we were signed Sunday, January 17 — 10:30 AM Laura Whittle Hansen ꝉ with a cross and marked for Christ. That mark remains on us throughout the entirety Daily Readings for the Week of January 10, 2020 of our lives. We remind ourselves of that mark every time we make the same gesture Sunday: Is 42:1-4, 6-7/Ps 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10 [11b]/Acts 10:34-38/Mk 1:7-11 or over our bodies. We also remind ourselves Is 55:1-11/Is 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6 [3)]/1 Jn 5:1-9/Mk 1:7-11 that to be a Christian means we are to “put Monday: Heb 1:1-6/Ps 97:1 and 2b, 6 and 7c, 9 [cf. 7c]/Mk 1:14-20 on Christ” and be Christ for a world that Tuesday: Heb 2:5-12/Ps 8:2ab and 5, 6-7, 8-9 [cf. 7]/Mk 1:21-28 needs to know him. In a way, this devotional Wednesday: Heb 2:14-18/Ps 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9 [8a]/Mk 1:29-39 gesture covers us with Christ so that others Thursday: Heb 3:7-14/Ps 95:6-7c, 8-9, 10-11 [8]/Mk 1:40-45 may see him in us. Friday: Heb 4:1-5, 11/Ps 78:3 and 4bc, 6c-7, 8 [cf. 7b]/Mk 2:1-12 Catholics are not the only ones who make Saturday: Heb 4:12-16/Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 15 [cf. Jn 6:63c]/Mk 2:13-17 the sign of the cross. Orthodox, Lutheran, Next Sunday: 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19/Ps 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10 [8a, 9a]/1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20/ and Anglicans are examples of other Jn 1:35-42 Christians who maintain this same ancient tradition. ©LPi Baptism A Baptism class will be offered on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 6:30 PM.
