The Melbourne Cup Carnival Millinery Fashion Highlights... Presented by HATalk e-magazine and Racing Fashion Australia Foreword by Anna Mott Founder of Racing Fashion Australia Five years ago, I was heading to all the major race meetings in Australia, including the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Autumn Carnival in Sydney and Brisbane's Winter Carnival. While enjoying being a competitor in Myer’s Fashions on the Field contests, I would see fabulous members of the social circuit, as well as celebrities, who had been dressed by professional stylists. I felt that something was missing from the excitement of the track - the individuals who take hours, and sometimes months, of preparation to put an outfit together. I found it important to embrace these ladies and gentlemen and to focus on the beauty of every competitor - not only the winners were the worthy. In fact, when heading to the races every person is dressed in their 'Sunday Best' and feeling fantastic. I began taking photos of the competitors, as well as the other ladies and gentlemen looking wonderful, and everyone embraced the idea and welcomed me. RACING FASHION AUSTRALIA 1 www.racingfashion.com.au At first, people thought I had an angle and was trying to make money. On the contrary, I pretty much make no money and have only a few loyal sponsors. I am just trying to promote millinery and hat wearing, since much of the daily wearing of hats has died since the 1960s. Over the past four years, statistics say that I have had over 338 million hits on my website, www.racingfashion.com. au. I had no idea that people would be so excited about this, although it is wonderful to see that everyone has embraced millinery, hats and Racing Fashion. We are now into Season 5 of Racing Fashion TV. We had a few teething problems in the first few seasons, but now we are onto a winning formula, talking to everyone at the track, whether they be milliners, fashion designers, trainers or members of the public walking past looking and feeling fabulous. Racing Fashion is dedicated to embracing all who head to the track in their favourite attire and to proving, no matter what our age, size or shape, that we are all beautiful and deserve to be showcased. When thinking of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, one thing comes to mind - COLOUR. In 2012 we were not disappointed, there were neon highlights and pops of colour everywhere. The Melbourne Cup Carnival, and in fact the entire Spring Racing Carnival, is a time for hats to shine and, as you will see from the photos taken during the Carnival which are included in the following pages, 2012 was no exception. The Melbourne Cup Carnival is the highlight of Group One horse racing in Australia. It begins with the AAMI Victoria Derby Day, offering lots of prize money and a traditional dress code of ‘Black and White’. Visitors can feel free to add a burst of subtle colour, as long as it is in keeping with the essence of the tradition. Emirates Melbourne Cup Day is next and is always held on the first Tuesday in November. This spectacular event embraces colour - a chance for the ladies to bloom like the roses which are so carefully taken care of by the Victoria Racing Club’s Greens Keeper so that they will bloom on exactly the right day. Racegoers should keep colours bright and strong on Cup Day and a sense of theatrics never goes astray. Then comes Crown Oaks Day, which is definitely the most fashionable day of the Carnival. Fashions on the Field winners from all the states of Australia come together to create the world’s largest outdoor fashion event. Finally, Emirate Stakes Day is a day to relax. It is Family Day so children and younger competitors take to the stage. We choose not to focus too heavily on this competition as the competitors are under 18 and should all be in a win- win situation that is not as heavily competitive. RACING FASHION AUSTRALIA 2 www.racingfashion.com.au The most coveted millinery prize in Australia - The Myer Fashions on the Field Millinery Award - is awarded on Crown Oaks Day, and you have to be accepted by a panel of experts to exhibit. Over the years, some of the world’s best milliners have been on the judging panel of the Millinery Award, including Stephen Jones and Freddie Fox. Innovation, visual aesthetic and technique are all taken into consideration. Fashions on the Field was founded at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and 2012 marked its 50th Anniversary in spectacular style, with Irish milliner Philip Treacy OBE joining the judging panel. Lynette Lim, from Love Lotus Millinery, won the Award, wowing not only the crowd and fellow milliners but also Philip Treacy, who asked about the length of time her hat took to make and the techniques she had used. When talking to Lynette about her brilliant design, we learned that it took painstaking hours of patience, workmanship and precision to achieve the winning look (right). It is now Autumn in Australia and milliners here are already looking for inspiration as they prepare the millinery delights that will take centre stage at Oaks Day this November. Melbourne and Australia welcome overseas visitors to come and embrace the excitement and fun of what racing has to offer at the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival from November 2nd - 9th. VRC Flemington has many dining options, as well as offering the excitement of the horses, track, fashion and millinery marvels.
