4 MESSAGE FROM RABBI MASSRI ALL THINGS arshat Devarim is always read on the Shabbat right before Tisha B’Av. The Biur Halacha explains that this is purposefully done in order that Moshe Rabbeinu’s SEPHARDIC Padmonition to the coincide with the Tisha B’Av period. (SEE PAGE 8 FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO REGISTER) One may ask why it is necessary for the specific admonition in Parshat Devarim to be read in conjunction with the mourning period which precedes Tisha B’Av. After all, the rebuke of Parshat Va’etchanan, which is read on Tisha B’Av SHABBAT SCHEDULE itself, appears immediately after this week’s reading. Why FRIDAY NIGHT JULY 24 was the rebuke of Va’etchanan, or some other admonition, not designated for the period leading up to Tisha B’Av? MINCHA/ARVIT AT THE SHUL: 7:00 PM EARLIEST CANDLE LIGHTNING: 6:46 PM The overall structure of this week’s parshah delineates the circumstances in which Bnei Israel find themselves at REGULAR CANDLE LIGHTING: 7:53 PM the end of the Midbar experience. The old generation had SHKIAH (SUNSET): 8:10 PM basically died out as a result of the sin of the Meraglim. If not for that event, the Jews would have already been in TZET HAKOCHAVIM: 8:52 PM Eretz Israel for 38 years, with the previous generation still in control. Due to the sin, entry to the land was delayed, the SHABBAT, JULY 25 old generation was mostly extinct (the Levi’im and women survived), and the entirety of Jewish destiny was redefined. SHACHARIT AT THE SHUL: 9:00 AM Moshe therefore addresses the present generation from NETZ HACHAMA: 6:43 AM this perspective, devoting most of the parshah to the sin of the Meraglim, so as to provide a context to the people. He ZMAN KERIAT SHEMA: 9:27 AM lets them know where the Jews were headed prior to the sin, and he explains the total shift of course and eternal CLASS BY RABBI MASSRI: 7:30 PM ramifications which the sin precipitated, thus placing the new generation at the point of entry to the land 38 years MINCHA/ARVIT AT THE SHUL: 7:50 PM after conquest should have already occurred. Jewish destiny was forever changed on the Ninth of Av in those days. This is precisely why we read Moshe’s rebuke of Parshat Devarim on the Shabbos before Tisha B’Av. We are again told that EEDA SCHEDULE the present situation in which we find ourselves – a Jewish destiny of galut and suffering – was caused by grievous transgressions long ago, just like the generation of Devarim SHACHARIT was advised by Moshe that its parents’ actions irrevocably KORBANOT: 7:45 AM HODU: 8:00 AM altered its destiny. 9 DAILY WISDOM Inspiring insights on the Torah Shabbos, 4 Av Sunday, 5 Av The Art of Self-Sacrifice [ told the tribes of Reuben and Gad,] “You True Individuality must cross over armed before your brothers.” Deuteronomy 3:18 [Moses told the Jewish people that in contrast to the rebels among them, who had died out,] “all of you who are alive The conquest of the corresponds to today are [lovingly] attached to G-d.” Deuteronomy 4:4 our inner conquest of the animalistic side of our personalities in order to ensure that we lead our lives One might think that the more we are devoted to G-d, the more in a G-dly way. The power within us that leads us into our personal individuality disappears. The Torah teaches us here this battle – i.e., our inner tribes of Reuben and Gad – that the opposite is true: Our true individuality depends directly is our ability to risk our lives for our principles. upon the depth of our attachment to G-d. What we normally Normally, it is enough for us to recall that we would mistake for our personality is really our secondary, animalistic be willing to lay down our lives for our principles, and side. Since we share the same animal drives with the rest of that, in essence, any threat to our Divine mission is a humanity, the personality born of these drives is, at best, a direct assault on our principles. Resisting our animal variation on the common theme by which everyone lives. Thus, drives then becomes a much simpler matter. the apparent individuality of this aspect of our personality is in However, when we are confronted with a general fact an illusion. challenge to our Jewish lifestyle, we need to summon not only the recollection of our willingness to sacrifice In contrast, since G-d is infinite, the avenues through which His everything for our principles, but the willingness Divinity can manifest itself through us are also infinite; thus, it is itself. This is our ability to assert our Jewishness no only our Divine personality that makes us truly unique. It follows matter how strong the powers of persuasion, ridicule, that the more we allow the animalistic side of our personalities or compulsion that opposing forces throw at us. Our inner tribes of Reuben and Gad need to leap forth as a to dissolve as we draw closer to G-d, the more we allow our separate “battalion” and wipe out the enemy’s threat unique, Divine personalities to shine forth. in one fell swoop. By utilizing this inner strength, we can hasten the true Tuesday, 7 Av and final Redemption, both of the Jewish people and of all humanity. The Torah is our Life [Cities of refuge were established so an unintentional murderer] might flee to one of these cities in order that he Monday, 6 Av might live. Deuteronomy 4:42 Overcoming the Limits of Creation [Moses told the Jewish people that at Mount Someone who committed murder unintentionally had to Sinai,] “You were shown in order to know that remain in his city of refuge. He was not allowed to leave, for G-d is the only deity. There is nothing other than by doing so, he would expose himself to the vengeance of Him.” Deuteronomy 4:35 his victim’s relative, who was legally allowed to kill him. The unintentional murderer was not allowed outside his city of By revealing His essence, which is beyond Creation, refuge even to save someone else’s life. G-d enabled us to transcend the limits of nature, as well. In order to overcome life’s challenges and tests, Similarly, the Torah is our “city of refuge.” Inside the Torah and we need only remind ourselves that “there is nothing the lifestyle that G-d prescribes for us, we are spiritually alive; other than Him,” i.e., that nothing can constitute a real if we venture outside the confines of the Torah’s lifestyle, we obstacle to fulfilling G-d’s intentions, since everything, expose ourselves to the risk of spiritual death. in the final analysis, is part of G-d’s essence. Evoking this awareness elevates our Divine consciousness to This is true even if it seems that we can save someone’s life the level of truly perceiving G-d’s essence everywhere. by making some compromise in the Torah’s directives. The This, in turn, serves to hasten the Messianic Torah is synonymous with life, so only through loyalty to its Redemption, when “the glory of G-d will be revealed principles can we both maintain our own spiritual vitality and and all flesh will see it together.” preserve or enhance the spiritual vitality of others.

10 Wednesday, 8 Av Repeating the Ten Commandments [Moses told the Jewish people, “When He gave you the Torah,] G-d spoke with you at the mountain face to face.” Deuteronomy 5:4

The first account of the Ten Commandments – in the – is the “real time” description of how this event occurred. The second account of the Ten Commandments is Moses’ description of it, as part of his historical review of the Jewish people’s Exodus from Egypt and their trek through the desert.

Reliving the first account of the Giving of the Torah allows us to experience G-d’s presence in the Torah as we are studying it. This experience prevents us from forgetting that the study of the Torah is a spiritual encounter between G-d and us and not merely an intellectual pursuit. Hearing the second account of the Ten Commandments, couched as part of Moses’ address to the people, enables us to employ our own, human intellect in the study of the Torah, in order to internalize it and absorb its message fully. In this way, the goal of making this world into a home for G-d is achieved.

Eternal Revelation How to Love G-d [Moses told the Jewish people], [Moses told the Jewish people that if they contemplate G-d’s presence “G-d spoke these words . . . with in their lives,] “You will love G-d with all your heart.” Deuteronomy 6:5 a great voice, not pausing [at all].” Deuteronomy 5:19 If someone loves G-d, he does not need to be told to do so; if he does not love G-d, telling him to will not change his mind. Therefore, both the medieval sage One meaning of the expression Rabbi Moses and the founder of Chasidism, Rabbi Yisrael Ba’al “not pausing” is that the voice of Shem Tov, explain this verse to be both a commandment and a promise. We G-d at continued – are commanded to contemplate the unity of G-d, which is described in the and continues – to be revealed in preceding verse – ”Hear, O Israel, G-d is our G-d, G-d is one.” If we meditate on the prophecies and teachings of the meaning of this verse deeply enough, we are assured that will we indeed the prophets and sages of each thereby come to love G-d. generation. The fact that these prophecies and teachings were not explicitly articulated when the Torah was first given is simply because the world and the Jewish people did not yet require them. They were nonetheless implicit in the original revelation of the Torah.

15 4 POWERFUL INSIGHTS FROM THE REBBE ON PARSHAS DEVARIM

The Uniqueness of Devarim The book of Devarim is a 37-day-long speech by Moses, beginning on the first of Shevat and ending on the seventh of —the day of Moses’ passing. In his speech, Moses recaps the major events and laws that are recorded in the Torah’s other four books. Moses wrote all five books. But, as our sages explain, in the first four books Moses transcribed everything as he received it from G-d, while in Devarim he says it “in his own words.”

In Torah there are two dimensions: a dimension in which both the content and the “packaging” are bestowed from Above, and a dimension in which the divine wisdom and will is packaged in “our own words.” And then we have the book of Devarim, in which the two converge: a human being, Moses, attains a level of identification with the divine wisdom and will on which “his own words” are completely The Paradox of Descent in harmony with their divine content—so much in harmony that they are no less G-d’s words than those which G-d There is a saying of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, dictated in the first four books. that this Shabbat, Shabbat Chazon (when we read as the , the famous Vision (Chazon) of Isaiah), is a day G-d granted the human mind and mouth a mandate not only when we are presented with a vision of the future Third to shape His world, but also to participate in the formulation Temple. of the Torah—the laws, the blueprint, the “source code” This leads us to understand the connection between the of creation. The first to receive this mandate was Moses, “vision” of the Haftorah, and the Sidra of Devarim, which who fulfilled it so perfectly that his “contribution” became are always read together on the Shabbat before the 9th one of the five books that form the crux of Torah. The wisdom. book of Devarim differs from the other four books in being addressed to the generation who were about to enter the Holy Land. They needed counsel and caveat in a way that the previous generations did not.

But they were, nonetheless, to reach something unattained by their fathers. Only by the descent into material concerns, the translation of G-d’s will into practical action, could the fulfillment be reached of “the rest and the inheritance.”

Devarim, tells of the paradox that through descent comes true uplifting: The highest achievements of the spirit are won in earthly and not heavenly realms. This is also the message of the “vision”—even though this Haftarah is read in the “Nine Days” of mourning for the loss of the Temples, nonetheless through the resultant exile will come the true redemption, the vision which we glimpse (in the words of the Berditchever) in the very moment of our loss

16 The Power of the Ordinary

In the beginning of Devarim (Verse 5) Moses “began to expound the Torah with thorough explanation.” explains that “with thorough explanation” means that Moses translated the Torah into 70 languages.

Of what value was that translation? In that era, all the Jews understood Lashon HaKodesh, the Hebrew in which the Torah was written. What purpose was achieved by translating the text?

Among the explanations given is that by doing so, Moses elevated the secular tongues in which he spoke. Our Sages say: “Everything which G-d created in His world, He created solely for His glory.” No entity, be it a language, a precious metal, or an invention has a separate, independent identity. It Ultimate Self Sacrifice was created by G-d from absolute nothingness for a purpose: to reveal His glory. In doing so, than the rest of the nation — evidence of mesiras nefesh, we change the nature of the world and enable total self-sacrifice. the purpose for which G-d brought it into being to resonate within it. The following two aspects of mesiras nefesh reflect the two ways they did battle.

The first is Mesirus nefesh that is enclothed within intellect, emotion, speech etc., so that one’s performance of Torah and mitzvos is fueled by it. The main aspect of an individual’s spiritual service remains the day-to-day study of Torah and performance of mitzvos; mesiras nefesh is invoked merely as a means to enhance this service, and not as an end in itself. At the outset they placed themselves at the head of the Jewish army, referring to this mesiras nefesh that served as the “head” and conductor of the intellect and emotions, etc.

Thereafter they attained a higher degree of mesiras nefesh, wherein the two tribes would forge ahead on their own as a separate entity. This corresponds to mesiras nefesh that is an end unto itself: be it in a situation that requires actual self-sacrifice, or one that requires mesiras nefesh in potentia.
