    SUMMER 2017 Friends of the (Jackson-Madison County) Library Newsletter PRESIDENT’S CORNER by Sue Ann Barnes, President - Friends of the Library Board Hiatus, what a wonderful word. It is from the Latin haire to yawn, with one of the meanings being an interruption in time or continuity. (10th ed. of MW Collegiate Dictionary) Friends of the Library now takes a summer hiatus from our first Thursday Noon Programs. So I won’t be telling you of poets, authors or story tellers in this summer edition of Bookends, but that does not mean that you won’t have things to do or that I don’t have news to share with you. First of all, looking back to our spring programs, library patrons and FOL members were exposed to poetry that really struck our heart strings and exhibited poetry’s ability to tell wonderful stories in a few, very well chosen, words. Those who came to Harry Moore’s noon program in early April and Robert Cooperman’s two presentations in our late April symposium, heard master wordsmiths read their poems and talk of their craft. In March, there was a fascinating presentation by Jackie Utley on Victorian mourning jewelry that informed, entertained and delighted us. In May, 22 happy gardeners came to the library to hear Christine Warrington share information on succulents and to show us clever ways to grow and IN THIS ISSUE show them off. Many also participated in our plant swap, happily taking President’s Corner ............ 1-2 home pots of new finds. Director’s Column ...............

    2019 NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT BIOGRAPHIES Joe Mantegna Joe was awarded the Tony and Joseph Jefferson Award for his acclaimed performance as Richard Roma in David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross. Some of Joe’s film and television highlights are; House of Games, Searching for Bobby Fisher, Godfather III, his Emmy and Golden Globe nominated role of Dean Martin in The Ratpack, his Emmy nominated role of Pipi Delana in The Last Don, and the voice of Fat Tony on The Simpsons. For two seasons, Joe stared with Mary Steenburgen and Amber Tamblyn in the critically acclaimed CBS drama Joan of Arcadia, winner of the 2004 People Choice Award for best new drama as well as picking up three Emmy nominations. In 2008, Joe reprised his Emmy nominated role of Lou Manahan opposite Debra Messing in USA Network series The Starter Wife. Joe has also lent his voice to the Disney/Pixar film, CARS2 and continues his 23-year run as Fat Tony on The Simpsons. In April of 2011, Joe received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Joe lends much of his free time to a number of philanthropic endeavors. In May of 2012, Joe was appointed the National Spokesperson for The U.S. Army Museum, to lead the fundraising campaign to build the long-planned National Museum of the United States Army. He’s also an ambassador for the Gary Sinise Foundation, which builds homes for wounded veterans, as well as hosting the National Memorial Day Concert since 2006. His passions also include various autism related charities as well as being a long-time supporter of the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children.

Her career as an actress dates back more than three decades and has led her to becoming a voice for her father, her son and her community. She was recently seen at the center of Hallmark Channel’s new and very first primetime family docu-series, “Meet the Peetes,” which returned for its second season in February 2019. Peete also starred in five “Morning Show Mysteries” originals for Hallmark Mysteries & Movies, and recently co-starred in the Hallmark original movie “Christmas in Evergreen: Letters to Santa.” Robinson Peete had her first experience in front of the camera at the age of four when she appeared on television opposite her father, Matthew Robinson, who served as a producer and portrayed the original beloved character of Gordon on the iconic children’s program “Sesame Street.” While she knew even at that young age her calling was to be an actress, Robinson Peete opted to lead a typical childhood rather than searching to be the next child star. However, upon finishing her college education, Robinson Peete’s heart led her back to entertainment.     2019 NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT BIOGRAPHIES Joe Mantegna Joe was awarded the Tony and Joseph Jefferson Award for his acclaimed performance as Richard Roma in David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross. Some of Joe’s film and television highlights are; House of Games, Searching for Bobby Fisher, Godfather III, his Emmy and Golden Globe nominated role of Dean Martin in The Ratpack, his Emmy nominated role of Pipi Delana in The Last Don, and the voice of Fat Tony on The Simpsons. For two seasons, Joe stared with Mary Steenburgen and Amber Tamblyn in the critically acclaimed CBS drama Joan of Arcadia, winner of the 2004 People Choice Award for best new drama as well as picking up three Emmy nominations. In 2008, Joe reprised his Emmy nominated role of Lou Manahan opposite Debra Messing in USA Network series The Starter Wife.
