Obviously we hope that everything will be stabilized a bit and that the activity can be carried out as usual. As always, you can send bids through our website, by e-mail, by post or fax, or participate Live on the same day using the Philasearch platform, or require a telephone connection to be held during the auction. All requests must be received by Friday 4 June at 17 (local time). Since there is no meeting at fairs, which unfortunately were cancelled, to give the opportu- nity to more people to see the material “live”, viewing of lots will be longer: it will start on Monday, 10 May by our premises and will continue from Thursday 3 June in the auction room. It is always necessary to arrange an appointment with our staff. Unlike other times, the lots (even the bulky ones) have all been photographed, even though some of them only partially just to give an idea of the whole; and in some cases there is the pdf of the complete album. The auction will be publicly and live auctioned on Saturday 5 June. Access to the room will only be allowed by appointment with registration of the name. We therefore invite all those interested in attending the auction in Vignola in person to communicate it as soon as possible; places will be limited according to the rules of distancing. Vaccari will guarantee everyone strict compliance with the safety regulations established at regional and national level and by the company itself. If the situation does not allow it, the auction will be carried out behind closed doors only through live participation, by telephone and clearly all the correspondence bids received previously. Any changes will be communicated in our site, in our information and social channels. We wish everyone the best and we are confident that we can continue carrying out the auc- tion in the best way. Public and Live Auction 5 June 2021 Foreword The present catalogue n.98 displays philately and postal history relevant (as in the Papal State), but there are also three “Trinacria”, as usual, but also a section devoted to philatelic literature. B. EVANS ♦ LONDON STANLEY GIBBONS, LIMITED 391, STRAND, W.C. 1904 PREFACE H E Stamps of Sicily or, to use the official designation, of the “ Dominions beyond the Phare,” which formed part, under a separate Administration, of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, are so interesting, not only from an artistic, but also from historical and philatelic points of view, that a study of them grounded on official papers and on the examination of specimens in the collections of some of the leading specialists, seems to be entitled to particular attention from the philatelic public. Considering that the Postal Administration of Sicily contributed to our collections only one set of stamps, the use of which lasted for a period of less than nineteen months, the short history, from its adoption to its with drawal, seems to the mere casual observer to afford scope rather for an article than for a monograph. But if we take into consideration the historical period during which the life of these stamps lasted, the existence of different plates for certain values, some of which were subject to retouching ; the numerous shades in which the stamps were printed, and tfye fact that further issues were contemplated, at first by the Bourbon Postal Authorities and later on under the Dictatorship and Lieutenancy of the Sicilian Provinces, the field of our researches will soon be found to be much wider than could have been anticipated.

At first the scarcity of information and afterwards the want of time to examine and arrange the material collected have prevented me from carrying out this scheme until the present time.

  • Philatelic Trade in Nineteenth Century Italy
PHILATELIC TRADE IN NINETEENTH CENTURY ITALY Emilio Simonazzi Roma, Italy Fig. 1: Photographic portrait of Carlo Cocorda. In Italy philatelic collecting began to develop soon after the national unity (1861), thanks also to the large number of postage stamps issued before the unification by the Italian States. These - with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy - were merged in Turin under the General Directorate of Public Works which was in charge of the Post. This was made possible by the availability of suitable labour wich supported those who had started this new type of collection. At the same time, as the first collectors started to appear, the first dealers started to be active, often just as adevelopment from collecting, where the distinction between collecting and dealing was often very subtle. The parallel between collecting and dealing in the subject of collecting itself, however, has been a long debated concept if one considers what “Jean Clavel” wrote on the “L’Echò de la Timbrologiè” in 1928: “... .. It is not a paradox to say that those who live in philately are those who in turn make it live.” The bibliography of philately, however, has very little to offer on the origins of the philatelic trade in Italy; but it must be remembered that the American John K. Tiffany reported in “The Philatelical Library: a catalog of Stamp publication” published in St. Louis in 1874, in a list of bulletins published by philatelic dealers from various countries, four Italians: “F. Caldelli” in Florence in 1866, “G. Leoni” in Bologna in 1874, “Paolo Norberto” in Turin in 1864 and “Tartarini & C.” in Bologna in 1872 in “The Philatelical Library: a catalogue of Stamp publication”published in St.
