The Game: IUP returns to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2002 with a first round game at West Chester. The Crimson Hawks were able to hold on to the sixth seed in the Northeast Region despite losing at Bloomsburg in their regular season finale to earn their 14th trip to the postseason. The winner of Saturday’s game will play at Shepherd in the second round. On the other side of the bracket, Southern Connecticut State faces Bryant with the winner traveling to California.

National Rankings: IUP is ranked 23rd in the Coaches Association poll and 25th in the D2Football.com poll. West Chester is ranked 16th in both polls.

The Series: IUP leads the series 9-6 but West Chester won the last meeting by a score of 30-20 early in the 2005 regular season. Prior to that defeat, IUP had won five in a row over the Golden Rams between 1987 and 1999. The teams have never met in the NCAA playoffs. Since 1983, IUP has a record of 3-3 at Farrell Stadium. has a record of 1-1 vs. West Chester while at Edinboro and Bill Zwaan is 1-0 vs. IUP.

On the Air: The IUP-West Chester game can be heard on WQMU 92.5 FM beginning at 11:30. Jack Benedict is in his 39th season calling IUP football, and he will be joined by John Flickinger (color) and Doug Steve (sideline). The Coaches: Lou Tepper (Rutgers, 1967) is 16-4 in his second season at IUP and 81-61-2 in 14 years overall. He has led the Crimson Hawks to consecutive 8-2 regular season records and a share of the PSAC West title in 2006 when Tepper was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year for the third time in the past four years. He also earned the honor in 2003 and 2005 while at Edinboro.

Tepper led the Fighting Scots for six seasons and had an overall record of 40-26. His last three Edinboro teams won 26 of 33 games, tied for the PSAC West championship each season and made trips to the NCAA playoffs in 2003 and 2004. Edinboro defeated Bentley in the opening round in 2004, the team’s first postseason victory since 1990.

Tepper was the head coach at Illinois from December 13, 1991 through the end of the 1996 season. He had a mark of 25-31-2 with the Fighting Illini. His background also includes 28 seasons as an assistant coach on the Division I level, with 19 of those as defensive coordinator at New Hampshire, William & Mary, Colorado, Illinois and LSU.

Bill Zwaan (Delaware, 1979) has a record of 45-17 in his fifth season at West Chester and 99-40 in 11 seasons overall. He posted a record of 54-23 in six seasons at Division III power Widener. Zwaan has led the Golden Rams into the NCAA playoffs in each of the past four years and is 9-5 overall in the postseason (4-3 at West Chester, 5-2 at Widener). He has led both schools to the national semifinals.

IUP in the NCAA Playoffs

IUP Playoff History: IUP is making its 14th appearance in the Division II playoffs and Saturday’s game will be the 29th playoff game in school history dating back to the 1987 season. IUP has a record of 15-13 in the playoffs, reached the national semifinals six times (1989-91, 1993-94 and 1999) and played in the national championship game in 1990 and 1993. IUP is 4-1 vs. the PSAC East in the playoffs, defeating Edinboro (1990), Shippensburg (1991) and Slippery Rock and Millersville (1999) while losing to Millersville (1988).

IUP Shutouts: IUP has posted two shutouts this season, blanking Millersville 45-0 on September 22 and Shippensburg 30-0 on November 3. IUP has at least one shutout in 19 of the past 25 seasons with a total of 35 shutouts over that span.

IUP Breaks Game Scoring Record: IUP broke a 39-year record for most points in a game in its 80-14 drubbing of Cheyney in the season opener at . The previous record was 75 in a 75-13 win against Northwood in 1968. The 66-point margin also broke the previous mark of 62 set in that contest against Northwood.

Eight-Win Seasons: IUP has won eight or more games in 20 of the past 23 seasons. During that span, IUP has won at least 10 games nine times, has had two seasons with 11 victories, two with 12 wins and the 1993 team won its first 13 games before losing to North Alabama in the national championship game. IUP has not had a losing season since going 4-6 in 1982, finishing with a winning record in 22 of the past 25 seasons (including this year) and breaking even at 5-5 in 1983, 1997 and 2005.

Andrew Krewatch Climbing Record Book: Sophomore quarterback Andrew Krewatch is enjoying an outstanding statistical season in 2007 and is ranked high in every season passing category. Krewatch has completed 187 of 311 passes (60.1 percent) for 2,481 yards and 23 touchdowns entering the playoffs. He has three touchdown passes in each of the past four games and six times overall this season. Krewatch is also starting to climb the list in the career record book.

Kareem Dutrieuille on Career Rushing Chart: Junior tailback Kareem Dutrieuille has rushed for a team-leading 752 yards this season and has a career total of 1,194 to rank 21st in school history. He had a career-high 192 yards against Clarion for his second 100-yard game of the season. He had 100 yards on a career-best 28 carries and scored two touchdowns against Edinboro.

Poohbear McNeal High on PSAC Rushing List: Senior tailback Poohbear McNeal has rushed for 467 yards at IUP after transferring from Mansfield and is one of only 10 players in PSAC history to rush for 4,000 career yards. He enters the playoffs with 4,068 career rushing yards, including 3,601 during his three years with the Mounties.

IUP Splits Kicking Duties: Matt McNelis and Craig Burgess have split the kicking duties almost right down the middle this season and have been nearly perfect.

McNelis, who played at Lehigh in 2004, has not missed a kick this year. He is 22 for 22 in extra points and 8 for 8 in field goals. His field goal total is tied for the ninth highest single season total in school history and no IUP kicker has ever made as many as eight field goals in a season without a miss. Included in his field goal total was a 28-yarder on the final play of the game against Slippery Rock that produced a 34-31 win on September 29.

Burgess is 25 for 26 in extra points, with his lone miss being a blocked attempt against Lock Haven, and has converted 6 of 7 field goals.

Combined, McNelis and Burgess are 14 for 15 in field goals this year and, including Nick Wallace’s 11 for 13 last year, IUP kickers are 25 for 28 over the past two seasons.
