The defiant rapper with a sensitive soul — one of hip-hop’s most exciting and controversial figures until his murder in Las Vegas in 1996 — was always concerned with his legacy, and the murder ensured his status as a hip-hop martyr. Without it, Shakur probably wouldn’t have received the same level of adulation showered on him over the past 20 years, or, quite possibly, even his recent nomination for the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Shakur’s voice has remained ubiquitous in hip-hop since his murder thanks to a steady stream of albums, verses, hooks, samples and remixes cribbed from the last two years of his life, when Shakur spent much of his time in the studio, smoking marijuana and laying down track after track after track — like a man obsessed with finishing a project, or, as Shakur often hinted in his songs, planning to die young, and anxious to record his words first.

He may be a leg- end, but he’s hardly a hero. Many young listeners looked up to him, but he himself often seemed to be searching for a leader. ¶ Though his recording career lasted just five years, Tupac Amaru Shakur (1971–1996) is one of the most popular artists in history, with over seventy-five million records sold worldwide. More than half of his eleven studio albums sold over three million copies in the Unit- ed States. Both All Eyez on Me (1996) and Greatest Hits have been certified diamond, surpassing the ten million mark and placing them among the top-selling albums of all time. • Post-Mortem Projections: Medieval Mystical Resurrection and the Return of Tupac Shakur Alicia Spencer-Hall*
Citation: OPTICON Spencer-Hall, A 2012 The Post-mortem Projections: Medieval Mystical Resurrection and MDCCCXXVI the Return of Tupac Shakur. Opticon1826, 13: 56-71, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/opt.af ARTICLE Post-mortem Projections: Medieval Mystical Resurrection and the Return of Tupac Shakur Alicia Spencer-Hall* Medieval hagiographies abound with tales of post-mortem visits and miracles by saints. The saint was a powerful religious individual both in life and in death, a con- duit of divine grace and lightning rod for Christian fervour. With her post-mortem presence, the presumptive boundary between living and dead, spirit and flesh, is rent apart: showing the reality of the hereafter and shattering the fantasies of the mortal world. The phenomenon of a glorified individual returning to a worshipful community after their apparent mortal expiration is not just medieval. In April 2012, the rapper Tupac Shakur “performed” on stage at the Coachella music festival. Tupac was murdered in 1996; his ghostly presence was the result of a hologram. His holo- graphic form, the “Pac-O-Gram”, took to the stage to a breathless crowd of fans. The holographic performance is a product of technological advances. Yet reports of the holographic performance were filled with references to Tupac’s “resurrection”, a significant word choice, and one which links the rapper’s return with medieval hagiography more than the advance of technology. What can an examination of the modern example of the Pac-O-Gram and examples drawn from medieval hagiography of the dead returning to life add to each other? Introduction ‘felt like they were seeing Tupac rise from Renowned American rapper and actor Tupac the grave,’ according to one source (Dinar Shakur was gunned down on 7 September 2012).

  • Dear Mama”—Tupac Shakur (1995) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Dear Mama”—Tupac Shakur (1995) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label Tupac Shakur “Me Against the World” was rap artist Tupac (sometimes spelled “2Pac”) Shakur’s third studio album and his first to go double platinum. Among the album’s 15 tracks was a song destined to become his best known: “Dear Mama.” In some ways the song is very straight-forward: a long, rhyming ode to his mother and all mothers who have struggled to raise their children against the backdrop of hardship, racism and inner city violence. Yet few would call it a sentimental work. Shakur (1971-1996) certainly came from no ordinary or sentimentalized surroundings, and certainly from no ordinary mother. His mother is Afeni Shakur (born Alice Faye Williams), a “courageous, creative woman” according to her friend, the novelist Toni Morrison. A politicized individual, Mrs. Shakur was a member of the Black Panthers and gave birth to her son one month and three days after being released from prison. She had been jailed in New York regarding “conspiracy against the United States government,” charges for which she was ultimately acquitted. As would be noted years later, her son, Tupac, was practically “born into the movement.” Though his mother sometimes worked as a school teacher or legal assistant, poverty was a constant. Based in New York City, the family was nevertheless forced to shuttle often between Harlem and the Bronx due to money troubles. Also not helping the family’s situation was Afreni’s ongoing drug problems. Regardless, from an early age, Tupac showed a performance bent.

Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research, Harvard University, April 17, 2003 By Mark Anthony Neal University of Texas, Austin Niggas with knowledge is more dangerous than niggas with guns they make the guns easy to get and try to keep niggas dumb (Talib Kweli ‘‘The Proud’’) On April 17, 2003, a group of scholars, journalists, and fans gathered at Harvard University to talk about hip-hop. The occasion was the symposium ‘‘All Eyez on Me: Tupac Shakur and the Search for a Modern Folk Hero.’’ Jointly sponsored by the Hiphop Archive, located within the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research, and the Program for Folklore and Mythology at Harvard, the event examined Tupac’s legacy as an intellectual, a political figure, and an urban folk hero. The Hiphop Archive at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, currently under the leadership of Harvard anthropologist Marcyliena Morgan, was launched in January of 2002 and is one of the first scholarly archives devoted solely to hip-hop music and culture. The symposium offered yet more evidence of the current engagement between American academics and the burgeoning culture that had its birth in urban centers throughout the United States 30 years ago. Scholars such as Michael Eric Dyson, who was the keynote speaker for the event, Tricia Rose, and Todd Boyd have made careers out of being hip-hop pundits.

  • All Eyez on Me
All Eyez on Me Preliminary Production Notes Short Synopsis The feature film All Eyez on Me sheds new light on the events behind the meteoric rise and tragic fall of charismatic rapper Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp Jr.). Inspired by his activist mother (Danai Gurira) and close high-school friend Jada Pinkett (Kat Graham), Tupac embarks on a prolific and turbulent career marked by hit records, film roles, violence, imprisonment, bitter rivalries and a complex relationship with music mogul Suge Knight (Dominic Santana). Packed with Shakur’s incendiary music, All Eyez on Me tells the untold story of a prodigiously gifted artist cut down in the prime of life. Long Synopsis Raised in the Bronx by his outspoken mother Afeni (Danai Gurira), a member of the Black Panther Party, Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp Jr.) confronts police brutality at an early age when FBI agents raid his home on Christmas Eve in search of his activist stepfather. Moving to Maryland in his teens, Tupac attends Baltimore School for the Performing Arts, where he befriends a young Jada Pinkett (Kat Graham). But just as Shakur begins thriving in this creative environment, his now- drug-addicted mother ships him off to live with relatives in Oakland, California. Discovered at a Bay Area poetry workshop, Tupac joins Digital Underground and tours with outlandish leader Shock G (Chris Clarke) during the group’s “Humpty Dance” heyday. Tupac soon lands a solo deal with Interscope Records and his first movie role, in Juice. Despite the breakout success of his second album “Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z...,” Tupac’s personal life becomes entangled in a string of arrests, financial problems, and gunfights.
